Hill hiking today felt good .it’s the only way I can get my heart rate up. Spring has sprung for sure. Two rattlesnakes right on the trail today and one mountain lion cooling himself in the shade at the bottom of a gully way in the distance. . Very unusual, i didn’t see either one of the snakes, I was warned by several different groups of “snake on the trail” but it turned out to be two separate ones. Both rattlers. The one is a golden color, very thick and about 3 feet long. The other was the usual brownish, about four ft.. they were both gone by the time I got to their site— fortunately.

OK, rattlesnakes have ROW on the trail. BTW, I was fishing on the bank of the Columbia River in my youth and sat on a large boulder when I heard the rattle right under me. I have never jumped so high.

Les Girth— I guess I would jump to. As close as I have come was taking a jump over a log and the snake was coiled right under me. It didn’t even move. Heart was beating so fast. The ones that make me nervous are the babies, they don’t have mature rattles and they cannot selectively envenomate. Almost all baby rattler bites are envenomated unlike adults—- they can strike but not inject.. if your extremity is not 4 times it’s normal size in about five minutes it is your lucky day.. I have seen my share.

Lots of snakes in SoCal -- even on the cliffs at the beach. If you sit quietly for 10 minutes or so, one will usually cross the path next to you. Some like to just sun themselves on the flat rocks. I follow the "I won't bother you, you won't bother me" philosophy and just share the great outdoors. 🙂 Great choice of hiking path!

This area is huge and has hundreds of trails. I mostly do this hike alone because most of my same aged peoples can no longer do this sort of thing. There are usually enough people on the trail that you are not really alone, but I do have to pick and chose my trails carefully. The adult snakes don’t concern me as much as the babies. They are aggressive and haven’t yet bought in to the you do you and I’ll do me philosophy.

Be wary of snake babies. I used to hike in AZ. when I lived out there. I used to take my Rottweiler, Chow/German Shepherd/Wolf mix dogs w/ me and I always carried a BIG, walking-stick. Mountain Lions are cool too, but still...be very careful. You may need to carry a shot-gun. I had one back at home. I used to hike w/4 nephews & nieces, of my ex's, that I was helping him raise too. We were always safe....thanks be to God...Amen O:-)

Never mind the snakes, do you ever see any big cats out there on your hikes? I see you like your inclines! I have to say I do too. But only on my treadmill because I don’t have that real life Sandune the climb!

It’s very beautiful and I’m glad that you enjoyed your hike and got your heart rate up...and I’m also glad that you did not come in close contact with any snakes or mountain lions! Have a great week! 😉

My biggest fear is running into snakes and bears. Thank goodness no lions in NY. How did you get around the snakes?

mountain lions are very aggressive i had one stalk me at night once on a creek bank i was in a boat but it paced me on the bank

p$s— by the time I got to where the places where each of the snakes had been reported, they were gone. It is so typical that they lay either on one edge of the road close to the vegetation or right in the middle of the trail. They have about a 5 ft. Striking range so it is an issue sometimes.. they feel the ground vibration of multiple people walking and will take off for safer ground, but one person, not so much..

Jograssetti— this is Southern California in the hills above the 91 freeway in the Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda area. We are surrounded by mountains and hills that keep me physically challenged.

Kay Buckeroo— I have been hiking so long that I can’t walk far enough or fast enough to really raise my heart rate, that is why I miss my swimming so much. Hill hiking gives that extra boost. No shortage of opportunity in California.

LaMichigan— it was 90 yesterday. Temps have been doing a roller coaster for us as it has many places. It just means I have to head out to hike about 8-8:30 to avoid the heat and the snakes.
