BuffyBear's Journal, 01 Mar 13

It is March 1st and Friday - what a great combination!

Did anyone else read that FDA may allow artificial sweeteners in milk (and milk products) and it won't have to be on the label? What good is a label if the ingredient don't have to be listed? I sure hope someone nips that in the bud.

Hope everyone is having a good day!

Morning Buffy! I looked it up, read an article, I think they will have to put it on the label, I think it is wrong to add aspartame. I think what it is, the word "MILK" is regulated, so, they want to call a artifically sweetened so called milk and still have it labeled as MILK, sort of like the Cranberry drink vs cranberry JUICE... IDN, I think it stupid, but hey , what ever sells these days! According to the article I read "Currently, the government agency only allows for the use of the word "milk" to describe beverages with calories, which means that they need to be sweetened with sugar and high-fructose corn syrup." I never realized I have never see a gallon of sugar free chocolate milk... Hmmm, I would probably drink the whole dang thing and float away,, Moooooo. maybe some of the dairy peeps in our buddy list will chime in!

Why on earth do we need sweetener in our milk ?? are they saying they want to sweeten just plain whole white milk ? What's next..flavored eggs in the shell ! Hey don't laugh..nothing is impossible these days. Makes you really think about what we eat and may not even know it.

Unbelieveable! Just when there's all this hoopla over sugared soft drinks - and bans on the big sizes in NY - and all the talk about childhood obesity, we need to create an artificially sweetened milk product??? Watch out now.....some consumer will file a lawsuit soon afterward claiming she had no idea sweetened milk beverages weren't "healthy!" (a la Nutella).

No I have not heard that, hope it is not true...why do "they" have to mess with everything...just leave it alone, why can't milk be what it is? All that name confusion is driven by one thing...greed.

Lizzy - I'm upset and I don't even drink milk.

Just wanted to add this to the discussion here--I read that this would happen only with flavored milks such as strawberry milk or chocolate milk, not plain. Their reasoning behind this is being able to offer consumers these flavored products with "lowered sugar" amounts so they don't seem "as unhealthy" as before while still maintaining the sweet flavor and making it seem to cosumers that nothing artificial is being used in those products...

TOFU - They are making it harder and harder to appreciate the taste of real food.

I am appaled at this considering just a week ago I saw tons of articles about how aspartame and artificial sweeteners in soft drinks are linked to a higher risk of diabetes!!!

shadowx, I also saw it was connected to the craving of higher calorie foods. Buffy, I am not a milk drinker either, but am appalled that they are even considering it. I suspect they are attempting to lure kids away from soft drinks that have 0 calories. :(

Amazing stuff all of this. Shadowx, that makes so much sense. I'm not at all surprised. Whole foods everyone. It's our only hope and THEN, we still have to worry about GMO.

Happy March, Buffy Bear. I forgot to journal it, but you know I was thinking it.

Wow Buffy, I had no idea about the milk. I'm going to have to do some reading about it. I agree, why do we have to spend double the money to get real milk (organic). We should be able to trust that our foods are whole. 3 of my grandkidlings experienced early puberty before their time, so I have been buying almost solely organic dairy, produce and meats to try and put us all on a good path of living healthy.
