Friday - February 1st

Last night I didn't get to sleep at all, no, no. The sleeping pill I took was just a waste of time. I couldn't close my eyes 'cause you were on my mind - The Fifth Dimension

I’ve heard and lamely sang along with this song for decades but it wasn’t until about 3am this morning I decided they were singing about food. Sure, in the second stanza they allude to making a phone call but I suspect it was for pizza delivery.
After several tortured hours of tossing and turning and kicking the mattress and pacing I recognized I was feeling hungry but I was determined to stay on track to stop the night snacking. I’d eaten an 8 oz grilled salmon for dinner. I ‘should not’ have been hungry.
I went through the usual steps. ‘Maybe your body is thirsty’ so I drank two bottles of water. In the next hour I followed up with hot lemon water. At 4am I decided to go ahead and have a bulletproof coffee. Finally around 6am I managed to squeeze in about an hour of sleep. Now I’m sitting here hoping I hold out for the day and am recording my meals in advance to avoid overeating by blaming exhaustion.
I’ve read this keto WOE should bring about some mental clarity. Goodness, do I ever hope so. Last night I picked up a few things at the Grocery for Superbowl Sunday. Deli sliced turkey and cheese to make lettuce wraps, olives, avocado, and summer sausage. Fortunately my friend Yoga is a low carb eater.
So then I entered the items into FS just to get the macros and I guess my contact lenses had completely dried up because I had to squelch a screech when I ‘thought’ I read: 3 slices Deli Sliced Turkey = 35 carbs.
I nearly lost my mind! Seriously. Therefore, during the insomniac insanity I repeatedly thought ‘how did I miss that? Turkey? Carbs? Black is white, up is down and lean meat is carb heavy?’
In the light of day I discovered I was wrong. Whew. Thank goodness I’d fought the urge to throw it in the trash last night.
Ah well. Live and learn. Hopefully I’ll get some decent sleep tonight.

PS: I think the activity recording section needs a 'tossing & turning' category. I can practically bench press a king sized bed.

If you are doing keto, increase your healthy fats and you will start tp feel less hungry. The fats satiate us...not just the protein.

I thought those lyrics sounded familiar!

I am legally blind without my glasses and used to wear contacts. Once, in my single days, during the disco era, I came home at 1:00 a.m. from a Friday night "social" at a favorite watering hole. I'm no good after midnight, or after two glasses of chablis, and the combination was deadly. I just fell into bed, unconscious. Not drunk, mind you. Just unconscious. I woke up the next morning and wandered into the bathroom, the door open to the kitchen in my little apartment. SUDDENLY, I realized that I could SEE the half-inch high fleur-de-lis print in my kitchen, a good 15 feet away! "I CAN SEE! I CAN SEE!" zipped through my brain like a comet, a positively *mystical* experience! ... Until ... "YOU IDIOT! YOU STILL HAVE YOUR CONTACTS IN!" Oh, man ... but for one brief shining moment, I knew what it felt like to "take the waters at Lourdes" and be cured! [sigh. still need to visit Lourdes...]

You're lucky... If I fall asleep with my contacts in they dry out so bad they almost have to be sand blasted off my eyes.

Bella, does your sleeping pill have Benadryl? For some, like me, it keeps me awake..as does melatonin. I find some hot cereal with milk works better than anything. Like oatmeal or the flaked millet I use (from the north African store). Not sleeping is the worst!!!

That's interesting about Benadryl (diphenhydramine) causing sleeplessness. It never makes me sleepy!

No Benadryl... Anything with diphenhydramine makes me mad as a hatter. I'm hoping for a restful sleep tonight.

Don't use Diphenhydramine! It is linked to early onset of dementia - it's in Benadryl, Zzquil, and night time cold medicines!!! A 3 mg Melatonin is just as effective and much safer.

Hope you had a good sleep. I don't know if it is relevant at all but have you heard about the DaWN phenomenon. You can read about it here https://blog.virtahealth.com/dawn-phenomenon/

Well the positive is I slept really really well last night. The negative is I consumed nearly double my RDI. I conclude in attempt to get my fat ratio up I drank too many calories in the bulletproof coffee. Anther day you get this fine tuned.

Insomnia is common when going into ketosis. If you’re struggling with going to sleep try a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup. It will help you sleep.

But will it help you stay in ketosis?
02 Feb 19 by member: liv001
That same question came to mind too!

Honey has about 17g carbohydrate and 60 calories per tablespoon. A teaspoonful might help you sleep and allow us to stay in ketosis, but we need to log it (5.67g of carbohydrate, no fiber, and 20 calories).

Just one lick would throw me out of ketosis. Just poor sugar. I accidently had one zip of sugared coffee a couple weeks ago and that was that

Do you test with strips? Blood or urine.. Or both?
03 Feb 19 by member: FullaBella
I just go by feel. I can tell as soon as I feel my brain getting the glucose and then my cells bloat (i can tell on my fingers)

Liv and futurebella, the honey will delay ketosis. The insomnia comes from not being in ketosis yet, because the body is producing adrenaline. The sugar tells the body it’s safe to relax. It will take longer to get into ketosis this way, but it will help you sleep. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who is already in ketosis, because there are other things going on. I also wouldn’t recommend anyone do it for more than a night or two.

I've ordered a monitor for ketosis - blood and urine strips, just to understand if I'm in it or not. Last night seemed sleepless but I finally managed to drink some sleepy time tea, turn the air on (sorry my northern friends... it's in the 70's here!) and finally just said prayers that if I was meant to sleep I would... if not I wouldn't. I got in about six-seven hours. Happy.
