Johanne's Journal, 17 Sep 15

This is a rant you might want to skip. Just sayin'.

I just got home from the Dr's. He's going to run food allergy testing. He's setting up the surgery on my right Hand. I asked him to wait until Nov. so I can get a few crucial weaving projects done. I think we finally have the issues with my bi-pap equipment provider worked out.

And then, I got a call from the woman who lives in the MIL apt. on the end of my house. She's my DIL's cousin. It's a tiny, two room place, like a small hotel suite with a kitchen. She has three VERY big dogs, one boxer and two boxer mixes. She works nights. When she got home at two in the morning and let the dogs out, one of them went after one of the two feral cats that have been hanging around and killed it. She called to let me know it was still lying there under the bushes.

The other feral cat has turned into a pet. His name is Monkey. He hung around for two years and I never fed him. Everyone knows, if you don't feed a feral cat, it goes away. Well, Monkey didn't know that. After two years of watching him get skinnier and scragglier, I gave in. I've been feeding him for the last 2 1/2 years and he will actually let me pet him now. I make sure I take the food up as soon as he is done so it won't attract other critters, including the very fat possum I've seen hanging out around the garage.

I haven't seen Monkey today. Now I'm terrified. What if her dogs go after Monkey or one of my indoor cats, who occasionally escape. I'm not sure what I would do. It's a family thing. I can't report her dogs to the animal wardens without causing a family brouhaha. My son, who is normally very sympathetic about such things and loves cats, has already said, "What do you expect? Dogs kill cats."

In my 71 years, I have never known a dog to kill a cat. Dogs usually leave cats well enough alone. I'm scared and I'm sick to my stomach and I want the dogs gone. I love dogs, but she doesn't maintain hers correctly. She ties them to a tree, right in front of her door. On a sunny day, you can see the urine crystals on the ground. On a wet day, the yard reeks. They have killed the little maple they are tied to. The mailman won't deliver the mail if they're tied out, even though he knows they can't reach the mailbox.

And, all I can picture is them taking out Monkey or Emma or Velcro.

You can report them to animal control anonymously if you live in a town My neighbor did that re: the new person across the street. She has 2 beautiful sweet young very large German Shepherds who are great with kids. she was just letting them out un supervised for hours and many of the older residents of the neighborhood who walk with their small dogs or alone were concerned. She has a fenced backyard but they were in front.

This is so sad. I to have cats. And they escape every now and then. They wont leave the yard. But the family upstairs has a big dog. I worry all the time about my old cats, and my two toy pinoodles. Im afraid the dog will catch one or scare them away.

rant away! Sometimes you just have to. And there's no reason this woman should get immunity due to her family relationships. After all, in many families, this would work in reverse and the son would be talking to his wife, urging her to talk to her cousin about this matter, because his mother deserves respect. I'm a long-time dog owner, and from your description it seems as if this woman isn't taking care of her dogs. Boxers are very energetic dogs who require more exercise than just hanging about a yard. High energy dogs almost mentally short-circuit if they're underexercised. They don't listen as well, certainly don't behave as well. A well-exercised boxer is calm. And you can train a dog to not attack cats. Family has a rottie mix who lives with 2 cats just fine. Keep looking for the cat. If you can find it, see if you can lure it to the vet, get checked out, and added to your household. And don't feel as if you're betraying family if you call about the dogs. YOU'RE being betrayed by family, when they dismiss your very valid concerns. Make the call.

I like the anonymous reporting idea -- my county has 'tethering' laws -- meaning, residents can't leave pets tied up for more than 1-2 hours at a time.

My town has leash laws. If pups are outside they either need to be fenced, on a leash or under total control of their present owner. Cats are supposed to be as well but sorry I know as a former cat owner that is almost impossible to control unless they are totally indoor cats, they do not fence well LOL . Of course feral cats are another situation.

My crazy pup chases cats to play, she isn't very big a Boston Terrier mix. She scares them but you can tell her attitude is that she wants to play, she gets all excited and happy to play, then she sulks as they hiss run away. She does this at my DD's. I do not have a cat at this point. I have had several feral cats who have become family pets when I lived in the country.

I can totally relate.. my indoor cat got out for 3 days and we couldn't find her and I was FRANTIC.. i was outside meowing , yes that's right, i was meowing to see if my cat would answer,, so i feel your pain sister.. Call animal control and see of monkey was picked up.. maybe if you describe him and ask around the neighborhood. Maybe he's cheating on your with another family.... Also, how bout an "anonymous" call on the cousin or just talk to your DIL and ask her to talk to her and let her know how concerned you are.. if my MIL brought something to me, I would listen and respect her concerns.

I LOVE my cats like children and would be SO upset. I would report anonymously to animal control and say the dogs are not being well handled and that they killed a pet cat. it is not right. I am so sad, sweetie.

