Reprogramming Our Inner Mind-Sue Patton Theole

If We Get In the Habit of Allowing our subconscious mind to sabotage us by nastily flashing on to the screen of our consciousness statements such as, "Stupid: You did it wrong again!". peace of mind will elude us. None of us would buy a computer or scale which did that to us. Rather, we would want a user-friendly machine that says, "Good try!"

Our minds are many times more fantastic than the very best computer and we are their only programmers. With strength, courage and persistence we can change our negative self-talk to user-friendly inner dialogue.

Nyla's therapist asked her to keep a little notebook with her at all times and write down every time she spoke badly about herself. Being resistant to knowing exactly how hard she was on herself, it took every bit of Nyla's courage to agree to the suggestion. But how often she criticized herself, it took about a month of committed awareness and writing to extinguish her negative habit.

Changing a long-standing habit, such as negative self-talk, is difficult, so it is important we have ways to remind us of the desired new behavior. An excellent help would be to expand on Nyla's notebook exercise. Since our minds work similarly to computers, it is necessary to replance erroneous commands with correct ones in order to get the results we desire. Therefore, after jotting down the unfriendly remark made to ourselves, we need to write the corresponding positive statement - the statement we would like to habitually tell ourselves.

Immediately replacing a negative statement with a positive one is a powerful assistance in facilitating change. Peace of mind is a result of peaceful thoughts.

I speak to myself in a loving and supportive way.

I fill my mind with peaceful thoughts.

Great reminder to us to try and be kind to ourselves. Thanks Lisa! No matter how much work we do on this topic it seems we are never really finished after years of negative self talk.

My notebook is going to expand, I am going to be aware of any negative, mean thoughts I am putting out there whether in traffic, the grocery store, work, etc. I am verbally abusive to my computer! I'm changing a whole lot of stinking thinking. (thinking how tired I am going to be because I woke up too early. I changed my thought to: it was a good time to wake up because I caught up with some chores and journals and I will make it through the day because I will get energy today from writing, good food, green tea, and my exercise with the children and some cardio. I will make it through another successful energetic day:) TOWANDA!!!

Welome to September, Lisa. I am sad to see summer leaving, but I do love the change in seasons and it means that my favorite season (winter)is getting closer!! I know, witer tight, but I am a winter person! I love the snow, the cold, the way the air smells, and the way that that crisp, clean smell clings to your hair, your clothes, and when someone comes inside they smell so clean!! lol Okay, I am done!

HI LISA ~ How the heck are you. I feel I have been away forever, and look at your chart ~ Wow. I have missed everyone, but OMG, have been so busy. Have time off coming and cannot wait. I loved your journal today. If I carried a notebook while driving, it would be full very quickly. Don't know how it is where you are, but here, we have "awful" drivers! My negativity (against them) is terrible I'm sorry to admit. But they just don't think..... or care. This is a little short, but I am going to try to get to more buddies. Have a marvelous evening and ..........TOWANDA!!!!!
