Kenna Morton's Journal, 18 Apr 20

Over the past couple of years that I have belonged to FS many people have slammed the medical profession, science, schools and anyone else they could think of to blame for their obesity because the didn’t “tell” them or educate them, or baby them more or cheer them on or support them more and that was why they are obese. Just this week alone the following programs have been on TV on PBS.
—-THE TRUTH ABOUT FAT covers the role of lectin and genetics in the obesity problem
—-Ken Burns did a program call THE GENE
—-MYSTERIES OF SLEEP
—-THE PARENT’S GUIDE TO CHILDHOOD OBESITY
—-BLOOD SUGAR RISING
These were all excellent program. I really enjoyed the program called the truth about fat. Why sumo wrestlers don’t have heart disease. Why fat is essential to our health. The role of hormones, heredity, genetic mutations in obesity.

This fabulous information is out there. You parents— include this type of programing in your home schooling efforts as an educational tool for you teenage kids. And, of course, Google is your friend. I think learning more about the current thinking on obesity will really help a lot of people see that their problem is not only their overeating issues but many other factors that they might not have a lot of control over. It may not make your journey easier but it can really help improve a self image and give you some encouragement.

Amongst the developed nations of the world, the USA is #1 in obesity. Not really the #1 we should aspire to be

Maybe if we stop eating so many pre-prepared foods, and stop demonizing healthy fats, we'll improve - so much sugar and other stuff added, to make up for "reduced fat" . . .

Motivation is the key. And I speak from my own misgivings. Most diets and programs have been around forever with various names and tweaks. Applying what we know is tbe key, easier said the done.

I think the only doctor I disliked for how she treated my obesity was one that said "you're fat, you need to lose weight", and when I asked how she replied "stop eating". Not stop eating so much, no talk of exercise, just called me fat and told me to stop eating. I was 18 at the time and had just gained 100 lbs in a year from a medication I had been taking. I wasn't able to lose that weight until I stopped taking the medication. It was awful. Now, I do take full responsibility for poor eating and exercise habits but a little help from a medical professional would've been nice. And at the time, we didn't have internet, only had cable sometimes, I didn't have a cell phone, and everyone I knew was anorexic, bulimic, or overweight. Honestly, google is the world's greatest thing man. Now I can just search my health related questions. 🥰

It was also pretty demoralizing hearing the doctor, who was 5 ft even and maybe 70 lbs talk about how she can eat whatever she wants and not gain a pound to her nurse friends. Even at my thinnest I was 120 and definitely didn't eat enough.

Truly, motivation is wonderful, but in reality it will not carry you to your goal by itself. It’s habit that takes you to the goal post. When your way of eating becomes so natural that it is just like breathing and you aren’t always in a state of deprivation. Few people can live like that. .

Very true kenna, I've finally developed those habits. Though, I do have the support of my husband because I'm not gonna lie, I'm a self defeatist especially when diet and exercise is involved. And maybe my weight is higher than what people expect but I eat well and exercise so I count that as a win. Plus, I feel good. When I was unhealthy I was all bleh but I feel good now. Also, yes, healthy fats are healthy. Haha.