Do you own the house and are renting to her? If you do pets are your rules not hers. Enforce them. Also use any local codes that are in your favor to enforce them. I had my SIL leave a car in my driveway in the way for a couple weeks which turned into 3 years. I finally told him I was being threatened by codes enforcement to either register it or move it or I would have tickets. I wasn't but I knew a neighbor was reporting other cars in the area to codes. It is a vintage Camero in decent shape so not a junker but dang I kept almost hitting it in the winter and it was hard to shovel around. SIL finally moved it. Now they are restoring it and he agrees with me sitting in my driveway it was deteriorating so it ended up positive.

Thanks, everyone. I'm hoping Monkey is terrified and will be back after the cat's body is moved. I just couldn't do it. He isn't under the bushes. He's almost in the middle of her side of the yard. If he's still there in the morning, I'm calling in a dead animal in my yard and she can deal with the consequences. I'm still feeling sick, my stomach hurts and I have a terrible head ache. It has to be stress. I can't believe the dogs did that. WFN, this is my DIL's house. I really have no input and they are so good to me. Also, my DIL is out of town until Monday at a fiber retreat. She hates that her cousin has three big dogs in that tiny place, but also hates to stir the pot. As far as legalities, she is allowed to have three animals, they are never left on the cables for longer than 30 minutes at a time, they always have water and are well fed and she has an impeccable record of vet care for all three. As Sambtween said, they're boxers. They need to run. They spend over 20 hours a day closed up in a 30'x13' space. I feel very sorry for them. A back story. Four years ago, the cousin was a very active, size 14. In the past four years, she has gone up to 340 lbs. Unlike many of us who gained gradually over many years, so our bodies could adjust to carry our weight, her body is under unbelievable stress. She can no longer move and no longer breath. She's only 52 and I don't know how much longer she can last like this. When I talk about health or food or weight loss, she gets angry. We all know this is a place we have to come to for ourselves. I've even offered to cook for her. She doesn't cook. Now, I just leave her alone. We've been trying to get her to give at least two of the dogs up to a boxer rescue. Maybe this will be the leverage we need to talk her into it. I'm going to try to sleep. I have meds, but hate to use them. See you all tomorrow. Thanks, again.

I would be psychotic over this. No cat killing in my neighborhood or you will face the wrath of Dianne and every legal sanction I have available to me. I just wrote our chief of police over a felon who walks his pit bull down our street and frightens my feral ladies who are all sitting on their own property (mine) in compliance with our Trap and Release policies..spayed with all shots and notched ears. Not to be over the top here FS friends..but it's true..evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

OMG! I am just as upset reading this as you must be. Yes, see what local codes are involved and (((((hugs))))) and prayers for an okay day. Makes me heartsick.

Call away! When my sweet indoor cat got out I was freaked I grabbed a blanket and pillow and slept on the porch in a plastic chair until he came back. 4 a.m. in the morning I finally got my bed. I have a dog and 2 cats. My cats kick the dog's butt and he's 60lbs. Dogs don't have to kill cats, they just need to be taught.

I'm still in total shock. I had an 8:00 psych appt this morning. I missed my appt. I forgot all about it because of the cat. I was in the middle of a nightmare when they called at 8:15. I grabbed my cloths and ran out to the car. THE CAT IS STILL THERE! I cried all the way through my appt. I kept waking up all night, which I never do, only to fall into another foul dream. I can't believe she just left him there . . . AGAIN! If she leaves for work again and leaves him, I'm calling. At this point, I don't care about the repercussions. I'm terrified that, now that the dogs know they CAN kill, they'll do it again. I know this sounds silly. Monkey barely lets me touch him, but, after years of taking care of him, I love him. I'm pretty sure he was someone's pet that got lost or dumped and that he's neutered. Unlike the cat who got killed, he's never sprayed or marked. He's not all beat up and scarred from fighting. The black cat was. He's never had kittens. (He's very fluffy, so I don't know if he's male or female.) anyway, I'm rambling. I haven't been this upset/scared/angry/sad in a long time. I want to wake her up and scream at her! Thanks for reading my rant. I have no one else to rant to!

Definitely talk to her. You have every right and are not crossing any boundaries, family or not, to voice your concerns. I have had boxers and pit bulls that would never hurt a cat... chase them maybe, but not hurt them.

The owner dictates the behavior of the dog, not the breed.

Ashley, I know that. I love boxers. I love dogs. I don't have one, presently, because I'm no longer active enough to care for one. As I said earlier, in my 71 years, I've never known a dog to kill a cat. Normally, cats can definitely hold their own. This had to be a vicious attack and I'm not blaming the dog. I know who's to blame.

I would report it to Animal Control. When this woman lets her dogs out, she should keep them on a leash and control them, especially as they are large dogs. So sad.
18 Sep 15 by member: Gigi39
They were on cables. Unfortunately, the cat was in my window looking in and didn't get away fast enough. She finally removed the body about an hour ago. I think she was hoping I would do it for her. I just couldn't!

Awww. sweetie, again I am so sad. You are right, too. I suggest you talk to whomever can tell her what needs to change.
