Fritzy 22's Journal, 16 Feb 23

I finally cut the cord with Dish TV. I spent an hour and a half at least getting them to agree to cancel my service. They remind me of Sirius radio, they just kept trying to make me offers to get me to keep the service. I kept telling them, I want to quit, I want to quit. Turn it off! Finally when they realized I wasn't going to continue with them they said I needed to return something called a LMD (I think) that is located on the dish. I told them I wasn't going to climb on the roof - I live on a hill, I'm old, and I don't want to fall. They said if I didn't return it I would be charged for it. I asked how much and was told anywhere from $5 to $150. Finally they said they would send a technician to get the item and the cost for the technician to come out was $145. They were going to get money out of me one way or another. Anyway, he came out today and now I have no TV. Not sure how to get by. I ordered an Amazon Fire stick and that should be here in a couple of days. I hope I can figure out how to use it, but for now I just am playing DVD's for the noise.

Poor me! Since I was waiting all morning for the technician to come out (anytime between 8 and noon) I didn't take Bobby for a walk. We went on a long walk yesterday. He is still licking his paw raw where he had a tick. I got some little booties that he wears most of the time, but as soon as the sock comes off he is licking the foot.

I did okay with the diet today and hope to stay really good until my next weigh day, Sunday. I may go out to eat on Monday if I lose at least 1 pound.

We stopped our service with them in December and didn't have to return anything or pay anything. I wonder why you did.

If you have time, email them about the arbitrary cost quoted to your and the service charge and call it out as taking advantage of a senior citizen. They’re crooks. I had to escalate with them when they were taking advantage of my dad. You might also mention that you’ll email your local representative. Depends on how much time you want to invest. I’ll never use them again.

Fritzy, didn't you say before that you own a smart TV, like Samsung? It's just a one-time login to your internet using the TV's remote. You don't need an Amazon Fire Stick for the smart TV.

Fritzy, I don't know you but your comment totally caught my attention. I had Direct and Dish over a decade ago. I haven't missed them. I live in a small town and used our local internet and cable company. I could watch most everything I wanted. I am cheep so I had their basic package. But we have retired and now take off to warmer places in the winter. For two years I kept my beloved now cable people because I was afraid I would not have good TV. But we were paying $45 dollars extra on top of our internet to have this service just to have TV when we come home for a week. This year I had them turn off the basic cable. So far so good, I might not even have turn it on when I get back this summer. I use my smart TV and internet. It takes a bit of time to figure out set up BUT if I can do it ANYONE can. I also have the Fire-stick and that will work okay also. I sometimes use one and other times use the other. Once you get set up there are free apps you can use, like Pluto. It is free TV you are limited in the channels, but there are other apps too. You just have to play with it. Hopefully you have a local friend or family or neighbor that can come and help if you need it but if not you can call Amazon Fire-stick or your internet people or your TV people to guide you. PS I watch a lot of my favorite shows on the internet. Some shows on NBC, CBS that I am addicted to. I even watch Pluto, Freevee (lots of movies and old stuff) The CW, lots of political stuff (either direction). It sounds like these folks here will also help you if you reach out to them. Good luck and I would push back like the others suggested on getting your money back from Dish. You shouldn't have to pay them to disconnect, I never had to. Only thing to watch for with Smart TV, or Amazon Fire-Stick is that some apps have a monthly cost (paramount+, AppleTV, Youtube, Disney, maybe Hallmark but I have watched a lot of those on Pluto. I haven't down loaded any of the apps you pay for - mostly because I am trying to watch less TV. Hope this was helpful. Till you Amazon Firestick comes - try to watch some TV on the Internet - google or duckduckgo, Pluto TV or Freevee or even try Roku. I have downloaded all sorts of stuff, even free movies and documentaries on Youtube. Good Luck.

Maybe ask a veterinarian about the licking his tick bite area raw?? That bite could be serious. Can’t believe they expected you to climb up and retrieve that part on the dish! Rediculous

We have Dish but use our fire sticks slot as well so we are contemplating getting rid of Dish. There is so much you can watch with a fire stick.

Thanks Kat - I may email somebody. I told the representative to let me talk to her supervisor, and was told she was trying to find someone to talk to me but no one would say anything different. I also told her I was sure someone could waive the requirement to get the item back. After an hour and a half I realized she wasn't going to to anything but state "requirements". It's too bad, I loved their service for about 15 years.

Thanks Bananas. I have a 10 year old smart tv. I don't even remember how to use it for streaming. But ill figure it out. It's in the family room and I rarely watch tv there. I have 3 TVs and will try the fire stick on a tv I use most often. I usually use a Kindle Fire to watch Amazon prime.

Thanks KC - I already pay for Amazon prime which covers free shipping on anything I order and for anything I watch there. I've figured out how to watch the local news for free and at pay for Paramount Plus because unlike to watch lots of the shows they offer. Otherwise, I can find free streaming apps once I figure out how to use everything. I'm glad you've got it all figured out!

Thanks StormsGirl. The vet removed the tick when I took Bobby in for an appointment about something else. I may call the office about him licking the paw when ever the sock is off. I've been washing his foot and put Neosporin between the toes he licks before putting the sock on. He's had skin allergies in the past

Thanks Diana. If you call Dish and want to avoid spending nearly 2 hours with them trying to telling you out of it - just tell them you are moving. When they say you can move your Dish service, tell them you are moving in with someone who has service! Good to know you like the fire stick.

We canceled DirectTV (also satellite) a couple of years ago (I think) cause the cost kept going up. We had always been able to negotiate a deal, but after AT&T took them over, they wouldn't offer deals. We have firesticks on 3 TVs. We decided to sign up for Hulu Live & get pretty much all the same programming we had for half the cost. Hulu also offers their own original programming & if I miss a show I'd like to watch it's available the next day. My sister has Sling TV that's pretty cheap. Our friends have YouTube for live TV. There are many options for free TV viewing. I wanted to be able to watch network TV if I chose. We also have Amazon Prime & access to Netflix.

You can get the basics with a digital antenna and buy an attachment to stream from your phone. We get Amazon prime for free for years and peacock and paramount are not bad either depending on what you watch. We decided to do this- Florida cable is 70% cheaper than Indiana. It has worked out good now, we pay nothing to get the shows we want. Also my other half found a free link to espn + as well

I guess I just don’t watch enough TV . I have Att direct Tv, just the most basic pkg. available. Reliable but costly. No smart TV, no big screen. Works for me

Sounds like you got ripped off, must be a recent thing they are doing for extra revenue since when we canceled we didn't have to return anything. That's terrible.

with a streaming box like that fire stick or a chrome cast you can watch YouTube and a lot for free all day.
