I am facing up to my old nemesis, my spinal issues. I cycle through these phases where I start moving a lot more, feeling better all around, for a while. I get excited about how much easier my weight-loss journey is going to be adding exercise. And then...the pain starts. I'm three weeks into this most current attempt at weight loss and in that time I have been walking 2-3 times a week and doing calisthenics or an exercise video (strength training) 2-3 times a week as well. I am taking it slow and not overdoing it, but despite that, I hit a wall yesterday. I woke up with my left leg and foot throbbing. I headed off to work and tried to take it easy. I came home and felt good enough to attempt my strength training. It went alright, but I felt these annoying cold sensations running down my left leg, like someone was filling it with ice cold water. I had plans with a friend to go to "American Hustle" at our town's vintage theatre. She wanted to take a pit-stop at our local brewery/pub, who host "Purls and Pints" the 3rd Thursday of every month.

I was proud of myself for eating at home and bringing a healthy snack for at the movies. I sat calmly as other people ordered delicious food and beverages and I just drank my water. But, that amount of sitting, followed by the movie, was just not good for me.

It has been over a year since I have had an experience like last night. The movie was great, but all I could think about the entire time was, "Ow-ow-ow-ow, I want to go home and sit Indian-style, or do back stretches, or just GO TO BED!!!" When the movie was finally over and I made it home, I ate a late-night sensible snack, did a few stretches, started some laundry (work uniforms), and hit my bed and the heating pad.

Today I feel a little better, but since I have to work a 4-hour shift, come home and neaten the house for a showing tomorrow, and be on-call tomorrow, I'm a bit worried. I guess I'll plan on taking it easy come Sunday.

So, bottom line, I will try to at least keep moving to some degree, but if this pain continues to crop up, I may have to change my routine a bit. I am just tired of this being an issue. It's clear that putting on the 40 lbs. I have over the last 10 years since my injury is not that surprising, in view of this stupid battle.

Working out with a bad back is tough. Excersizes can create more pain making you less likely to stick to it. I had to do super baby steps with the muscles in those areas. Good luck and stay positive.

Hate that you are having trouble again! At least you are feeling better today. And it doesn't hurt to know that eating healthy and losing weight can do nothing but help. Please take care of yourself!!!

I have an off the wall cure that really helped me when I had a large open wound. Every night when the weather was cooperating, I would just sit out in the moonlight. Even my doctor wanted to know what I had done to cause the healing to speed up. (Healed more in three weeks than it had in 5 months) It might not work for everyone, but, hey it's free! And the quiet meditation in nature is always pleasant.

Thanks, guys! Hey, SheaDlady, anything is possible! I'm glad your doctor wanted to know what your secret was! We have a lot of cloud cover in Oregon, so we don't get to enjoy as many clear nights, unfortunately. I do sit outside whenever I can and just soak in the good vibes of the outdoors.

I feel for you.Maybe you could just walk instead of all the other stuff.Maybe your back and leg handle just that.I think eating right and walking should help you lose weight.Good luck and best wishes.

rockytu, I value your suggestion. If it gets any worse, that may be what I have to do. I just REALLY want to build some muscle, too. I used to have a fabulous metabolism when I had more muscle mass. I'm not doing heavy weights. I think my core muscles are just weak enough that until they get stronger, my back pain is going to be a problem.

How I feel for you Gillian. My back was broken too a few years ago, along with other injuries. I know how debilitating it can be and something of what you’re feeling. It is so good that you can walk but too much exercise may do you more harm while you are healing. Try not to push yourself too much. I’d love to be able to walk but my legs and ankles were injured too so I can’t get around very well and trying to exercise is out of the question. I have to build up muscle too for the operations so I bought a vibration platform, a Hypervibe and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s wonderful for exercising and toning your whole body. You only have to stand on it at first and later as you get stronger you can do exercises. I advanced to a bit of gentle twisting and am now doing squats on it. It’s a bit expensive but some gyms do have them and you could try it out there. Here’s an article about them. I only just found it last night when I was looking for a Mayonnaise recipe lol. It's further down the page at the end of the Vibration Therapy article which is worth a read – http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/hwnl_8-2.htm and a US site - http://us.hypervibe.com/blog/whole-body-vibration-vs-localized-vibration-therapy-similar-principles-different-benefits/
