HCB's Journal, 11 Jul 12

Sometimes I read how people struggle to "log everything I have eaten" - but that implies they are trying to log AFTER eating bad stuff - is that right?

I use the food diary as my meal planner. EVERYTHING is logged before I eat it - this ensures I get all my nutrients and stay within my limits for calories, protein, carbs, fats and sodium.

Doesn't everyone do this? I thought that was what the food diary was for - to plan out your intake - wow, maybe I am just weird.

It ain't rocket science...no offense to any rocket scientists out there!

I try to log most of it, then make adjustments/additions as needed. it's good for me to see a running tally of where I'm at. i'm crappy at staying under my RDI anyway. Probably why I never reach my goal weight! meh, there's more important things than being a certain number on the scale.

I typically log while preparing or eating, honestly. I originally tried to log everything beforehand, but I found myself having to delete/redo the log because of time restrictions, something came up, I didn't have an ingredient I thought I had, etc. Now, I log during breakfast, during lunch, and as I am preparing dinner, with snacks getting logged in as they are prepared as well.

I always log my foods after I have eaten or while eating. I have never used the food diary as a planning tool, but one to record what I eat. Guess I am one of those who isn't smart enough to be a rocket scientist!

I do both before and after depending on when I can get to a computer. I love the idea of a sarcasm font!

I used to log my food. I did. But that was when I could scan the code off a box of what I was eating. Now I cook all my own food so I KNOW what's in it but to keep track of it is like going back to WW points...a serious pain in the ass. Say I have 2 Tbs of flour, half an onion, 1 Tbs Worsestishire sauce, etc...once I start trying to record all of it, then break it down into servings... .25 of 2 Tbs of flour, .25 of 1/2 onion, etc...I don't have the time OR the patience. I tried to use the recipe function once, then I could have it all added up and choose my serving size. Easy right? Well, I can't follow a recipe without messing with it to suite what I want at the time or the ingredients I have on hand. So chili for example, will be different every time. I'm sure counting calories would help, but when I've listed what I ate recently, it's below any number that any formula gives me considering my workouts. (And no offense taken)

I use mine to plan also 95% of the time. I change it a million times a day some days but at least it helps me stay on track. It makes me think twice before eating this or that (MOST of the time). It's not an exact and I keep in my head that there are probably about 100 cals that I take in that are not accounted for. Starting to think I am at a weight that this alone just won't do it though. I just can't get enough excercise in. Yes I can get up at 4:30am (which will effect my sleep which hurts weight loss), yes I can neglect my family and kids but I just can't do it. I ranted about that in my journal so I won't hyjack yours lol! But yes I plan more that do it after too!

I used to use the food diary after I ate, I would not really have a clue as to how much or what I was eating, but I would faithfully log it, and most of the time I was under the RDI, but sometimes over. Now I log everything as soon as I know I want to eat it, and it's very helpful. I don't know why I didn't do it this way before.

I log after each meal so I know how much I have left for the rest of the day. I sometimes log before-hand (esp. dinner) if I think it might be over what I should be eating but like Sookers, I get tired of redoing things when plans change.

I log after I eat. For me, that seems to work better. Lets me decide if I how hungry I am at any particular meal, or what I want to eat at the time. I hate lists, and I guess I am not fond of planning either. Seldom am I surprised by the end numbers though. I have been working at this long enough now.
