"Can one binge make you fat?"

"Think of the last time you ate a big meal then weighed yourself the next day. Perhaps it was Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s, and your scale showed a gain of several pounds. But how much of that is fat?

Very little, it turns out.

There are about 9 food calories in a gram of fat, so in theory you could gain one pound of fat (454 g) by eating some 4,000 calories more than you burn. The actual number may be closer to 3,500,[1] so if you eat 500 extra calories per day for a week, you might gain a pound of fat.

But not if you eat 3,500 calories in a single meal. There’s a limit as to how much food your body can turn into fat in just a few hours. What your body cannot process for storage during that time, it tries to burn (your temperature rises slightly) and to excrete (you end fighting with your family for access to the toilets).

And of course, digestion itself has an energy cost."

"While regular overeating leads to fat gain, a lot of the weight you gain from just one binge will simply be water, especially if your starting glycogen stores are low and your food rich in carbs."

Nice information!

It is interesting, I'm still reading, but I had to stop and laugh a second. Such a formal article full of science and acronyms and then all of a sudden they used the word 'poop'. LOL. Okay, back to the seriousness. I've heard and read that the occasional binge can sometimes boost metabolism as long as the person returns to a deficit. Your thoughts?

Well, shhhhhooot. I was enjoying this information until I got to the end and they offered magic at a cost.

Wow.. I was going to tease you that your arm looked swollen but after Fatso commented I didn't want to be confused with the troll. Is this just one of the easier sites to join and be a jerk?

One bing want make you gain a ton but it’s that one time that might end you back up on the wrong path. That mentality is not good. Until we realize over eating is what got us where we are, and determine to make it a priority to not bing we will slowly head back to the bing cycle. Watch fit trim people that have been that way for years. Most don’t bing ever. Their are exceptions, but we aren’t one of them or we would not be over weight.

Bonnie... I see where you’re coming from, but it’s important not to be afraid of food or holiday eating or eating out. I think the bigger issue is not the binge, but the lifestyle of eating the cheeseburger fries and coke, eating 4 pieces of pizza or a mondo burrito and think it’s normal eating. My aha is that I know the calories in my food and that regulates what I eat. I haven’t been over 3000 calories in the last 3 months (that I know of) and I’ve been very calorie conscious for the last year. I’m almost at the year point of watching my input and output and have adopted this lifestyle.

I have never, ever binged. Have I overeaten, yes (Christmas, Thanksgiving) but that full overbloated feeling literally makes me sick so it happens very rarely. The word binge eating actually has a definition and a criteria as a mental health diagnosis. Not a good thing for anyone.

Well said Love2. My aha is teaching myself to eat to satisfy hunger is not the same as eating to feel full. It hasn't been instantaneous by any means. But the more I do it, stop eating before feeling 'full' it helps me. Whenever I make it all about the calories I'll overeat just 'because I can'. Then when encountering that high calorie feast dinner I'm taking in too many calories because I'm accustomed to the feel of it.

D. thank you for sharing this. I do know this, but it came as a well-timed reminder. Thank you!

Keyten, if you look down on the comments, D. was referring to going to sleep. 😴😁 I thought the same thing until I scrolled through the comments.

You know, @Keyten, your comment reminded me of a movie I watched the other day titled "Disfigured" - it was about an unlikely partnership between an anorexic and an overweight woman. Fairly shallow though - I don't think it really touched on the issues leading to either disorder. So then I did a search for anorexia and 'America's Top Model' came up in the filter. Now, that's telling right there.

And I agree. I don't know if Chris knows something we don't but even though we have totally different Woe's and Agenda's I follow Diablo constantly for the information and logic he shares. I hope Chris is joking.

Oh wait! That was on another one of Diablo's post. I might be wrong!

You are such a trouble maker! 😜

I see a lot of people get very upset after a holiday or going out to eat and thinking their 1.5 lb gain, or 5lb gain the next morning is actually fat and this throws them off track and makes them want to be more restrictive and believe they can’t eat anything. I do get nervous when I see the scale go up, but I try to remember these principles. I was up 5lbs after my bday weekend, but a week later I’m back to my original weight.

@Keyten - I can't argue those stats at all based on my personal experience. That's why I'd accept all the appetite suppressants in the world wouldn't help a person with BED. And why even though I'm here AGAIN trying AGAIN and working on healing this disorder AGAIN I wonder if it will last. I wish I could have a lobotomy that erases that part of my brain.
