jmb3450's Journal, 12 Oct 14

So much for my last journal entry on keeping things in check with food over the weekend, yesterday I jumped off of the deep end. I'd forgotten it was "Caramel Apple Day", a celebration of family and food that we've become part of - my wife and I are kind of adopted members of a family at church so we've been invited to the celebration the past few years that includes their extended family and a few friends. One of the traditions is everyone brings a dessert that has apples in it, then two of the brothers judge them for a winner, a third judge is selected in case there is a tie and I was the third judge this year. So....sampling 23 different desserts, had to re-sample a few in narrowing the winners down, and that was before dinner even started, then I just said what the heck and had bigger portions later of the ones I really liked. My wife made a delicious braided apple bread so I had to get a piece of that too. I tried to enter the food into my diary but it's really just a guess - my calorie count and everything else is sky high and probably ate more than that even shows. Oh well...it's really a big deal for their family and we had a great time, ending the evening playing guitar and singing songs around a bonfire.

But today it shows in the scale, up 7 1/2 lbs to 229 overnight. Today I fasted until mid afternoon and will keep calories low for the next few days to try and make up for it, drinking lots of water to flush out the fluids. Maybe I can still record a loss this week, we'll see.

Bounce back Jmb! Although, there are worse ways to add pounds besides being an apple dessert judge. At least the apples are healthy for you! You will get back to it tomorrow. Good luck!

I ate Pizza Hut pizza for my kid's birthdays and then cake and ice cream and cake, twice. I have two sons that both have birthdays in September. What I have found over the years that helps with these splurges is simply to wash it away with water. Drink water all day and all night. This is a good thing to do all the time. I also have diabetes and even the emergency room (the couple of times years ago that I had to go there) had me drink a big glass of water and then gave me a little saline in an IV drip. You won't be actually just washing food from your gut but you probably now that every food we eat is turned into glucose. Glucose in your blood can easily be lowered with plenty of good fluids, not sodas or juice with sugar added. I ate at least eight pieces of pizza and cheese breadsticks and desert breadsticks those times and managed to lose a pound by the next day. Also, special occasions are just that. They are SPECIAL. So Enjoy them! I am not saying make everyday a holiday or trying to give you excuses but it is not a sin to eat and have a good fellowship from time to time. Also, you might want to read up on how doctors (and recently, bodybuilders) use a ketosis diet where the patient is actually fed a higher fat diet and it prevents their bodies from using muscle tissue for energy. It trains the body to use fat. It has been used since the 60's to treat epilepsy patients. http://www.webmd.com/epilepsy/guide/ketogenic-diet
