Les Girth's Journal, 23 Nov 20

From a trip to China in Oct. 2019 just before Covid outbreak there. I walked up to a food truck and this is what they were selling. I thought you might get a kick out of it!

they are and it's because they are mostly keratin, similar to hair and fingernails. delicious! I've had ants and crickets, but that's as far as I've willingly ventured. we all eat bugs, we just prefer not to know it.

I may just stick to that stuff that come in a box if I want keratin

I didn't try it. Vendor got a good laugh. Perhaps better marketing? Grind and package as animal kindom nutrition powder. Sufficiently nebulous?

I remember seeing this on a food cart in Cambodia, I could not bring myself to eat the bugs. how could they be hygienic!! I know heat destroys certain "bugs"(aka virus bugs, not animal bugs), but I just can't convince myself they are not dangerous and gross. don't cockroaches carry diseases?! (for example). Arent scorpions poisonous?! Bleh. A girl or 2 in our group (it was a school trip) tried them and they made a big CRUNCH sound blehhh!!. Same girl also ate a fish eye, I remember it's squishiness and vitreous-ness when the bit down, with her front teeth

The fish eye staring at me from her front teeth as this girl giggled and bit down is an image I will never forget

If nothing else, this thread will kill some appetites today.

Lee Girth - yes, this thread has done a better job curbing my appetite than any diet pill (or 'superfood') ever has

Katsolo - yes apparently we statistically swallow a certain amount of spiders in our sleep per lifetime.. im not sure how true that is but the other night I saw a daddy long legs walk down quickly the wall and towards my blissfully sleeping partner (who had his mouth open to boot!) I'm a vegetarian and really try not to kill bugs but I panicked, it was basically on top of him!! and he has beautiful luscious hair that had the spider reached it would have never been able to find it. So I did the 1st thing I could think of and snapped the towel I was holding at it,, don't know if I got him or where he went or if he survived and I had just angered him and the next few generations of his descents.. infact i probably ENSURED he ran into my partners luscious mane.. 0h well. I had to do something I couldn't let it disappear into A. his luscious hair B. his open, drooling mouth or C. somewhere on our bed (even in or under my pillow arghh!!) cringe cringe cringe.
