HCB's Journal, 14 Aug 12

"Butt-kicked" myself to again exercise this morning despite being tired. I did 20 minutes of my Cardio Kickboxing DVD and the 20 minute first level of my Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD.

That is an intense 20 minutes - I easily do the strength training, abdominal work, and the duration of the cardio segments - but, it is hard to do the high impact jumping stuff! SO, I use faster lower impact movements for the cardio segments. I hope to work up to jumping but my knees may not cooperate over the long-term! I am a heck of alot older than Ms. Michaels!

As I said yesterday, she is effective for me - I get my heart rate up and my body shape is changing in the last six weeks!

The scale is sluggish right now. I looked back at my food for the last six days and noticed I have been slipping in some "bad" carbs - for me it could be popcorn, bread, a few taco chips, a pancake, etc. These foods are not inherently "bad" and they fit in my food plan on any given day; BUT, I often feel sluggish, bloated and tired when I eat them!

Obviously, my body is happier on lean proteins, fruits, green type veggies, and some whole grains - with sometimes a sweet potato, or a pure corn totilla thrown in the mix.

It is cool to realize that healthy eating has taken root in my body and mind!

Today I am grateful for:

- My FS Buddies who support and encourage me to continue
- "Butt-kicking" myself to a smaller size today
- My DH - and his quick recovery from his cycling accident last night
- My Bengal cat companions
- My work - which has meaning and worth to other human beings
- My connection to the Mother Earth and all its splendor
- My physical health

I am with you... Sweet potatoes and oatmeal are two of my favorite "good" carbs. I am super-sluggish about working out right now, but let's agree that two weeks from now I will be back to kicking butt!

Good for you on the butt kicking. I love sweet potato too - have also been trying to add back beans (legumes). Wish they sold them in 4 oz cans - LOL.

Your idea to use modifications during Jillian Michaels' "jumping moves" is super smart. I modify the jumping rope moves (and sometimes the butt kicks) with cheerleader like pony trots and arm stretches. I also modify the push-ups. Level II makes me worried about injury. Have you seen Level III? My husband and I completed that level just a couple of times a year or so ago. We were both sore!

LOL W4 - Level 3 probably has burpees!

I love the way you pay attention...to how you feel physically, small changes in your diet, or your attitude...and you make adjustments to ensure your success. It is inspiring.

I've done the 30 day shred. I haven't gotten passed the first level. That is definately a butt kick session. You rock that you can do it.

Love the thankful list! I got to find the gumption to exercise in the morning. The puppy won't be able to guilt me because he will have E...I am gonna try tomorrow. You inspire me! Glad your hubby is feeling better. :-)

Good for you and your butt kick - I think most of us are like that with exercise - but it always feels so good once you have done it!!

Great job on 'getting er done' in spite of being tired. I hear you on the 'bad carbs'. I know I always feel better when I eat healthy green vegetables and whole grain foods. Everything I've read touts sweet potatoes as one of the wonder foods of the age, so much low cal nutrition in one. It's funny; I started dehydrating sweet potatoes as a treat for my dog, and one day I decided to try one myself. Not bad! Now I'm making my own dried apples and sweet potatoes and putting them in a freezer storage bag and in the freezer, so if it's off season, or I just don't have access to fresh fruit, I grab a handful out of the freezer, put it in a sandwich bag and take it with me. Keep charging (and no, not the credit cards)!

Hey that is a great idea to dry apples and sweet potatoes - you are so clever, DK!

You are doing great by adjusting the workout to fit you and getting the most out of it that you can. I think too many people either don't even try to push themselves with a challenging workout video or they give up because they can't do all the moves. Keep at it and, before you know it, you'll be looking for new challenges because this one will be "too easy" for you!

That is fantastic! I have had too many appointments to go to the gym in the past few days. I am so sorry your husband had an accident. You are so dedicated to your Jillian Michaels DVD. Makes me want to hunker down and actually order Brazilian Butt Lift.

I think that I am going to try this 30 Day shred. It's on iTunes, so I can take it anywhere which may come in handy when the wedding comes :) It sounds wonderful and I LOVE her!

This JM thing sounds pretty cool. I wonder if I could handle. Are there a lot of twisting moves? I'm always a little leary of the workout dvds after injuring myself doing some of P90X's twisting moves (I think the banana-superman move was the culprit). Think it's better to do compared to my 10 monite burpee routine? ;)

CJT1217 - You could do JM's titles like: Six Pack Abs, Burn Fat and Boost Metabolism, and 30 Day Shred has three levels of 20 minute circuit training segments that increase in difficulty with burpees and mountain climbers. It is likely you could do all three levels and make it as hard or soft as you want.
