Kenna Morton's Journal, 29 Jan 19

Day #1 of my 3 day obesity conference:
1. Worldwide, almost 2 billion adults are overweight—600 million are in the obese category.
2. That is 40% of all adults in the world are overweight and 13% are obese.
3. The United States of America is the worst nation in the world in terms of our obesity statistics.
4. 69% of all adult Americans are overweight and 35% are in the obese category.
5. Over 17% of all children in the United States are obese.
6. The worst states are Arkansas, West Virginia and Mississippi.
7. ALL of the states have an obesity rate greater than 20%.

A very discouraging way to start my day. Come on everyone — beat the statistics!!!

I think the solutions are known— fight the battle and win. I think the real answer is to take those crucial steps to help the kids of today learn and live better habits so they won’t have to go through what so many here are dealing with. Not sure how that “do as i say not what I do’ approach will work. Plus, so much of the issue of obesity is realated not just to loving food and overeating but the emotional issues behind it. I’ll post as I go along if anything new and earth shattering is presented.

It is why it drives me crazy when people say they have to have 'junk' food in their cupboards for the kids. Or their kids don't need to eat the vegetables and other good healthy foods because they don't 'like' them. I know that isn't true. My grandkids do not care for candy. They buy it (or are offered it), suck on it and spit it out saying they don't care for it. They are 10 and 13 years old. This has been going on since they were babies. Yayy!

I think the affordability and availability of whole foods is something that must be addressed. Affordable groceries are just not easily available to some folks. I don't think its the entire story but it is part of the story. I also wish they would discuss the marketing of trash food to children.

@floridaga2000, the scarcity of supermarkets in "food desserts" may become less of a problem as online grocery shopping (including for fresh food) and home delivery (even automated!) become more widely available and less expensive. The world seems to get more interesting all the time!
