CatHerder's Journal, 12 Jan 16

Happy Tuesday everybody!

I've been reflecting recently on my past weight loss attempts and why they failed. I know I have myself to blame for the failures as no one is force feeding me. Having said that, not having a support system of at least one person makes the journey a lot harder for me. In the past I think the people around me in my life were jealous. This was particularly true of my first wife. She did not support my exercise and attempts at weight loss at all. As I reflect back I can see how toxic this can be to someone trying to lose weight. My current wife is very supportive. She did not agree with my diet when I went LCHF but she still supported me. This made a world of difference. I think having that support system is critical as is staying away from the toxic people that are trying to sabotage you.

This time around I'm also applying a more scientific/analytical approach. I know I have to log all of my food. I'm an over-eater plain and simple. I'm not really into sugar by itself, I can over-eat high fat foods just as easily as high carb foods. Fortunately with today's applications it makes it easy to log food. This is a critical component to not regaining the weight.

I have also bought a new expensive toy to help me better zero in on my resting metabolic rate. It's called a breezing metabolic tracker. It's a small hand-held device that uses indirect calorimetry to determine RMR. I have compared my first reading to the equation based calculations and my RMR is about 100 cal/day lower. I'm assuming that's the effect of the calorie restriction I'm on. I plan to track once a week for the next few weeks and then drop to once a month. I'll use this to better fine tune my calorie intake.

I have also talked to my wife about getting genetic testing for fitness. This is supposed to help determine which type of exercise is most appropriate based on your genes. They also have an option to determine what type of diet is most appropriate. What can I say, I'm a science nerd.

Basically, it all comes down to what I choose to put into my body. That's a personal choice that everyone needs to make. I don't advocate any specific diet to anyone. I'm currently into flexible dieting (IIFYM) but have tried Atkins and LCHF (keto). As they say, the best diet is the one you can stick with in the long term. It is all about calorie restriction.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

CH -- Great post and I still marvel and how you continue to tweak, refine and 'improve' your journey to health and fitness. Also, I think we're related re: being equal-opportunity overeaters (sugar, carbs, etc.). The genetic testing intrigues me because I do believe our 'ancestry' plays a role in how our bodies process and metabolize food . . . i.e., we they hunters, gatherers, fishermen? Keep us posted on that.

You are so right about support. It applies to pretty much everything in life. My hubby is supportive of me losing weight, thankfully. But the support on FS is what has encouraged me the most. Week done you for sticking with it this time. Maybe on your journey, the science is the interesting scenery? Lol! I sent off for body fat callipers BTW. Can't weight till they arrive and I can get some measurements!

I'm like you, I have to log everything I eat and in my case after all this time there is still a temptation to not be honest with myself. I'm also fortunate that my wife has been supportive and has joined me in weight loss/fitness journey. Your new device sound interesting, I'd be interested in hearing further how you use the numbers it gives to determine your calorie intake.

Support, in all of life's journeys is so very important. It validates us and gives us the feeling that we and our struggles and/or successes matter to someone other than ourselves. I also weigh, measure, and log every bite. To help keep healthy food choices in the house I try to just shop the perimeter of the grocery store, because that is where I can find the "real" food departments, produce, meat, and dairy.

Yes, your new device is interesting. I just got some basic fat calipers to see where I am in comparison to the reading by my trainers. Should be fun!

I have looked at the Breezing model not too long ago, quite nice. When using it to calculate your calories, are you taking into account thermal loos of calories from foods eaten?...that could be a 100 - 200 calorie difference, depending on what is eaten.

Hi Mahjohn. Right now I'm collecting baseline data. That's RMR, body composition and strength. I'm planning on staying on my current course for at least 3 weeks to see if there is any trending. After that period I'll re-asses. I'll probably account for the TEF indirectly with calorie changes based on the changes I see. I think it would be a real pain to try to factor those in as I log the calories. Maybe I should create my own tracking program that would take that into account?

That's very interesting please keep us advised on how it's going.

Hi! I agree with support systems...In fact, on fitness pal today...they stated that "A community of consistency" is the #1 helpful tool in weight loss. This is what I get from Fat Secret! Have a great day!
