Fritzy 22's Journal, 11 Apr 22

Day 4 of trying to eliminate processed foods. I'm rethinking this. I tried it about 3 years ago and lost about 20 pounds in 2 months and eventually nearly 50 pounds that I have since gained back. I remember, at the time a friend told me I need to this gradually. I jumped in and tried to change my eating habits totally. So I failed after a few months. I remember at the time giving my nieces boxed and canned food from my pantry that I figured I wouldn't eat again. I talked to one of my doctors who was vegan (I think all of my doctors are vegan!). She said it was a gradual process for her - first she gave up red meat, etc. I need to figure out a way to do this for eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods. The reason I am feeling this way is I know I am setting myself up to fail if I proceed the way I've been doing this. Also, I am not feeling well today. I think it is the massive (compared to what I usually eat) quantities of vegetables and fruit the last 3 days. My stomach and intestines are against this change right now! I have been buying food for the pantry and freezer for a couple of months. I usually go to the grocery store once a week or 10 days. During Covid - I would wait longer and that met having canned food and food in the freezer. I am not giving it away again. I just need to limit the bread (3 loaves of various types and 4 packages of English muffins in the freezer) and other packaged foods until it's gone and increase my intake of "plants". I loved the blackberries and grapes but NEVER eat that much fruit. Also love brussels sprouts stir fried. I will keep using the electric wok since it is so easy to clean and keep right on the kitchen counter to use daily if desired.

Good luck! I think you do very well with super restrictive diets. I don't know how and I hope it lasts for you.

Thanks DP - I am already realizing after just 3 1/2 days I will fail at my new attempt to eat healthy. I don't think I do really restrictive diets. I just try to stay under 1200 or maybe 1400 calories, and try to do IF - not eating after about 3pm. I had calculated that 1400 calories would be what I would need to maintain my goal weight and figured I'd eventually get there. But I need to work up to eating a plant based diet. Right now I am feeling queasy after 3 days of delicious fruit and cups and cups of vegetables in stir fries.

I could never do a fruit and vegetable diet. Ugh. I would die. It sounds so difficult and terrible. I just remember how well you did with that Daniel Fast or whatever it was. I feel like I am doing the same thing- trying to come up with some new thing to try to get my calories under control. I don't know what my problem is. I even got an ad for weight loss hypnosis on facebook and thought it may be my next thing to try. HAHA.

DP-I forgot about the Daniel Fast! But that had an end date so I was able to stick to it. The thing about vegetables is most are so low in calories so you can eat lots of them. The trick is finding vegetables I like. But I had the best blackberries I've ever had in my life the other day. They were so sweet and juicy and huge. I would probably take them over potato chips, 2 out of 3 times anyway. I actually did go to a weight loss hypnosis meeting once at a hotel with a couple of friends, many years ago. A huge room full of people. I actually was aware that I was hypnotized and it was so relaxing. It worked for awhile. I could walk by anything in the grocery store, like chips or ice cream and it was like they were just brooms or something. But once it was over, it was over. Like a light switch was turned off. You should try it.

I don't see much of an advantage to go completely on one direction. I think the goal is to eat healthy which means making the right choices most of the time but sometimes you eat something else. I think that is a balanced diet LOL

You are right, Liv.

Over time I have seen every type of diet come into vogue, and every kind of food be villianized, only to be retracted as science increased our knowledge base. I decided long ago to eat a smaller amount of a WIDE variety of foods, try to concentrate on fresh foods, making smaller portions of junk food an occasional item, limiting restaurant food (not into restaurants at all) . Something I can do for a lifetime and have been doing the majority of my life. It’s a no brainer for people who are sick of spending 20 years trying to loose the same 20 pounds. There is no magic,

I can see doing a more restrictive diet for a short period of time to kick start weight loss. I myself could not sustain giving up the foods I love long term. I also believe your "diet" should include the foods you plan to eat forever so that you can learn how to eat without gaining the weight back. If you learn to eat higher calorie foods in moderation you can eat anything. Of course if you're giving up a food for health reasons (your body doesn't tolerate it well) that's a bit different.

