HCB's Journal, 15 Jul 15

Greetings my Buddies:

It seems I have many thoughts in my mind today...

I am constantly surprised at the impatience I frequently observe with people and their weight loss journeys.

I lately have seen people post how they want to lose "this much weight before this date and time" - and then I see it may be quite an UNREALISTIC goal or timeframe in which they want to lose weight.

IS it self-sabotage? IS it a lack of healthy goals? IS it optimism?
What happens if they fall short of their goal? Do they quit and feel like they failed?

Reasonable goals over a long term make much sense to me - we are striving for a healthy lifestyle - not just temporary "diet". We want to be able to sustain our way of eating and exercising for life.

Does it make sense?

Words of the Week:
"True success is when you no longer ask What if...?"

I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

I also recognized this in many people. I do agree with what you are saying just from my own life experience. I am not on a diet..I have changed my eating habits. As I lose more weight i am experiencing slower weightless.. However because its a life change not a diet i know it will come off on its own time and date 😉

I know what I want and what will happen are not necessarily the same thing. I am a realist with a dash of hopeful optimism thrown in. LOL What I want to be at 200 lbs by my birthday 8/12 (under a month) may not happen. But I use it as something to aim for and even if I falter or fall short getting there, but I like goals be they ambitious or not. Been there a dozen times with the renovation. Alot did not happen as I had hoped but they still have or are happening. I try not to be discouraged and I know where my limits are in any case. Do I think I will make it to that goal in that amount of time... Unlikely but darn if I am not gonna at least try. My proverbial carrot in front of my mule. Giddy-up!

I agree. I am trying for smaller goals with no time frame in mind, just absolutely changing the way and how much I eat.

This is a lifestyle change and I am in it for the long haul. I intend to implement more changes once my house is in order and functional again. And I have gotten past the 6 day convention n September. I will join the local fitness center that is part of the HS I just learned was open to the community. But I have too much on my plate to justify the expense until I have the time to commit.

Well said......eating healthy is a life style!

Hmmm. Well, I'd rather see people aim high than come here and spin their wheels. I've been on F.S. for 6.5 months now and have lost 70 lbs; some members have only lost 5 pounds in that same time period, yet continue to post woe-is-me entries. So: over-the-top, enthusiastic entries OR those who obviously don't want to cut portion sizes, give up donuts and make changes to their overweight lifestyle? Give me the former, not the latter.

In the past I've written PM's and asked them not to set themselves up for failure by setting ridiculous goals. They either have a wedding to go to or want to celebrate a birthday being thinner. Telling them it took time to gain and it will take time to lose it is what they don't want to hear and swear they'll hit their goals. Nothing wrong with wanting to lose 50-100 lbs. Many disappear.

LOL - Soonsoonsoon - Yes! THAT is a common theme as well. "I want to lose weight without making any lifestyle changes that may be required." We all need balance, right?

They're the same ones who post recipes for cakes & pies. No wonder they haven't lost weight. They don't want to substitute fresh fruit for desserts, or better yet, save desserts for only special occasions (maybe 10 times a year, NOT 10 times a month).

Soonsoonsoon! LOL

Well said SOONSOONSOON! :D We all have our downfalls. Ones woes is not always anothers woes but as long as changes for the better are happening let each of us learn & go at our own pace. Getting there is what matters & without learning along the way(insert here-setting unrealistic goals or not wanting to give up what one isnt ready to give up YET) is one way in which that is done. Its the JOURNEY not the DESTINATION that will teach us HOW to KEEP the weight off. :D

I have noticed that FS users who post... I need to lose XX pounds very fast... usually don't last on this site very long. Weight loss is like climbing a mountain. We all have the option of taking a slow winding road that is safe and much easier. While others try a very slippery slope and wind up much lower on the foothills than they started.

MyawethinTICself: 5 pounds in 6 months is NOT "slow weight loss at a steady pace with positive lifestyle changes": it is a bowel movement.

That's funny and true SSS.

Regardless of the time frame it took to lose the weight, there was a weight loss! THAT is what *I* am saying. Focusing on *whatever* positive change is made in my opinion is far more helpful to getting to ones goals. Its a *lifestyle*change. No 2 people are alike. Some take longer than others to learn whats needed & to make those changes. To make it a lifestyle & not just a diet it requires a whole new way of THINKING,without the new thinking process in place people will continue to revert back to old ways.

well said... there is no set way to loose this much b y that time.... you just need to take it one day at a time, work your program, be honest with your self and absolutely, it has to be a life style change not a 'diet" or it wont, and i can attest to that from personal exp.

Much truth spoken here. And the weight loss isn't/shouldn't be the only goal. I've been improving health, going through menopause and (very) slowly losing weight. All of those things take time, patience, perseverance and a bit of self-love to get you through this journey. I’ve been here for a couple of years and seen many people come and go, and a few who have reach tremendous goals. I am always reminding myself that their journey is not mine and I can’t compare them. Otherwise I’d have given up a long time ago.
