abbadabba's Journal, 17 Oct 16

So, I have decided that I need to ask a question when a person asks me how I am managing to lose weight. One that runs through my mind is "Are you looking to lose weight?" but that always has to be followed up by "What have you been doing so far to get there?" Maybe I should just start saying "I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and drink every night, and basically live on chips and onion dip"

Or the other comment: Well, after the water weight loss, maybe you'll get into a good program. Huh? I drink 90 ounces of liquid a day, bee-atch! That 2 pound loss ain't water weight!

If one more person says "you can't live on 1200 calories a day" I might have to slap them. Which could end badly for me, cuz I am not a good fighter and I am sure no one would put up with being slapped without me getting slapped in return. HaHa!

Let me tell you: I eat really well. I feel great. I am losing weight as well.

One of my friends who said this was told that a grown woman needs 1500 calories a day to maintain their health. Well, we are in totally different places this friend and I - first, she has blood cancer, which is incurable but will take 10 years or so to kill her, so she really needs to maintain her health in a big way. Second, she is about 100 pounds overweight and does no exercise at all. Like, she goes from her apartment to her car as her major form of movement in a day. Ok that's one.

A coworker said this to me, and well, you know, she is 6 inches shorter and about 50 pounds overweight, with a 6-month-old baby so it's "baby weight" but she was fat before she got pregnant so her judgement about what to eat is messed up already.

And, you know what, I hired a trainer, not really knowing too much about him except that he was a friend of a friend and is in phenomenal shape himself. Turns out he owns a gym. Has trained well-known professional athletes. Trains the trainers at his gym himself. Has a nutritionist at the club as well. I have lost almost 23 pounds since 4th of July. So I think he has given me a great plan to follow and to heck with everyone else.

I just have to remind myself: people are ready when they are ready and I don't need to answer any questions that I don't want to. Hence, fatSECRET because not everyone wants or needs to know how to lose weight!

Thank you for letting me vent.

Happy Monday, all, and Have a great FS day!

As my mentor says, "Pay no attention to the peanut gallery." You're in this for you, and you're winning at it. Nuff said.

The glory of this site is the delete button. I don't know if a message is sent to the originator, but it should be maybe as a s.ystem upgrade. Always listen to your own "gut" ... very nice post. Well stated.

You get to pick and choose what you want to share about yourself. Say nothing if you like. Why justify and argue with foolish people?

Some people really are interested in what is working for you, even though they may not choose to implement the same things you are doing. I recently had a friend who asked me what I was doing, followed by "because I really need to do something too." Now, she is not morbidly obese by any means, but her extra weigh is causing her problems with her back and legs. I just said "I just started really watching my carbs." (Although I am not nearly as strict about it as some here.) And that satisfied her -- if she wants more specifics, we see each other every week and she will ask. As several have said on this site, every one has to find what works for them, and there is no one plan that fits everyone.

When people are challenging what you are doing after you've told them then it's time to shut them down and end the conversation.

Thank you all for the support - I have at least 3 people in my life who have really taken my success to heart and who have bumped up their own healthy focus because of me. One is my mom - I keep telling her "do it to keep yourself alive, I need you around!" and she is doing it. So some people really do want to know and they are willing to do the work.

It took me a second to realize you were kidding about the chips and dip, because I want to learn more about THAT diet! It's good you are so well supported by the trainer and the club you go to. I couldn't lose weight on 1500 kcal a day.

I love it when people tell me that I don't consume enough calories - it always comes from someone at least 40 pounds overweight who is really just feeling guilty that they don't want to modify their WOE.

I've only had a serious weight issue for the past 7 years. I went from size 10 to 22 in a year. Since then I've tried every diet I could find. Sometimes there was limited success but in the end the diets weren't affordable and/or sustainable. When I've run into someone who's lost a bunch of weight and looks good and feels good I've genuinely wanted to know what they were doing and how it's working for them. To me, there's no better recommendation for a pathway through the maze of ideas and concepts. Truly never occurred to me that the questions would be intrusive or rude. (To be continued)

You've mentioned how much your trainer has helped you several times in your posts. Why not throw him a bit of business by handing his card out to people who ask? All you have to say in response to anyone who asks about your weight loss is, 'I've been working with a trainer who's really helped me put together a plan and a program. Would you like his card?' (It's his job to tell them about the blood, sweat, and tears that's involved!!)

I love your post Abba. I have lost weight a lot of different ways, that's why I never criticize how someone else does it. Please hang in there and don't let those comments derail you. I did that once - I kept feeling imposed upon b/c I went on a liquid diet and lost a lot of weight and people kept making comments and made me so self-conscious that I stopped and gained it back. If I ever feel myself wanting to do that again, I will march my butt right into therapy!

@chrisemchris my trainer owns a gym and I always tell people that the program is available through him and his gym. One of my friends has actually joined the gym because of her commitment to losing weight and getting healthier. It is not so much the question being intrusive, but people saying "That can't be healthy for you" or "You should really be eating more than that" really bothers me

I wish I could "like" all your comments! In a nutshell, the thing that sold me on this diet was that I end up forcing myself to eat on some nights to get in the appropriate carbs and protein. Because I am doing 10,000 steps a day and lifting weights 40 to 60 minutes a day, I need to get 500 calories of carbs (good, clean, veggie-fruit carbs) and 500 calories of protein. @LadyinDenim - you would be surprised at how much food 1500 calories is, if you skip soda, juice, white bread, white rice, white potatoes, and alcohol.

After more than a year and almost 250 pounds I still get people ask me, "have you lost weight!?" I just say I didn't notice.

@Phil....hehe! I find that most folks just want to be nosey and they aren't really wanting any tips or advice. @abbadabba....if they asked you and challenged you thereafter then the people probably asked the question so that they could be intrusive.

I've had a few people sincerely ask for advice, I give them a copy of Atkins New Diet Revolution, copies of which I pick up for pennies at the resale shops. Most people are just being nice (or snoopy).

Love all the comments!! I tell them I eat healthy, cook almost all my own natural whole foods, track on FS, and exercise. I also limited my calories to a 1200 per day average over a week and now on maint 1400 per day. Most people tell me that's too hard, they want something magic that takes no work. Now I work in a high stress mutual fund call center, mostly women and about 20% are morbidly obese. If they go on "diets" it's extreme and unstainable (one of them ate nothing but a couple pounds of chopped romaine all day and a piece of dry toast in the morning saying it was a diabetic diet!!), most have major health issues even in their 20's: I feel sad for them. I actually had one of them spread a rumor a couple years ago that I was using diet shakes when she knew my "shake" morning smoothie was a banana, kale, almond milk, nutritional yeast and flax seed. Believe me I stopped that one quick.