Yeah Kenna and Sherry... It all makes sense and it's so simple but not easy for some (including myself there). Being able to enjoy a variety of delicious food that God has given us in perfect portions while moving our bodies more is ideal. Remembering how I did it so easily is the chore. Sorry Fritz...I know this is your post. Just chiming in. (Avoiding going into work) lol

I lost most of my weight by eating non processed about 75-80% of the time. That began about 4 years ago. Eventually I got lax about what I ate. I was still able to stay pretty consistent ( I think it's because I work out so much) but I felt bloated and and tired most of time. When I decided to do carb cycling 2xs a week and do mostly non processed, I thought I'd feel great. I felt pretty bad stomach wise for at least first 2 weeks. It took a bit of getting used to. I now feel great and definitely notice a change in my energy and mobility. I contribute it more to the non processed rather than low carb. I notice you talk about vegan..I do eat quite a bit of protein, including meats but try to buy grass fed etc. That helps with my weightlifting. Maybe try to balance better. I eat a variety of foods, which does include lots of veggies but I try to mix it up a bit. I make my own protein bars, using natural ingredients and eat boiled eggs, some fruit, etc. Hope you find your balance.💜💜

My two cents. Don't toss what you have, but do keep it for actual emergencies. I don't eat exclusively whole foods, but I buy more fruits and veggies with bags of frozen proteins and I don't buy much that comes in a box or crinkly bag. I do eat dark chocolate. About 100 calories a day. I take them out in the morning and when they're gone, that's usually it until the next day. Unless it's a really bad day. Then I log it. When we eat out, I make a point to bring at least half home.

Fritzy when it comes to food and drink everyone has an "achilles heel". It isn't easy for anyone to make the best choices for health at every single meal. You are making many positive affirmations about eating healthier and walking more so focus on your own goals. When it comes to processed food pick your battles it doesn't have to be all or none. Decide what categories you want to prioritize and start with those first.

Thanks Liv and DP. I will keep trying! Thanks DJinVegas - my biggest weakness is soda and chips. I've given them up numerous times and am trying again. What I am trying to ask myself every time I eat something is "what is the nutritional value is in this?" and try not to have it. Although I can come up with excuses to eat almost anything. Thanks Kenna - I agree with EVERYTHING you wrote. Although I do like going to restaurants with friends once in awhile, it's more a social thing. I am about to go to the grocery store and bok choy is on my list. There are many, many foods I haven't tried. I was one of those kids who wouldn't even try some foods. DP - jump in whenever you want! Your comments in on point - for me it is about what I choose to eat and how I make that decision. Thanks Diana - how you lost weight has worked for me in the past. I am really going to try to eat more "plants". I don't think I will ever go vegan. Although I usually only have meat 2 or 3 times a week I have fat free milk and eggs for protein. I don't go to a gym and my main exercise is walking in my neighborhood which is difficult for me because it isn't flat, it is very hilly so I get out of breath fast. Thanks Katsolo - I will try to use up what I have before the expiration date, but only eat the processed food to add to the fruits and vegetables and other plants like nuts and beans and rice.

Thanks Crazycat - I can guess what the google search will show and they are probably my most favorite foods if I didn't have to worry about my health.

Google is pretty unreliable. Unhealthy is not any clearer than healthy... there are different perspectives. We just have to decide our own individual paths
12 Apr 22 by member: liv001
Thanks Liv. I did check google. There were several different entries. Some not surprising - hot dogs and other processed meats, potato chips, sweetened beverages (I love Coke and Pepsi), packaged baked goods, white bread.

Major across the board changes seem destined to cause unpleasant issues with the body. They also tend to be unsustainable in the long run. I believe changes in eating are like other lifestyle changes. It's better to gradually change one thing at a time. You have identified chips and soda as difficulties, pick one and choose a replacement. I drank way too much soda for years. Now I only have it when I eat at a restaurant. You know your body, be kind to it and yourself. You will find what you need to eat to feel your best.

Thanks Slyone - I do the same thing with soda - I tell myself I can have it when I get a meal out which is usually only a couple times a month, if that. But once in awhile I still get a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi or Coke. It's been at least a month though. Chips is a big weakness. I have tried to give them up so many times. Once, about 30 years ago it was a New Year's resolution not to eat chips and I made it until November. Right now I am focusing so much on what I am going to eat and buying and cooking healthy that I am not craving anything bad. Hope that lasts.

If you are going to buy soda don’t buy 2-liter. You have already set yourself up to go off the rail. Buy a six pack of 8 ounce cans instead. Don’t say it costs more to do that. It doesn’t matter. It gives you a moment to drink and enjoy that first can and gives you an opportunity to check yourself before you physically pop the second or third.. anything you can do to help yourself pause and think about your choice.
