Okay, folks... The Fourth of July is coming up and it's the biggest backyard BBQ-let's-drink-and-eat-chips day of the year. I know we all have all the willpower in the world, but the reality is that many of us are going to be in situations where there will be tasty delicious food all around us. I plan to bring along a cabbage/ramen salad that I love and fits within my RDI which will be one way to avoid the mayo-drenched creamy potato salad. I'm not objecting to sampling yummy things, but I've worked so darn hard to get this first ten pounds off that I don't want to blow it on "just one day".

I'd like to hear some of your strategies for enjoying the day without busting the progress you've made.

We will probably do a BBQ(doesn't seem right not to!). I am wanting to do Kabobs this year, we have never done them and I think it would be a great time to try them.

I focus on the undeniable fact that I will never regret NOT eating food that isn't good for me. I am in complete control over what I put into my body.

It is the perfect day to experiment with healthy, low cal BBQ alternatives. Another alternative is eat smaller portions and schedule family activities than can burn calories. My family usually go disc golfing to work off some calories and laugh at each other as we throw discs into trees. BTW, try this salmon burger: https://www.thedailymeal.com/recipes/chipotle-salmon-burgers-0-recipe

Fitting in fun is key, I think. I'm going to be at someone else's house, so I don't know what activities are planned. Maybe I should bring over some badminton rackets and a few birdies.

We are allowed our transgressions! Otherwise what is life for. Just reduce your cal load a little for a few days ahead of it. Then you can do what you like relax and enjoy the day without any guilt

We can try eating a guilt-free meal before we go anywhere so we are not as famish or tempted. It is difficult though with all the wonderful smells!

I agree, FADY7777.

I'm going to a dinner friday, I asked for the meal plan so I can tweak it to make it keto. When I told them why they were more than happy to make accommodations for me by making cauliflower rice and keeping sauce/veggies/pasta separate so we can all build our own dish

I’ve lowered my calorie and carb intake to allow me to have a very small portion of potato salad, baked beans and a smoked chicken leg. When I say small portion; I mean one table spoon of each side dish. Lots of water before I eat so I won’t be tempted to overeat. Also I plan to not go hungry and be sure to get my substantial nutrients before hand.

I’m going to stuff my face with meat and drink some beer! I will still keep it low carb, but have a good time.

The last person and her daughter that I worked with on their lifestyle change issues started their journey around Halloween and had to get through Thanksgiving and Christmas. My advice to them was to not go to the event hungry, bring something that they could safely eat if they got overwhelmed. Otherwise, I suggested that they survey the choices available , make a couple good choices but to by all means use their newly acquired portion control skills to eat a few of the things that were their very favorites and that included a desert. Then the two of them, mother and 8 year old daughter , pulled a group together to take a walk. They did not loose any weight but they also did not gain any weight. Most importantly they learned that they could do it despite many family members that tried to sabotage them. Mom lost 175 lb in one year and the little girl, now almost 13 just completed running her first marathon — 26 miles . Mom ran the half marathon. In their minds, they never dieted. There were no forbidden foods and they ate the same foods everyone else did. It has been just about four years now and no weight gain.

And— mom got married yesterday to a great guy that shares their lifestyle and WOE. They met at one of the 5 ks that they did.

Honestly on days like these I try to consume protein n I try to stay away from carbs (unless it’s from fruit)

I avoid those delicious 🤤 Mayo salads too

I take a 3-bite serving of everything that looks good. Then only go back for anything that is excellent tasting. I don't eat white potatoes, white rice, corn, or anything with onions so it's easy to avoid a lot of carbs.

Kenna has the same point of view I do. There will be several people there who will be motivated to walk with me as well as other folks who will be bringing traditional (caloric) sides and salads. A downfall for me is cookies - I love, love, love them, but the sugar and flour negatively affect my joints. Remembering how I feel after I eat them is a huge motivator to seek out other delicious things to eat. And as I said before: I'm down 10 pounds and it took me just over a month to do it. Why sabotage myself? I'm an adult; I can make good choices. A spoonful is just as delicious as a cup full.
