59Carol's Journal, 03 Jul 21

Weight wise this week has gone well! I have lost a pound. I am now officially 5 pounds under my goal. I have assessed and I plan to lose another 5 pounds.

My bean increase and my nut decrease is standing me in good stead. I am better satiated and the weight loss is more consistent.

This week was busy. I replaced the side window in my car - it broke in the heat last week! We hired our new Executive Director in the non profit I am involved in. I showed my rental property but no taker yet. Had a couple of 7am walks to beat the heat. Did month end books for two small companies. Busy but not particularly exciting!

We offered the job position over lunch. I looked up the nutritional information on Mr Mikes. Yikes!!! I ended up getting a salad with Salmon for 400 calories. It was delicious. Thank goodness I checked the information as I could have ended up with over a 1000 calories without hardly trying.

My garden is growing! Very exciting. It is the first time I have even tried to garden. I am known for my 'black' thumb (is that the thumb of plant death??) so this is new territory for me. I have embraced the square foot gardening premise. So far I have zuccini, acorn squash, tomatoes, peas, green and wax beans, curly lettuce, carrots, basil, swiss chard and garlic. They are just starting so harvesting is a while away!

Great job on your garden, and fantastic results in your weight-loss efforts and activity levels. You're really making things work and putting in the effort to be successful. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Debbie! I am the tortise in the race - but I keep moving toward my goals whether they are weight related or project related. Kind of like getting the kids to vacuum - whatever they manage to pick up is more than when they started even if they are doing an incomplete job!!

The garden sounds wonderful! It's good exercise. I'm amazed you're keeping it alive in heat that would break your car window!

The heat broke your car window? I'm going to have to make sure I keep my car in the garage instead of the driveway.

Liz Andra I have to confess my garden isn't any exercise at all! It is a raised bed and 4ft by 4 ft. I literally stand beside it and water it. The weeds are nearly non-existent. It takes about 5-10 min each morning. I have really been hitting it with copious amounts of water so that is helping with the last heat wave!

Fritzy- The car window glass people told me I should have opened the windows a crack and then the heat wouldn't have broken that window. The garage would work as well. I had never heard of that before but I guess you learn stuff everyday!

Thank you Shrewdness! It has been a long time getting here but steady as she goes. I think what helped me most was the data I collected - weekly losses (gains) by week and by month and year comparisons by month, calories per day and per week and per month. I use it a lot to see what my trends are. It can really kick me out of complacency and forces me to see the forest and not focus on the trees!

Tim - I really hope so. You know how we assume roles in our families? In my family I was noted as the plant killer while my husband and daughter were the plant people. I just let them do it. When my husband died, I gave all the plants to my daughter as I didn't feel up to watching them die. It has been two years and I was gifted a raised garden box. To honour the gift and the person who gave it to me, I decided to attempt gardening. This is a new endeavour for me and it is exciting to see it actually grow! I hope to harvest the salad fixings soon.

Well done on the weight loss, it's great to be 5 lbs under goal! Also, I'm very envious of your garden. My balcony doesn't receive enough sun for me to successfully grow any produce.

Shirfleuer - my garden is in the beating sun - south side. Heat is not an issue. We have a short growing season but very long days to help make up for it. My 170 pound goal was temporary - I honestly didn't know what my goal was and 100 pounds was all I could mentally cope with at the time! Since I haven't been this weight in around 40 years I honestly don't know what my real goal weight is. So 5 pounds at a time and then assess is my plan for now :) It does feel good to explore this new territory though. I was this weight in 2004 for about a minute (less than a week) when my daughter got married. When I hit 150 something I haven't been there since 1978 when I got pregnant with my first child!
