erikahollister's Journal, 03 Oct 16

So, I went to see my Integrated Medicine Doctor last week. I complained about slow weight loss and poor sleep. Of course, he confirmed that insomnia often leads to weight gain or slow loss due to cortisol and other hormones. I prescribed some supplements to address the insomnia, all of which I've tried before, with positive, but tepid results. But this time, he said to take them together as they work synergistically. And voila - really good results! They are: melatonin with 5HTP (that I get at Trader Joe's), magnesium glycinate and Kavinace (a gaba formulation). I still wake up at 2:30 AM, but I just take another dose, and -hallelujah!- I fall asleep again for another 3 hours or more. After months and years of short sleep, this feels positively luxurious. And weight has started to drop now with every good night of sleep. Yay!

My mother swears by magnesium - good to know it helped you!

@ Kathleen - my doc mentioned that melatonin only affects people who are deficient. It your body is making what it needs, the supplement won't do anything for you. So, maybe that means that you just don't need it.

Wow! I'll have to give these a try. I've been having sleep issues for years (since i started on St. John's wort for my depression) but before that i used to sleep way too much like all the time so i just figured my body was evening itself out. I've been using Valerian which also helps with anxiety but i can't take it every night or i'll be way too drowsy the next day and then it will just stop working.

I got adivsed to take methyl-B12, Folinic acid and melatonin for my anxiety. Apparently I don't process B vitamins well, so I benefit from the melatonin and B supplements. The biochemical pathway for B12, Folinate and melatonin are closely connected to enable your nerve endings to restore during sleep and reduce anxiety (see MTHFR gene). It also helps weight loss.

Do you have any tiredness when you wake up?

No, that doesn't seem to be a problem. I've had several great night's sleep on this combo, but last night another bad one. So, who knows about the longer term effectiveness. I didn't exercise yesterday, then watch the debate -- a bad combo for a restful night!
