erikahollister's Journal, 22 Jul 19

I just came back from a family weekend / house party in New Hampshire. My adult children love to cook and eat and drink. We had a lovely time. I didn't drink, and my eating was somewhat controlled, but not perfect. One choice I regret was that I decided to break my usual avoidance of artificial sweeteners by having some sugar-free ice cream when we stopped for treats after swimming. They served me a huge 'small' sugar free maple walnut and it was delicious. Later that evening, however, it turned my whole digestive system to liquid. OMG. I had to get up four times from the dinner table. I've experienced rumbly tummy from sugar alcohols before, but this was dramatic. So, live and learn. This was a 'treat' I'll pass up next time! I do fine with stevia, so I'll stick to that in the future. I gained three pounds, but I'll wait to log it until I've lost it again.

I’m glad you had a good time! My stomach doesn’t like anything greasy/deep-fried these days, either. I never thought about artificial sweeteners doing that, too; thanks for the info! 😊🎈

Sugar alcohols foul me up. I have a temperamental GI-Tract to begin with so I avoid anything known to give me a flare up. My wife had a pretty nasty bout of food poisoning last week, gave her the same kind of IBS-D symptoms I used to get all the time before I cut out the high fodmap foods, if nothing else I hope she gained some empathy for why I avoid that stuff.

Maltitol should really be thought off as a tool to clear up constipation than a sweetener. I do OK with some of them. But then I have heard that if you OK it is because you absorb the sugar and carbs so I do not know.

I have severe trouble with Xylitol, but much less with the other sugar alcohols. I recently tried Allulose - it tastes like sugar, 70% as sweet, and truly zero glycemic impact. I have used it for ice cream, flourless chocolate cake, and pecan pralines: the texture was excellent, none of the graininess I get with Erythritol. Also: Cyclamate tastes better in hot drinks than Stevia, it's still available in Canada and Europe. I bought it on eBay.

Same here with the Sugar hols. I am learning to leave them alone. I had SF jello and woo, I was sick all night.

Thanks for the commiseration and tips. Now I know that if I ever need a laxative, I'll just treat myself to a 'no sugar added' ice cream treat. Ugh! @Gz9gig I'll try your tips, though I think I'd be better off just avoiding fake sweets.
