Woohoo! It's troll free Tuesday! We can post what we want without being flamed!

Low carb baking is on my mind lately with two birthdays next month and then the holidays coming up. I found a great website @ ditchthecarbs dot com and bookmarked a few things I want to try. While browsing the site and reading testimonials, I came across an entry written by a woman who could not lose weight on LCHF. After 20 lb, she stalled.

A helpful reader directed her to Dr. Jason Fung's blog, intensivedietarymanagement dot com. His August 7, 2015 entry titled "Why Can't I Lose Weight?" was enlightening. I was reading wide eyed how raised insulin levels from medications or stress factor in to the weight loss equation.

Cortisol levels are raised by stress, chronic pain syndrome, and sleep deprivation. Cortisol actually raises blood glucose and therefore insulin, causing weight gain. Our friends here on fs who share their frustrations about weight loss stalls are scrutinized in terms of CICO or macros, but perhaps they need a different kind of help.

It's something to keep in mind.

Great post Lady. I seem stalled right now but I only sleep for about 6 hrs. a night. I've always been a poor sleeper going back to my thirties so that might have something to do with it. I usually sleep better in the fall as the mornings stay darker longer so it will be interesting to see what happens then.

That's a great blog, Lady. She's got a "Sugar-free September Challenge" going on her Fb page. I joined, although it's not so much of a challenge for me. LOL That article on IDM is an eye-opener, isn't it?

With you on the sleep thing. I went into a tail spin with sleep over the past year and my doc really pins part of my dramatic weight gain over that period to getting less than 6 hrs/ nite. Of course, the rise in cortisol is only one of many factors - the major one being diet ( by far!) I think that healthy weight maintenance is probably about some magical balance of good nutrition, adequate rest, regular physical activity, supportive interpersonal relationships - in short - a healthy lifestyle. As for me, I'm still working at that balance thing!

Kes, God bless Dr. Fung and his lifesaving work. Insomnia is horrible. I suffer with it occasionally, most recently after I drastically reduced the carbs and started fasting. Blood sugar crashes after carb binges used to put me right out. Waking in the middle of the night and failing to get back to sleep seemed to part of my new normal until my physician prescribed magnesium supplements. Now, I get up once in the night to pee, then right back to sleep. I'm lucky my solution was so simple. I'm also fortunate to finally be able to afford good medical care.

Calories don't mean anything to the body, it's all about controlling insulin. People that don't have weight issues related to insulin have their heads in the sand and aren't worth wasting the effort to correct.

Good tip about the mag. supplement! I go in phases with sleep...and it seems to be tied to whether of not the TV was on or not before I went to bed.

I tend to fall asleep to the TV, don't like being alone here. I've started trying to remember to set a timer on the TV to turn itself off after I will have fallen asleep. It does seem to make a difference with better quality/more refreshing sleep.

I have a fitness band that would give helpful tips for better sleep on the app. There was a breathing one that my 7 year old really liked, she would make us do it together after reading her a story for bed. My fav. was the bedtime yoga stretches and we also both like the Soundcloud Meditation for Better Sleep that it recommended. Plus knowing what my sleep was like was helpful as well. I was able to improve my sleep so much, I went from getting 2 to 4 hours almost nightly to getting 7 to 8.5 hours regularly.

Is that a thing now? I feel like I've missed a lot. Lol! Thanks for the post. Meds do mess with weight loss. Both directions.

Yes, I've been watching my weight loss get scuttled by stress. It's a pretty direct connection. Last year when my husband had his bad car accident and we didn't know whether he'd make it out of the ICU alive, I gained 10 lbs and was hardly eating anything. It was not important to me at the time, just notable. And my major weight gains have been during periods of unhappiness and depression. Leptin, grehlin, cortisol are all hormones that they are really now just learning about. These all affect weight and appetite and the research is still young.

For lower carb birthday desserts, consider a couple of things: 1) Baked chocolate custards -- I have a great recipe for these that you can make with half & half, very dark/bittersweet chocolate and not really very much sugar. Let me know if you want the recipe. 2) Oatmeal & nut fruit crumble -- this gluten free recipe has the added advantage of being lower carb higher fiber because it's based on oatmeal not white flour and has very little sugar. 3) Oat flour banana bread -- I make this with cark chocolate chips, so it's lower carb. I don't think there's any way to do really low-carb baking unless you use artificial sweeteners, which I can't do. But I have found that these few recipes are very reliable and much lower in carbs than most baked goods. Good luck.

Falling asleep in front of the tube is one of life's simple pleasures. The infomercials always wake me up, though. I checked out ibreatheimhungry dot com. Cream cheese pancakes FTW ☺ Erika, you probably weren't getting much sleep, either. Gaining ten pounds with very little food supports 1point21's assertion that it's not about calories, but about regulating insulin. Barb, FS cleans the boards on Monday, and we get to enjoy a respite Tuesday ☺
