Fritzy 22's Journal, 05 Dec 22

A quart of half and half doesn't last me a week when I am sharing it with a little feral cat who wants some twice a day. I remember last Monday the little grocery store close to my house had no half and half, no quart, no pint and not even a half gallon. I know they get the delivery on Friday. I needed more this morning and really didn't want to have to drive a half hour to the next town. So I stopped into the little store first, just to be sure. They had lots of half and half! It must be hard for them to know how much to order. I live in a small town, approx 7 or 8k people. But most of us live in a gated community with 1800 homes. Many people from the San Francisco Bay Area have vacation homes here. So I think what happens at times is so many people come up with their families for holidays that the Holiday Market just runs out of everything. I've noticed close to the holidays there isn't a bag of any kind of potato chips to be found, which isn't a bad thing for me. So I took lots and lots of words just to say I feel lucky that I was able to make a quick trip to the store and get half and half. Then went to the feed store. Birds and squirrels are extra hungry during rainy days.

It's been raining here since Friday I think. We've had so many years of drought that I forgot what long, rainy and dreary days are like. But I am loving it!

Having left over chili as my main meal today. Later this week I will go to the next town over for more brussels sprouts and other items from their produce department. The roasted yam last week was delicious.

Bobby is funny when it is raining. He does not want out. I know how often he usually needs to go out. Yesterday around 4:30, about 2 hours after his dinner I went to the door and said "you want to go potty outside?" It was pouring outside. He looked at me like I was crazy and stayed in his bed.

Glad you like the rain, but I understand the pup's attitude!

We spend way too much money on food for the wild life. We always have tons of dreary days in late Fall and Winter. Enough to drive most people batty.

I am glad you finally got half and half without too much waiting and looking for it. Do you live in a small town? Of course, I guessed because of your stories about wild living guests. When I was a little girl, I used to stay with my parents in the mountain. They were physical workers at a mushroom farm, and sometimes they made charcoal. Thanks to the environment around me, I became a nature-friendly person, but I am now living in a big city. So, the first time I found a park with so many trees and wildlife, I felt like I had come back home and felt inner peace. However, I couldn't go there for many years because my life was too hectic without positive energy. But, now I go there 3-4 times weekly to walk and get healing power. It is the Kissena Park in Queens, NY. Even it has trails.

So glad you found half and half so close to home for you and little kitty. Rainy here today. A good day to sip, sip all day. Bobby is smart! He knows he is like us and don't want to go out in that. lol I am glad you are getting rain. I love roasted yams, too. You can get frozen, cubed that will get you through when you don't have fresh ones on hand. Hope you're having a great week!:)

Next time you are in a city find a Trader Joe’s and buy their CREAM that comes in eight ounce boxes and don’t require refrigeration. Keep them on hand for just these occasions and then just dilute to make half and half. I also keep packages of powdered whole, 2% and non fat milk on hand. Powdered milk is not like the powdered milk of old. Once mixed and allowed to sit for a couple of hours to meld the flavors, you can’t tell the difference. I also buy quart sized boxes of shelf stable whole and 2% milk to keep on hand as well as cans of evaporated milk. All part of my earthquake program but I use these products in my everyday cooking as well.

Maybe you just need a pet cow to add to your animal family?🤪

Thanks Abba - I just appreciate the rain because it's been lacking for so long. Nice to be retired and not have to get out and drive in it.

Thanks Morticia - I just went to the feed store AGAIN 2 days ago. I spend so much money there. But it's hard when I see 20 tiny little birds hopping all over my deck or the back yard looking for a little sunflower chip.

Thanks Anne - yes I live in a small town. It's a rural area but I live in a nice gated community built around a lake where lots of people have vacation homes. Some deer are almost tame.

Thanks Navywife. Bobby does not like to go outside when it's raining! Sometimes, when I know it's been too long, I'll put on my coat with a hood and go out with him. If I go, he's fine to go with me. I've never seen frozen yam cubes in any grocery store. I'll have to look. Maybe with the frozen potatoes?

Thanks Kenna, the nearest Trader Joe is about 60 miles from me. I do have a can of evaporated milk, somewhere.

Thanks Bananas - Just what I need, a pet cow. Because it would become a pet.

They are in with the frozen vegetables!:)

Thanks Navywife - I've never seen them before and I often look in the frozen vegetable area. I'll look carefully next time I'm at the store.

Lake of the Pines?

Bardelmeier, no, but I know where Lake of the Pines is. Never been there but believe it is similar to my community.
