Fritzy 22's Journal, 05 Apr 22

I received the electric wok I ordered on Amazon. I am posting a picture of my stove. I posted it when it was first installed a couple years ago because I was so excited about it. But now I find I don't use the stove much because I hate cleaning it. I have to remove all the very heavy grates to clean the surface. The only way I've figured out to clean the grates is in the dishwasher. They are so heavy they have scratched the stainless steel surface of the stove. It's not bad if I only clean it once a week or so. I'm hoping to stick to the WOE my doctor suggested for my chronic inflammation as measured by blood tests (CRP) and to lose weight. Basically avoid processed foods and meats. I did this a few years ago but couldn't stick to it for than 2 months. I stir fried chicken and vegetables almost every day. Loved it, but got tired of it. I'm looking online for recipes for the wok. I have a wok for the stove, but don't use it much because of the mess I make when cooking.

I hope you can stick to avoiding the processed foods - maybe figure out what spices are in them and try to recreate the taste? Great stove but I understand about the cleaning. I have a smooth top electric so don't have that problem

I just suck it up and clean the stove. The price I pay for eating.

Thanks Abba - I'm hoping the wok will make it easier for me to do some cooking. I've been looking up recipes for different sauces for stir frying. May not be able to go totally unprocessed depending on what I put in the sauces. Diana - my food is never pretty so I rarely post pictures But we'll see. Kenna - luckily I'm not crazy about cooking so I have an excuse to not use the stove so much. I use the microwave and toaster oven more than the stove. Mountainman - I used to do aluminum foil on an electric stove, but on the propane stove there really isn't a place to put it.

I understand about the heavy grates! I have fibromyalgia & even lifting a iron pan was too much. I got rid of it. What is WOE & do you have CRPS pain disorder?

I love to cook but clean up not so much! I looked fondly at the gas ranges when we were replacing appliances 2 years ago. Really prefer to cook with gas. Then I decided on the smooth top electric. Too bad the gas ones don't come with someone to clean up!

I'd love to have your stove! I'm stuck with electric. I do a lot of stir fry at home too. I'm currently on a big orange/apricot chicken kick. I just use my cast iron Dutch Oven because it gets crazy hot. I need to consider getting a wok I can use outside 🤔

HazelHanford - I don't have CRPS pain disorder. I copied this online: " C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein made by the liver. CRP levels in the blood increase when there is a condition causing inflammation somewhere in the body. A CRP test measures the amount of CRP in the blood to detect inflammation due to acute conditions or to monitor the severity of disease in chronic conditions." My CRP levels have been really high, 2 to 3 times what the "high" level is. Don't know what causes it, but my doctor said if I eat an anti inflammatory diet and lose weight, walking or exercising a minimum of 4 to5 times a week the CRP levels should go down. The WOE my doctor said is to reduce or eliminate processed foods and meats. I try to stay around 1200 calories. He basically said a plant based diet. But I still have dairy products, eggs and sometimes chicken, and fish for protein. Slyone - I do love cooking with gas and my old stove was propane so I just basically had one installed that was the same size and fit on the kitchen island. It has a downdraft. I had only 1 or 2 stoves to choose from. If I was a good cook I would love the stove. I had a white gas stove in my previous house, built in 1998 and it didn't have the heavy grates and was easy to clean. I sold the house after living there about 13 years and the stove was clean and looked as good as new. The stove I have now has scratches from the grates moving around when lifted off or just when the stove is being cleaned.

Put the grates in a sink of hot water with a few dish pods. Let sit 30 mins. The dish pods dissolve and loosen all the dirt. Then a gentle scrub and rinse and they are clean!

If it is a self clean oven, just put the grates in the oven and hit the self clean button

Fritzy, thanks so much for explaining all that to me! I have seen that test on blood work panels but didn't connect it bc my husband has CRPS pain disorder. I can imagine his CRP levels are in the gazillion range, & mine are probably like yours in a high range. So, I'm going to try cooking more plant based stuff, too, & like you we'll still eat eggs & chix. I have to get him to stop eating deli meats tho. Thanks so much! 😊

2melons - orange/apricot chicken sounds really good! I'm a lousy cook, but I've been looking up recipes for stir fries so I don't get bored.

Seashell - The grates are way too big for the sink unless I have half of one sticking out and clean them 1/2 at a time. And they are so heavy I'm afraid they will chip the sink. Kenna - that's a great idea! I will try that. I remember my mom doing that with the broiler pan that was in the oven all the time. Hazel - if you have copies of your blood work you should check the CRP levels. I don't think they run them all the time. My doctor only did it because there is a history of heart disease in my family. But even if that's not the case, I don't think a plant based diet will hurt. I'm using up some stuff in the house and hope to goo 100% for at least as month, starting Saturday. I know eventually I'll add back small amounts of some processed foods, even if it's just croutons in a salad. Good luck to you!

Fritzy — just check your owners manual first but I have been doing this as long as self cleaning ovens have been around and have never had an issue.

I was also going to suggest looking at the manual. If you leave the racks in the oven when it is cleaning they will get all tarnished because the finish is not meant for such high heat for that length of time. I wouldn't risk ruining the oven racks and burner grills. Maybe just use a plastic tote and let them soak and scrub outside. Less messy than cleaning in the kitchen sink. Hope you figure it out !

Thanks Kenna and crazycat - I think I'll keep washing them in the dishwasher. Only one really needs to be cleaned frequently.
