Sandy701's Journal, 14 Jun 11

Walked an exhausting 3.3 miles today; exhausting due to the heat, not the distance. It was 87 when I went out, a bit later than I'd like, and I almost scrubbed the walk. But my doggies were all hyper, eagerly awaiting their leashes - they KNOW the routine! So, I went ahead and took them for slightly less than a mile.

When I got them back home and went out by myself, it was 88, full sun, and little breeze. I made the mistake of walking the lake route....Note to self: If it's later, the lake route is in FULL SUN and it's HOT!!! I seriously thought I'd need to stop in the shade somewhere.

When I got home, I just went into the pool, clothes and all, as I had to find some way to get cooled off - NOW! It was 94 degrees.

Well, lesson learned. I DO have a heat limit, it appears. Like it or not, I'll need to get up earlier, as the overnight lows are forecasted to be only mid- to upper 70's for the next few days....that's as good as it will get and the temps will only go higher with each passing hour.

I'm battling the nut butters again, last night and this AM. I know I shouldn't eat them but I'm doing it anyway, so I've got to look a bit deeper.

Could I be feeling deprived? DH passed his PT test last Friday and began to eat on a calorie-counting regimen rather than Atkins. Bakery rolls, cereal, milk, fruit, etc. are all in the kitchen now. There was a time last summer when I was on Atkins and he wasn't, and it wasn't that big a deal, as I remember (except for the chocolate chip cookies he baked one time). But because I've stayed on plan now, could I be feeling deprived seeing him eating all the "good" stuff?

Maybe deep down, I still feel that Atkins is a diet and diets mean deprivation. I had thought I was comfortable with Atkins' foods and feeling that they're quite "normal," but perhaps I still don't quite believe it? Not sure.

But for the rest of today, I'll again commit to no nut butters and no peanuts.

Focus.

This is MY journey and outside events and other people have no power to derail me unless I give them that power.

Sandy - Sorry to hear you are still struggling. At least nuts are good for you - it could be cookies you are craving. Besides, you have the sense to try to figure out what is making you lose focus - and I'm sure you will. I'll be back tomorrow to check on that last pound. If not tomorrow, then next Wednesday. We can do this.

Hey Sandy, it very hard when there are others eating the foods that are not for us...I made banana pudding for my husband and it will be easy for me not to eat it as I am lactose intolerant. So I try to keep him happy while I try something else that I can eat..Not Easy!!! So Sorry your still struggling so hard..I am sure the heat is zapping you of your energy and focus as well...Have a good evening....Bren

Sandy - Amen! Only you have the power to keep you on track! I think everyone has their own version of nuts, whatever it is, it is hard to resist. I struggle too, some days I win, some days not so much. Life is a journey, each on our own, but as they intertwine we get to help each other as best we can. So, not that I have anything really smart to say, (wish I did), I did want to share what I try to do (sometimes it works, sometimes not). For the most part I try to stick with the just for today plan, when that is in danger I try to go with something off my safe list. Sometimes I just need a something to munch on, crunch on whatever. Sorry you are struggling so, I hope this helps!

Thanks BuffyBear. You're right...if not this Wednesday, then next Wednesday. It IS going to happen.

Bren, you might be right, as this heat just really does a number on me! I find it hard to summon up the energy to anything else but sit in front of this computer screen! LOL! I just thought these kind of craving struggles were behind me, but I guess I'm not immune, even after a year. Have a good evening.

Thanks Coach. Loved that joke of yours on Stef's journal about the guy answering the phone, thinking the caller was asking him about the weather. ROFL!!!!

GG-Girl...you've reminded me of something that I think was on the Protein Power plan I was on years ago...something like a safe list. Basically, you had to eat your way up/down a list of foods before you could eat the problematic food. So, by the time I would get to nut butters (not as far up/down the list as some foods, like cake), I'd first have to eat maybe a salad, then a boiled egg, then a serving of lean meat, etc. Of course the idea is that before you get to the problem food, you'd probably have stopped, getting full on other on-plan foods. Something fast and, ideally, crunchy would be perfect. Hope your day is still going great.

I agree with your above strategy! Try to discover the taste you are looking for, salty, smooth, crunchy, etc. before eating and I think it will be more satisfying. I also try to tell myself that I can have whatever food I want whenever I want it, there's never going to be shortage of it, no one is going to rip it out of my hands, I won't be arrested if I don't eat it right this minute, what's my rush? I know this sounds silly, but it works for me. Take care Sandy!!!

Sandy you are doing so well. I don't know that I wouldn't feel the urge to eat if hubby was eating that stuff in front of me after not being around it for a while. I sure know what you mean about walking in the heat! I go around 7:30 or 8:00 in the evening for just that reason. By then my route is almost all shady. And I have also jumped in the pool clothes and all on more than one occasion! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Ok I know I'm not an Atkins expert or anything so I rarely offer advice but I've found that certain foods kill my cravings. For instance if I'm craving something sweet I can eat green olives and it kills the craving. Another friend of mine can eat pickles and it does the same thing. Ok I might just be strange but it works for me. lol

Lisa, that's not a bad idea to try to delay the food for a bit of time. Might be worth trying...thanks!

Stef, you've got a great routine going there in the evening, eating dinner later, as well. I wish I could do that but by the time evening rolls around, I can conjure up excuse after excuse why I can't exercise then (i.e. too tired, good show on TV, I'll go tomorrow, getting dark, bugs coming out, etc.) LOL! You must have great commitment to go in the evening! Enjoy your Wednesday, too!

Liltatgirl...I'll have to start paying attention to see if I can find any craving-killer foods. That might be just what I need....thanks!
