59Carol's Journal, 19 Jun 21

Hmmm this has been quite the week as far as weight stuff goes. I gained 2.4 pounds. That is and of itself isn't a big deal as I have done that before. In the past I could point to a particular day(s) or time(s) where I ate way above plan. This time I cannot. In fact, my eating was steadily and similarly the same all week long but I kept logging slight daily gains. I kept thinking that it would just 'go' the next day as one of those fluctuations that just happen. Instead my weight would inch up another little bit.

In general my calories are on the low side. As an aside - last week I lost 0.8 pounds this week I averaged 65 calories more per day and gained 2.4 pounds. This week and last week were under my bottom end of my calorie window. Strange, eh?

My plan going forward - I think I have too many calories allotted to peanuts. Right now I have 320 calories a day for nuts. That is 27% of my total daily calories. That is silly. So starting today I am going to add more beans to my diet - they are filling and are packed with nutrients. I am not taking out the nuts entirely - I like them on my morning oatmeal and in my evening soup - but not as many. I will try this out for a week and see what happens.

I happen to not believe that all calories are created equal. I believe that nutritionally dense foods are more 'worthwhile' calories than the calories found in nutritionally suspect foods! Nuts are nutritional however there is a lot of fat in them. So I will embrace the high protein bean! I tend to eat a lot of whole grains but not so much in the bean category.

This week has been relatively uneventful. My chairs arrived for my basement and I am thrilled with them. A bit of a gong show getting them here but worth it. Yard work was up to date and then we had some much needed rain. Will need to attend to the yard again in the next couple of days. My truck that I use to haul water is toast. The transmission it needs is special and hard to get and pricy when found. Will be looking for another used truck. Presented an award at the school I retired from in 2016. Adlibbed my speech and was pleased to see that my public speaking skills are completely in tact! All other projects have been moving forward but not completed.

I sometimes gain weight for no apparent reason, just out of the blue. I've come to realize it is temporary and it goes away just as it came. Sorry about the old truck, too bad. Well done on the talk, something I've never been very good with except in small groups. 💜

What kind of soup do you add nuts to?

Nuts always slow down weight loss for me too. It's great that you have identified the problem.

I agree Shirfleur sometimes I just gain weight for no apparent reason however this time it was a slow slide upwards over 6 days. Too much of a trend! I am disappointed about the truck - I'd hoped it would function until (no known date yet) the water coop comes to me. Public speaking has always come easily and naturally to me. As a teacher, it was the one area I didn't have to 'learn' how to do! I haven't been teaching since June 2016 so no longer doing daily speaking - a few speeches here and there but not consistent. So it was nice that it came as easily as always!

Lambie - I find nuts add to all soups. Presently I have been eating a turkey stew and a mushroom-barley-cabbage soup. Peanuts taste nice on both. The trick is to add them and eat right away. I don't like the nuts to become 'water-logged', I prefer them to be crunchy. Some people grind nuts up and sprinkle them on. That is okay on a pureed soup like butternut soup.

Erika- nuts are so darn high in fat that eating them is truly playing with fire calorie wise. That is why I weigh them by the gram. If I do a free for all snack moment, I get carried away. Even measuring them scrupulously got me into trouble! So less is working well for me and using the bean plan is going well too.

your plan sounds strong to me good luck I know I have to get rid of my empty calories

ridemariel- so far the plan has been successful! The beans are filling and nutritious and I am still getting my nut 'fix' but within reason! I truly believe all calories are not created equal. The more that my food is whole and unprocessed the more satisfying it is and the fewer cravings that I get and the greater the success on the scales!
