Kenna Morton's Journal, 26 Jun 19

Today at the pool I talked to an acquaintance who was a little upset. She is a bad diabetic, type 2 who has refused to do much to help herself and just takes the pill and lives with it. You see, a “pill” is worth it to be able to continue eating what she wants. She is overweight, actually obese. Setting the stage here, Bear with me. This lady is an educator (retired). She went yesterday for her annual physical. Surprise to her, she was also sent for a cognitive study. One of the things they had her do was count backward by threes starting at 99 —- while walking backward. She could not do it. She said that the information just wasn’t there. Really frightened her. After that test and several others were completed Her doctor told her that she was possibly developing early dementia from the damage being done to both the blood vessels and the neurons of her brain from the long standing yo-yo effects of chronic ups and downs of her blood sugar. His recommendation was to decrease her carbohydrates to 120, start insulin and begin resistance training and cardio exercises. She swims every day for about an hour but he wants to see more cardio activity (heart attack 15 years ago). She also will be going through diabetic education again. He also told her that she has six months to show progress and if she continues her non compliance he is going to severe their doctor patient relationship. She was asked to sign a pre printed form stating that she had received all of her results, received the recommendations and understood that she may be required to find a new endocrinologist to assume further care.. Doctors are becoming fed up and taking action of their own. Another friend has already received walking papers from two doctors.

These doctors do not want to be sued by patient's and/or family saying they did not give sound advise, when actually they did. Plus the fact they feel like it is a waste of their time to keep giving good advise while the patient takes non of their advice. The contract is a protection for the doctor.

Wow that is pretty interesting. I have followed the carb, diabetes and dementia discussion but I was not aware that there are doctors out there actually giving advice based on these theories already. Hopefully your friend will take it seriously. So many reasons to give up empty carbs.

WOW 😮 I agree with madfoxmade...patients have a tendency to not believe in the truth.

I wish a doctor would do that with my mother. she eats candy all day and then complains about all her rampant debilitating health problems and how she could never lose weight no matter how hard she tries.

Not a doctor but I understand his/her frustration. Who wants to help somebody who refuses to help themselves? My FIL had Type 2 and didn’t follow doctors orders either, because he was smarter than the doctor. Ended up on dialysis and now he’s in an urn.

Livoo1– The medical community has been aware of the need to cut carbs via processed, fast foods and lil debbies for a long time. You just can’t make people do it. We are hooked on the fadt and easy way of life. Women bear the brunt of this because they are full time workers, raise kids cook meals etc. Hard to do it all and still be the sexy wife and soccer mom.

I know about the carbs but it was the dementia link that struck me as interesting

Wow. I can't think of many reasons more urgent than diabetes 2 to lose weight and eat healthy. I was just thinking today how physical and mental health go hand in hand.

I lost my dad real young (I was 31, he wasn't even 60) because he wouldn't stop sneaking mountain dew and chips and candy bars. I hate cutting carbs...I LOVE CARBS but I am getting used to "good" carbs lol...he would have been okay if he had switched out even as much as I have...stop with the soda and drink juice, stop the candy and replace it with fruit and veggies, but he just didn't see the point and so I lost my 2nd dad when I was 31, I lost the 1st one when I was 15. I went through 2 in a shorter time than most people have 1. Maybe she just needs to hear that her kids are going to lose her...or if she's like me and thinks...I have them set, maybe she needs to be reminded that her friends don't want to lose her. I know it hit me real hard when I realized that I was losing friends while I was still living because she didn't think she could handle me dying when we were so close. You never know what might make her think twice about what she's doing. I know that I just didn't care about myself, maybe that's where she is, maybe she doesn't care if she dies...sad to think about but...I can see her point. What's the use of living longer when you feel so crappy.

how about a cardiac rehab program? surely one of her doctors must've thought of this, i hope. Especially if she's had a heart attack they will help her with an exercise program and monitor her while doing it. Effects: stronger heart and weight loss.

SuTH— her heart attack was a number of years ago so she doesn’t need cardiac rehab at this time. What she needs now besides a swift kick in the butt is to grow up, suck it up and do what needs to be done— or not. Her decision, her consequences.

That reference to diabetes as being Diabetes T3 is being seen more and more often in the medical community. I don’t know that they are willing to commit to diabetes as the only cause but the theory sure makes sense.

Heart wrenching. I’m almost in tears as my own hubby is on a bad road with t2d as well. I try so hard but it’s in vain. Hi truly fear his future. 😢

I’m very sorry wifey— it is such a helpless feeling. I have lost 6 friends/acquaintances in the last year from T2 diabetes related issues . It just blows me away and it is sooo painful to see it all unfolding and not be able to change the course of events.. The sad thing is that I still have another 5 or 6 to go . For those who read this and have spouses that are either in denial over their situation or just stubborn— do what you can do before they become too ill to make sure they have adequate life insurance so that your future is a little more secure. Cruel. Non sympathetic or non supportive. Yep that would be right. Check on life insurance policy situation.

Katie71. — keep moving ahead you don’t want others to deal with the same pain you dealt with. Stop this generational illness with you. You can do this.

Pixie— you are so correct. Physical health and mental health walk down life’s road hand in hand.
