LadyinDenim's Journal, 12 Jun 23

I would pay a flat fee for a feature where food pics are filtered NSFW and we had an option to see them or blur them. What is the point of posting pics of cheesecake, ice cream, and cookies on a feed where people support one another's weight loss efforts? I feel like they're saying, "I can enjoy this food which you are beating yourself for eating."

Because FatSecret doesn't have that, it would be most considerate to post dessert porn on Pinterest or Instagram. I am only posting here because Reddit is blacking out for a couple of days. They have a NSFW option for food photos and it's lovely. I will suggest it to Fatsecret.

I agree with you, @Lady. There is a time and a place for everything, and food porn on a diet/wellness site like FS triggers people trying hard to fight sugar addictions. A filter would be great -- I would use it! Some people who feel compelled to post desserts, junk food, or portion sizes to feed 3 are showing off, others are doing it to get positive feedback for their WOE deviation. I don't find the posts helpful, so I scroll on by.

We are not all on the same diet. I wish I could eat ice cream, cake, cookies, pie, bread, pasta, but they trigger me and are not good for someone with my medical problems. If you are healthy and just want to lose weight then there are tons of ways to do it. Some ways are not necessarily healthy but weight loss usually is. I love to look at food even if I can't have it but I know it can be very hard for others.

Having had a sugar addiction most of my life I now have control over it. I scroll by things I don't want to see but other times I love seeing that people who are enjoying a treat but in moderation. For example I just saw someone take a cheesecake and they split it into many small portions for the week. Brilliant idea rather than eating a huge portion at once which is what I would have done before. I also see lot of pictures of pizza and pastas but I know for me that I have to pretty much stick to a protein and vegetable/fruit diet 90% of the time. No matter what the struggle is real.

I try to follow the “just scroll by” approach but some days (and posts) it’s not easy. I think I’d use that filter on occasion. Kinda like going to the grocery store and trying to avoid all the tempting junk and empty calories.

I just scroll by because most of the food looks gross to me. Weird combinations and such. Congrats on your weight loss!

FS has a few drawbacks in it's approach, I agree wholeheartedly. I do my best to scroll by, but lately, it's almost every single post that has some sort of dessert in it. Another feature I've asked for, is their "show activity from following" feature. It really shouldn't consist of my "support" of people's journals or entries. It really should only consist of journal entries from those I follow. But as it is, if someone "supports" every single post/journal, then I see them. What's the point of filtering then? I could just view Everyone. But I digress. We all have our food issues, and filtering needs to be improved for sure.

Just scroll past. This is a site that some use as a journal so it's up to them to post what they want.

Im going to put my two cents in. If you dont like the pix just scroll past. It’s no different than watching tv and seeing ads for all kinds of junk food or triggering food. I have issues with sugar laden foods but that doesn’t mean my journey, wherever it ends up, is dictated by someone else’s posts. I feel for you because i can see you are clearly clearly triggered and weight is such a personal experience that the whole world has an opinion on whether stated or kept private. Remember that this is your journey. Don’t like the pictures or topic just move on by it only takes a second. Don’t get derailed by someone else’s journey. I still have the very bad habit of checking out Crumbl cookies new menu every Monday. Haven’t had one bite of any desert type food in a year but i enjoy imagining. Probably shouldn’t but there it is. Be well, eat well and dont let others journeys dictate yours.

Being a Fitness Coach and Educator my advise to all is don’t eliminate anything you like to ear. Life is too short to suffer. Just remember this easy formula: Train hard, eat your body weight in grams of good protein, reduce sugar, reduce alcohol , recover. And don’t forget to hydrate.

https://www.medindia.net/news/healthinfocus/good-food-images-make-you-eat-more-158355-1.htm Thank you for your comments and insights. Science says gherlin is increased after viewing images of food and I would still happily pay cash for a NSFW filter. I don't want to come to a weight loss forum for support and walk away hungry LOL. Meanwhile, I do know how to scroll and ignore.

Ladyindenim I agree there should be better filtering on this app. I find that the FS Facebook platform is more in line with my personal beliefs and goals for a healthy balanced diet.. The posts are not by members and there is more moderating and input by the FS administrators on the content. That is where I find the best information. If you haven't been there give it a try. All the best on your journey!

