Fritzy 22's Journal, 17 Oct 22

Yesterday I finished cleaning out the plastic pond dug into the bank on the side of my house. I can see it from my window. I had used the leaf blower the day before to get all the stuff I hadn't been able to reach. So I wiped it all clean and then filled it with water. Later I saw a few birds checking it out. I had gone a year without having water in it and the wildlife was so used to coming to get a drink there. Everybody - the crows, blue jays, squirrels, wild turkeys, deer and I've even seen a fox or two getting a drink. I was up well over 11,000 steps yesterday. Today won't be much. Won't go for a walk unless I get out by myself. I don't like walking with Bobby on garbage day. The big trucks scare us both. I am loving the nice cool mornings. Hopefully, in 2 or 3 weeks it will no longer feel like summer.

Not sure what I'll eat today. Probably salad - it was pretty good yesterday and I bought 2 bags of it.

Your pond sounds lovely. I am sure the wildlife appreciate it. 😊

Thanks Shir - It's hard to keep clean but the wildlife love having a place to get water. I checked into getting electricity up to the bank so I could put a pump in the pond and keep mosquitos away. But it was 2 expensive. I put in solar pumps and I'm not sure who it is, but some wild thing (probably a squirrel) turns the pump over and chews on the bottom of it.

I have heard mosquito fish keep the insects at bay, but then you might get some critters going after the fish. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So nice of you to get the pond going for all the critters!:) You are really getting those steps in!👍

We have a couple of bird baths, a dog food bowl, and a small pool for the wildlife here. Plus all the feeders. Good job on the steps!

Thanks becca - A few years ago I looked into mosquito fish but never found out where to get them. I found something at the hardware store - like a pellet, to put in the pond and the water is still safe for the wildlife. Raccoons may go after fish, not sure. But every year around February or so I get tadpoles in the pond and then there are lots of frogs in spring and summer. I don't want to empty the pond and clean it until the frogs have left. Thanks Navywife - I'm being a slug today. Not doing much of anything and want to see what kind of steps I will get in. This is not untypical for me. But the last few days have shown me how little effort it takes to get the steps in. So hopefully, no more days of being a slug. Or maybe just once a week or once a month. Thanks Morticia. I have one bird bath on the front porch. The goldfinch are always there. It's up about 8 steps at the top of the porch. I put the yard waste container in the area below otherwise my neighbor's cat spends the day catching birds. I leave a bucket of water out and often seeing turkeys going to it and I have a swallow old litter box full of water on the deck - easier for the squirrels.

Fritzy, I love how you take care of the wildlife.

Thanks Shir - it started out as just feeding the birds. Then the squirrels started coming, so I bought peanuts to keep the squirrels away from the bird food. That didn't work - the squirrels eat everything. Lots of my neighbors leave water out for the deer.
