59Carol's Journal, 15 May 21

I am logging a gain this week. I never like that. I also don't like the trend for this month - week 1 gained 0.2 pounds, week 2 maintained the weight, week 3 gained 1.2 pounds. This is not looking good at all.

What I see is that for the last 11 days I have recorded in my goal chart a '3' for night eating with nuts as the culprit. I quantify my snack eating on a scale of 1-3. When I have had a very small snack I get a '1', med snack a '2' and a '3' is identified as 'lots'. So for 11 nights in a row I am saying I heavily indulged in a night snack and that it was nuts. In the moment as I am reaching for the nuts, I am choosing to not really examine how much or how often I am helping myself. Then in the morning I just call it lots and let it go at that. This is not working for me. I have been trying to think of substitutions - tea, grape tomatoes, carrots... I have employed these substitutions with limited success because I am still eating the nuts. Since I want to keep losing weight, I will have to find a way to deal with it. I did stop the date habit - mostly out of sight out of mind method and by switching to nuts!

In the meantime, life goes on! I sold my last Harley Davidson motorcycle yesterday. So there are no more big ticket items for me to sell. That is good. I have begun a little bit in my yard. I moved about 150 concrete blocks from my cistern to an outbuilding. Yesterday I began the job of emptying my 4ft by 4ft by 2ft garden box so I can move it to get at the damage the woodchucks have done. I am about half done. Hope to finish the rest today or tomorrow depending on the rains.

My granddaughter has been here for the past week working on her schoolwork. Our province has gone to online learning until at least the end of the long weekend. She went home yesterday afternoon to help with yardwork at her home and then she will be back here tonight. Our goal is to have her completely caught up by the end of next weekend in time to go back to face to face learning. We should be able to pull that off.

The only way I can resist nuts is to keep them out of the house. I'm so impressed with your continuing work on your house and yard! 💛

I used to eat nuts as a snack. Now I try to eat them on a measured amount as a topping for salads or yogurt. My go to snack is popcorn. 2 cups of cheddar flavors 100 calories. Even my sweet kettle corn is only 140 calories. I find it filling & taste satisfying, too.

Yeah, once you start on the healthy, yet calorie filled nuts it’s hard to stop.😋😋😋 I am with Sherrye, I have Skinny Pop almost every night. You can have almost 4 cups for 150, never can eat all that, not sure about the sodium though. 😕 Have a Wonderful Sunday Carol!🌸

I agree, nuts and seeds are little fat bombs that can stall weight loss. I’m holding off on consuming them for now.

Maintenance has always been my greatest challenge - I can get to the goal but then I tend to slack off over time...you are just about at goal and will need to be more diligent to not gain it back.

Late night eating has been a besetting sin my whole life. For this current chapter I've committed to a low daily calorie limit and resolved not to exceed it and not to eat anything after dinner. The first month or so I felt like I was withdrawing from heroin. I caved a few times and ate late. As weight started falling off I redoubled my resolve not to eat after dinner. I have been resisting the urge and it comes less often and is weaker. If I can do it, you can too. Keep your eye on the prize.

It is good to see that I am not alone in the nuts department! Since I wrote that post, I have measured 56g (instead of 42g) and then have turned all the cannisters that contain nuts to the wall so I can't see them. I figured that I am clearly eating more than 42g so accept and embrace it and measure 14g more. Thus far I have eaten no extra nuts. That means I have had 2 nights of no extra nuts. Big deal for me!

Popcorn is a thought. It has the take a handful here and there aspect that seems to be part of what I am looking for. I think the only way it won't get out of hand is if I eat it unbuttered and unsalted. The salt always leads to more and more and ... in my world! And frankly I love butter and often can't get enough of it. I am not actually hungry in the moment just wanting some hand to mouth action:)

HCB - I am not sure if I am at maintenance just yet. I set 170 pounds almost 3 years ago because that was 100 pounds and more than that I couldn't wrap my head around. I plan to explore in 5 pound increments below 170 to see how it feels and looks. I can't imagine going lower than 140. I spent my teenage life running between 125-135 but at 62 I am not a teenager! I have been at an excessive weight since I was 20 so I don't actually know what any other weight feels like that is under 170!

Gastropod - I know there is research indicating that if you don't eat after supper you are way ahead in the weight loss world. I follow the checklist from Dr Gregor and in it he recommends to not eat after 7 pm. Last night is the first time I have ticked off that box! I think that is an area for me to explore. I think it is more habit than hunger involved. Between habit and hunger, habit is way harder to change.

You will plateau every two weeks but if you are patient you will see a big drop. Just hang tight it so worth it.
