shirfleur 1's Journal, 21 May 22

My youngest grandson leaves for Marine basic training today, and I am torn. I'm happy for him, because this is something he's been working towards for a long time, but I'm concerned because he may one day be in harm's way. His dad was in the air force for nine years, and is a veteran of Desert Storm, but he was never on the front lines, which, of course, is where a marine is most likely to be.

I've been faithfully logging my food lately, although I've had to do quite a bit of estimating. Dinner tonight will be at one of my favorite French restaurants, then off to the symphony. This should be the last of my dining out for a little while, so perhaps I will be able to do a bit better next week.

Have a good weekend my friends.

Been there, done that. If you know what job he signed up to do, I can tell you what he'll be doing and risk level. Once he marches on that parade deck for the final time and graduates basic, he will be ready to do anything - so proud and so brainwashed lol. It's the best training on the world - literally. Even if he does get shipped out, so much is long range strikes that there isn't as much danger as before. And we're trained more to survive... not just kill lol.

Shir, if he's stationed at Camp Pendleton, your son will have the time of his life. I've been on that base a few times, and they do some of their exercises right on the beach in the gorgeous weather. He'll learn to surf, meet cute beach babes, and make a ton of friends. A lot of Marines & Seals stay in the area after they've come back from tours because they fall in love with the beach life.

LB, we had a great time. Dinner was lobster bisque followed by scallops with asparagus risotto (I know, Italian, not French) and house-smoked salmon with quail eggs and caviar. We shared a dessert of upside-down Apple tart with vanilla bean ice cream. The symphony performed Beethoven's Ode to Joy. My friend had bought a number of tickets and had an extra, which he gave to me. The problem was that there were many stairs to get to our seats and I use a walker, so there was no way I was going to get up there. But the theater staff was very helpful and found me a seat in the handicap section, which turned out to be on about the twelfth row, dead center, so I may have had the best seat in the house.

Shirfleur, A night to be savored! Oh my, how wonderful! (great seat! no one talks during symphony anyway) Thank you, I have Beethoven's Ode to Joy found on YouTube playing now. :-)
