kattay's Journal, 14 Mar 15

I have decided to go back to my old strategy of cutting out the grains and beans so I can get over this hump. As far as I am concerned, winter is over! I think I have gotten foods such as soups, stews, chili, etc. out of my system for awhile. Even though the grains were fiber filled whole wheat, whole grains including the steel cut oatmeal and natural rolled oats, I feel they are slowing me down. Beans are very healthy with nutrients and fiber but loaded with "weighing down" carbs.

Love the spring/summer when I get out more. The freshest and best low carb foods are more available. Low carb veggies and a bit of fruit are my "go to". I actually like salads when its warmer but don't want them in cold weather.

My plan is to keep my protein grams around the 70s. I try to keep under 25 grams of protein each meal because research (MSN health site) has shown anything over 30 grams is converted to fat for storage. I have enough in storage! The 70s has worked best for me in the past. Would like to keep my carb grams under 15 per meal. As always, I try to keep sugar under 50. Of course, only healthy fats. I am going to try really hard not to be so concerned about fat grams as long as they are healthy fats from small portions of seeds, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, natural lean protein foods, and portion controlled dairy. So long I have thought of all fat as the enemy, to be avoided or kept under the 35% range of that food pie chart. I need to stay under my RDI. FS shows my RDI as 1400 but it is high compared to some other sites. Compromising at around 1200 to 1300 depending on future results.

Please wish me luck! I really want to celebrate reaching my next goal with a major Happy Dance!

Thanks LRFB! I'm going back to the trial and error method :) Sometimes, what worked in the past isn't so good for the here and now. I might be changing my protein or other macros next month if this plan doesn't show decent results.

Thanks wholefoodnut! I was really enjoying the beans and whole grains. Loved the natural fiber. Just trying to make a difference in the weight department instead of jumping back and forth on the same numbers.

Sometimes you have to switch things up a bit to trick your body a bit out of it's comfort zone. I've done it several times along the way. Increased salads for a while last year, added more fish protein for awhile. Just a change, more meat when I was playing with my new smoker last summer.

wholefoodnut, thanks I really appreciate your input. I know you are doing great! I started the last couple of weeks to do more baking fish instead of out of the can. I don't know if that will help because the canned tuna and salmon didn't show salt added. I do eat a lot of fish compared to chicken or turkey. Beef is seldom on my menu. You are right about having to switch things up a bit. I'm past due for change in food intake.

If you can eat dairy try a good brand of Greek yogurt. Plain if at all possible and add your own fruit. I've gotten so that I really miss it if I don't eat some at least once a day. Lots of protein.

Thanks KSttride for your input. I do eat a lot of plain greek yogurt (with live cultures). I do like putting unsweetened fruit in it. Also for a chocolate taste treat, I put in unsweetened baking chocolate powder with unsweetened fruit or a bit of stevia or honey. I use yogurt as a sub for dairy in a lot of dishes I make. Seldom a day goes by without using some yogurt. Even the whey from yogurt I will put into eggs to make scrambled eggs. I don't like runny yogurt :) I used to use yogurt for salad dressing but I have found cottage cheese works great as a sub for the creamy salad dressings without the tangy taste. I just add spices like garlic powder, pepper, etc. I plan to use cottage cheese as a sub for mayo too after I read that tip on a food site.

Sounds like you're going toward my Banting Diet - I've cut out all grain except coconut and almond flours. Only fats I eat are pasture fed butter (kerrygold), coconut oil (or almond/macadamia/or olive oil) Banting is High fat, low Carb and Moderate Protein. I've been stuck last 2-3 wks but think that might be that I'm not drinking my water. Good luck to you.

Thanks dreamcatcher10! Congrats on the gym! Wish they had something like that here but walking and my weights work for me until they do. The local Y has very few machines that everyone stays on, no pool, and the membership fees are too high. Not worth my time or money. Limited parking which stays full. Small town :) but I love it here. Have fun and take care!

Thanks you Mary Charity! I did read up on the Banting Diet. It is a great plan. It does seem like I am trying Banting out. My plan is what I did the last two years except in the fall/winter. I can't quite let go of peanuts, peanut butter and chocolate :) I do eat unsweetened chocolate which is really healthy. I sweeten it with stevia if I'm not mixing into something with fruit. I'm thinking the lists I read were outdated in the sense that chocolate used to be a major no in any diet plan but now there is research that dark 70% cocoa or higher is healthy in moderation. Just like eggs and coconut oil which is allowed now on most plans. Also on the "no" list are some of the items I have super seldom but probably won't be giving up like beer :) Good luck with Banting! It certainly is doable. I am trying to drink more water too.

Kattay, I read your journal late. You have done so well in losing weight and you have the nutrition down great. I'm wishing you good luck!

Thank you Deb! I look forward to the day where I can be where you are, on maintenance. Might not be in the cards for me, but I will work towards that on this journey! I had to laugh at one of my own comments. I had one (3/4s) beer last year with some blue crabs. Sounded like I drink beer a lot :) Just sayin', if I eat some blue crabs this summer, I fully intend on having another :)

I'm a definite believer in keeping the sugars below 50 grams a day. I read an interview about a woman who lost over 100 pounds and that was one of her tips. :)
