There we go! Coming back up.

I am giving blood for the first time today. Our community is asking for those who have covid antibodies to come give blood and are doing antibody tests. They need the blood for covid patients. Not enough people with the antibodies are donating I guess. The community was hit hard a few months ago with a mysterious flu like illness that tested negative for the flu and everything they tested for. It sounds like they think it might’ve been covid.

I dislike needles and get light headed easily which is why I’ve never donated before. Time to bite the bullet and give it a go! They said I should eat something first so I’m trying to figure out what to eat that will give me some energy but not too many calories. I’m not a breakfast person at all lol. If I do eat breakfast it’s either a fast food sandwich, snickers or rice crispy treat. Guess I need to go figure out today’s meals so I know how many calories I can afford for breakfast ;).

Nice of you to donate! Take care of yourself!

Peeper... same here I have the universal blood type. Some 40 years ago I was blessed with the gift of blood donors. I have tried and donated blood over time but I am always the person who pases out from the sight of my blood and others in the donation sights. I hit the deck in high school class when we had to prick fingers in a class. I do not mind the cookies and soda they provide so time for me to put my big girl panties on and pay it forward.

So great! Will you get a confirmation that you have antibodies?

I had a snickers and propel. They said that wasn’t enough so they told me to grab some cookies or a PB&J before I could donate. First time someone’s had to twist my arm to get me to eat cookies lol. The insisted I grab another pack of cookies and a Gatorade on the way out but I slipped past the lady ;). I’m not hungry at all and feel fine. The needle hurt though! I wasn’t expecting it to be that big. But for someone that dislikes needles I can say it wasn’t bad. If the antibody test comes back positive I agreed to set up monthly donations. Now I just have to wait.

Thank you for this! And anyone else that donates.

Crazycatchick, my middle is that way! She gets sick at the sight of her own blood. She used to at any blood but we’ve been working on having her watch us clean cuts and things so she’s gotten used to seeing our blood. She wants to work in the medical field when she’s an adult so she has to get over it. I was hoping to take her with me if I start donating regularly so she could get used to seeing blood in a clinical setting. They won’t allow anyone back with me though so that’s out. My SIL is a PA and will probably let her do a job shadowing thing when she’s older. Depends on what laws and things are in place at that point.

Liv, they said it’ll take about a week to get the results because the labs are slammed. They have my email and phone number so I’m guessing they’ll let me know around the end of next week.

Kat, I just felt like it was something I could do. I forgot to ask if the blood stays in the state or not. It would be cool if I have antibodies and my blood could help someone recover!

depending on what they do with it and the antibodies, it could go far wider than your state. very cool stuff.

I'm glad everything went well. I used to donate blood anytime I could since I have O neg. I can't anymore due to anemia, which makes me sad because it was something I enjoyed. I'm the strange one that finds that stuff fascinating. lol

I always watch, I find it interesting.

I’m A+ so it’s not as needed. One of my kids is O+ which is cool. She wants to donate after we explained how her blood could be used for more people but she’s not old enough. The kids wanted to know their blood types so about a year ago we bought home kits and tested us all. We have A+, AB+ and O+.

I also hate needles.

That's so great of you to do!

Thanks :). I’ve agreed to come back as often as they’ll let me if I have antibodies. Hubby goes monthly and has been asking me to go with him. If I don’t have antibodies I may still go with him. I just really don’t like needles lol. Especially when they pull it out a bit to get a faster flow. They wanted me to go super slow since this was my first time. My blood pressure is usually on the lower end of normal so they said it may take me longer each time but not as long as this time.

I’m glad you made out ok peeper Jen friend and what you’re doing is a wonderful thing♥️ I’m A+ too.

that is great

That is super! It would be great to know you have already had it and can help people even more than the gift of blood normally is. Let us know what you find out! Back in the old days, I donated for a friend who needed surgery. Back then, with the fear of AIDS and all the unknowns, they let you bank blood for yourself of or have a specific doner. Well that's what they told me anyway when I was about 18.😁
