erikahollister's Journal, 05 Feb 22

I went to the doc yesterday for my 'annual' physical. I's actually been 3 years due to COVID. I'm still recuperating from Covid, and I let her give me two vaccines (pneumonia and flu), so now I feel sick again. ARGH! My left arm is to painful that I slept in my clothes last night, because couldn't undress myself. I hope this passes quickly. On top of that my lipid profile came back with very high LDL. The keto gurus on YouTube don't seem to think it's too big a deal, but I expect my doc to call me on Monday with a Statin scrip. Which I will refuse. I may have to figure this one out.

You could have the big fluffy LDL if you are lower carb especially. You can get a fractionated test that will tell you if you do but often you have to pay for it out of pocket. I have also refused statins. My HDL is 60.

Disclaimer: I'm no doctor, so this is info, not medical advice. I watched a video yesterday with Dr. Robert Lustig who said it was important to look at your triglycerides divided by your HDL. A ratio of 1.5 or lower is really good, while 2.5 or higher, you need to worry. I can't vouch for this (obviously), but I have his book, Metabolical, on hold at the library because I'm curious to learn more

Thank you to all. @ Writingwyo. I'll check it out. My ratio is 1.7, so pretty good. I like Robert Lustig, but I haven't read his new book.

Keto scares me after hubbys triple bypass. Mediterranean diet, that’s the one I decided to go with for us both.

Good advice from Writinghyo, I think. But are you pushing cruciferous veggies through, too? Just wondering.

Sorry, Writingwyo... I was asking Erika... should have written that clearer. I agree with your advice. Have a nice day.

Intermittent on the cruciferous veggies, Bill. Is that related to cholesterol?

The LDL test just notices fat, not healthy fat like in avocados and coconut oil. So, there’s a higher level more specific LDL test that can be done but I forget the name of it.

I'll ask the doc about it if she calls. After watching a ton of keto world YouTube videos, it seems that many doctors don't think it means much. But still most docs are trained to put you on a Statin drug (even though it has a lot of side effects and doesn't help).

Erika, I eat them for the phytonutrients, the fiber, and to just keep things moving. Writingwyo, we are all good! Appreciate your thoughts.

My chol is 230 mg/dl, LDL 138 mg/dl. I never had such bad indexes even when i was double weight, completely sedentary, eating whatever mostly all kind of red meat and pies. I am a clean eater for nine years. The only significant change in my life is that i stopped lifting weights due to covid. No vaccination, No gym. When i was losing weight rapidly, my chol got sky high. Endocrinologist gave me light statins and i got rhabdomyolisis in no time! Cardiologist said no need for statins, chol would fall by the time i stopped losing weight and he was right! So i know i am completely intolerant to statins. I try to control it by eliminating all meat (except fish) eggs, full fat yogurt and pies. My trigl are 49 mg/dl and HDL 81 (never smoked, never drinked), so the division is 0.60 which is supposed to be good. Although i am very high on carbs, no less than 55%, my A1c is 4.6%. But i am also high in fiber, 50-80 grm. So i pray and hope there is no silent damage taking place in my veins or else...All my relatives are on all kind of strong statins and have no issue at all.

Hi again -- here is a very interesting and clarifying interview with Dr. Robert Lustig. He is an expert on Cholesterol. This is a YouTube video that sheds some light on a complex topic. I've ordered his book, too. If you're trying to interpret your lipid panel, I highly recommend this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3rsNCFNAw8

I think we are still cavemen in many fields. Even doctors dare to change their minds continuously. I hope you feel better Erika, and I am glad you got the pneumonia shot, I may get that this year as well. I’ll plan a sick day just in case.😊👍🌺

I used to brush off most vaccines, but I'm taking them more seriously recently. I still have to go in again for tetanus and shingles. My doc told me to spread them out, so as not to overwhelm my system all at once.

Thanks for the video link. I was shocked. It explains lots of my questions. I have to reconsider my diet as long as i put all this information in a row in my mind. Really helpful.