I try to just scroll on by the pictures of foods I shouldn't eat, but do crave. The pictures can make the cravings really bad. But everyone here have different thoughts and WOEs so I just ignore what I can

You can also filter by "Me" and only see your interactions with other journals. There are people on FS who are trying to gain weight as well. It would be awfully hard to please everyone or sort out Keto, Vegan, Pescatarian, Paleo, etc. We all have to play together. I have posted wine memes and perhaps someone with an alcohol problem would rather I didn't. We are ALL so different. Good luck to you in your journey! 😊

I understand wanting to turn filters on because of tempting food. It's one of the reasons I don't watch commercials at night. My husband and son can eat whatever they want without gaining an oz. I, on the other hand, gained weight, eating only a fraction of what they do. I used to ask them to keep it away from me at work or school, or at least hide it from me. I've since learned how to change the way I look at food. I shop when I'm not hungry and buy wholesome food for all of us, the treats only they enjoy, and plan my meals from nutritious food I enjoy. I learned from Noom that looking at food and then turning away from it can actually change our thought patterns so that it becomes less stimulating. I don't suggest doing this when you're hungry, but when you are not and your will is strong. I also avoid the kitchen 2 hours before my bedtime when my will is weak. Turn off the lights and go to bed if I must to put to rest any craving. I am also a nurse that became 100 Lbs overweight after becoming a mother. For years, I put myself last, focused on everyone else's needs, and used food to meet mine. My wake up call was when I couldn't fit on the kiddie ride my son wanted me to ride with him on. I decided I have to take care of myself so that I can live for them. You can change your relationship with food by changing how you look at it. Ask yourself why you want it, is it because you are really hungry in need for fuel, or do you want it for comfort. If you want comfort, then all yourself why and address it. I had to learn to take my aggression out with exercise when I'm frustrated or angry. To talk to someone or pray when I'm sad or need to reflect my thoughts. To find something else to do when I'm bored with cravings. When I'm truly hungry, I eat what is on my plan. On the occasion I'm off offered a treat, and not hungry I'll say no thank you, if I really want it, I'll take a bite size so I can enjoy it without over eating or feeling guilty. Someday, you too can scroll past the treats people post without wanting it, even wondering why they do.

It would be much easier for the software engineers to block / not download all photos than to just block or blurr food pics @Lafyindenim . They might also be able to block "Food Diary“ photos and let Journal photos through which might not achieve what you want. While recognizing a photo as food is technically possible, FS is not staffed for complex features. Anyway, best of luck on your journey.

FS is not really interested in improving their program. Many of us have contacted them regarding possible improvements— like in the cookbook— but really no response on their past.

And some people post pics of food that is totally disgusting

It doesn’t bother me at all. Just quickly scroll past it

Cheesecake mealprep photo user here - Hi! :) I used to have a very unhealthy addiction to the foods i post - like you probably do now, which is why you're triggered. In fact, i think my addiction will always be there- it's just under control now. I think it's important to learn that dieting is only successful if you eat what you love in moderation and learn that calories in, calories out is how weight loss happens. (CICO) If you want to avoid a huge diet crash, eat what you love and learn to have a respectful/controlled relationship with the "unhealthy" food. We post because its important to know that these foods aren't off limits if you're dieting.

I use this site to try and help me to lose weight. LadyDenim brings up an extremely valid and important point imo. I think it's NOT too much to ask: if there's foods that are usually catagorized as 'unhealthy' (burgers, cheesecake, the likes) then please do it on other social media sites. Focus this entirely on eating healthy! Not everyone is doing 'keto' or 'fasting' or XYZ. It's about coming to the playground and respecting that everyone is different. That the primary goal here is to 'log foods share and support'. Are we being supportive by posting photos of foods that are *really* not healthy in general? (I'm sorry but cheesecake is NOT a 'health food' trying to sugar coat it with 'former things' isn't enough to allow that) That to me is presumptuous and disrespectful. It's harmful especially to those who are struggling *horribly* I have the support of several people, I eat extremely well but they cannot figure out why I'm climbing UP in weight vs not coming down. I eat about 1200-1500 calories a day, I exercise (alternating what I do) daily! I hydrate OH my god do I drink water and balance in and through out. NO sodas. NO Fried foods and NO sauces whatsoever! But I still gain weight! :/ Food porn does not help. Fresh fruits! Veg, things encouraging GOOD *Healthy* eating. SAMPLES of *healthy meals* (low fat, low calorie ideas for those who need it) Show us you know how to do THOSE and not continue on with 'fatty foods' (made light... who can stop after that portion ?? it's then not a healthy food....... it's a danger trigger food!) I understand the need to want to share. I really do, but I hope that people do it on IG or Pinterest. Not here. I am so glad you said something LadyDenim!! I will write in too!
