Fritzy 22's Journal, 12 Oct 22

I did good with my eating plan yesterday. Was able to reach my minimum goal of 40 grams of protein with some string cheese and raw almonds. I really don't eat "meals" unless I go out to eat. I do things like have a hard boiled egg at 10am, then some fruit at 11am, string cheese at noon, tomato soup at 4pm to just keep trying to get the protein grams up. Sometimes I'll actually cook something - stir fry some vegetables or bake chicken.

I went grocery shopping yesterday and was thinking I would spend $40 to $50. It was nearly $80. I am trying not to get upset with the prices but it is still hard to see bread for $7 and $5 for a little package of cream cheese and $7-$8 for American cheese for my grilled cheese sandwiches. I bought some grapes and raspberries. Wanted brussels sprouts but they didn't look good, were way too big. So just onions and mushrooms which I'll either stir fry or put in scrambled eggs. I may check the local market for brussels sprouts (my favorite vegetable right now). Since I went to the nearest town with a grocery store because of my eye exam I was really tempted to go to Jimboys for my favorite fast food tacos on taco Tuesday but I managed to resist, remembering the number on the scale in the morning.

I love tacos and could get into a Taco Tuesday rotation fairly easily.

Thanks Navywife and Morticia - I usually give in to the tacos if I am in town on a Tuesday. Jimboys (local in the Sacramento to Lake Tahoe area) tacos are in the FS database so I can work the calories into my daily allowance. They put parmesan cheese on the corn tortillas/taco shells. Just love them. I have been making tacos at home at least once a weeks for 2 or 3 months. I hope I am over that. Maybe once or twice a month at the most. I've always read that we should have no problem at all getting enough protein and even my doctor (a vegan) says humans can get enough protein from the plants we eat. But unless I eat meat it is tough to get up to 40 grams. Milk and eggs really help. I did bake a chicken breast this morning but rarely cook and usually have meat of some kind once or twice a week if that. I appreciate your support!

When fresh brussels don't look great, I buy them frozen. My local Vons sells a 16 oz bag for only $1.99. A head of Cabbage has a lot of protein, too, and you can stir fry it, roast it (just slice it into big disks and brush with olive oil then dust with salt, pepper or a little paprika/cayenne/red pepper).

The tacos sound great! Your doctor says humans can get enough protein from plants. I had a doctor/scientist with Cleveland Clinic tell me that we need meat, we just eat WAY TOO MUCH. I guess all we can do is figure out what works for each of us!:)

How do you cook your Brussels?

I wish cabbage had a lot of protein because I eat it a lot. Sadly only about 1gm in 100 gm.

Thanks Bananas - I don't like brussels sprouts frozen. I tried a few years ago, read how to blanch them. And I didn't like them so I never buy the frozen ones. I also don't like cooked cabbage (I am still like the kid I was, a picky eater but willing to try more things now) but like it raw like in salads and coleslaw. Maybe I'll try roasting it, that doesn't sound bad. Thanks Navywife - I finally stopped questioning my doctor about getting protein from plants. Another doctor (I think all of my doctors are vegan) said she gradually became vegan, first giving up beef and so on but that vegans normally eat lots of beans! I aim for 40 grams at a minimum but really want to get to 60. I did a fast for 20 days (the Daniel Fast starting in January) which was a really strict vegan and I told my doctor I was lucky to reach 30 grams of protein and he basically said I worry too much about protein. I don't have to cut down trees so aiming for 40 grams is enough. Mike, I hated brussels sprouts as a kid, would actually gag trying to swallow them. My mom always boiled them and covered them in cheese sauce which is probably why I don't like them soggy. Several years ago I really wanted to cook them because I read how healthy they are. My hair dresser told me to buy small ones, cut them in half and cook in a frying pan with a little olive oil and some bacon. So I tried it and liked the bacon the best but was willing to try it again. By the 3rd time I didn't need the bacon. I either stir fry them or roast in the oven after spritzing olive oil on them. They need to get a little brown for me. Kenna - I used to make salads for work and I would buy the packs of cabbage or spinach to make them figuring they might be healthier than lettuce. Thanks jaac - My way of eating has evolved over the last year or two. I have some bad habits when by myself. I don't eat at the table, usually eat on the sofa while watching TV or just while walking around the house. Yesterday I made chicken in the morning and ate some of that around 10am. Then 30 minutes later I ate rice I had prepared and frozen. It was supposed to be a side dish for the chicken. I get better in the winter when I cook more - If I make a roast or stew I'll eat at the table.

You are welcome Mike! thanks Sugarplum - I am now shopping at the grocery store with an eye out for special deals. I stopped in today after going to the pharmacy. Just wanted brussels sprouts and ended up spending $49 buying things like coffe, milk and green beans for the dog. I feel good that I didn't give in to ice cream on sale at $3.99 because I knew it would only last about 2 days in my freezer and I didn't want to undo the last 2 days of dieting.
