2ManyCurves's Journal, 23 Dec 13

Decent drop this week, especially considering I don't feel that I worked out as much or as hard as I generally go at it. What I am noticing is that I will usually have a somewhat large drop and it will then be followed by a negligible drop the next week. I am doing the IF 5:2 and I do believe it is working. I noticed that if I work out during that 24 hour fast period, I seem to be tapping into fat reserves as my smart scale does indicate a fat loss with increased water percentage (which is good). I am going to eat reasonable today. Tomorrow will be a cheat day (still within reason). I believe I will do a fast from tomorrow afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. Thursday, Friday and Saturday (until around noon) will be normal days. Then, I will fast again from Saturday at noon until Sunday at noon. We should be boarding the cruise ship on Sunday at noon. I should probably pick one day during the cruise to fast as well. Cruise week, I am not anticipating any loss at all. In fact, I fully expect that I may be up a pound or two. But, at worst, I am going to look at it as resetting my metabolism. I'm also looking forward to a LOT of strength training and fitness classes on the cruise. I don't have a gym nearby me, so having access to one on the cruise appeals to me more than the Lido Deck. Surviving Thanksgiving and Christmas have so far been fairly easy. My biggest challenge is going to be surviving the feeding fest on the cruise. Both my husband and I will turn 39 on the cruise. I am praying my mother doesn't not buy us one of those cruise ship birthday cakes. She did that last year. It was a sweet gesture, but frankly, the taste of the cake wasn't worth the calories. Yet, I felt compelled to eat it so that I didn't hurt her feelings. My plan to survive the cruise is to select foods that I don't have access to at home and foods that I really, really want to try. In other words, there really is no need for room service at 3am to deliver me a grilled cheese sandwich. And, cruise ship pizza is not even as good as I make it at home. In fact, most of the offerings at lunchtime are foods that I can prepare better at home or that simply don't appeal to me. I'm not blowing what I've done so far by eating hotdogs, french fries or stir fry at lunch. Mostly I think I will skip lunches and eat a small portion for breakfast if I am hungry in the mornings. I have a similar opinion of breakfasts. I am going to try to work out in the mornings to take advantage of the fasting burn. Dinner will be the time that I consume the bulk of my caloric intake. Dessert will likely be my weakness. And, if it is a dessert I really, really love, I'm eating it. So we meet again, Tiramisu.

Here is the good news: I wanted to be under 190 before December 31st. I actually achieved it several days ago. But, I only do an official weigh in on Monday mornings. One scale puts me at 187.0 and the other has me at 188.8. I took the larger number. Now, my running has really taken a downturn this past week. I didn't run as often as I generally do. And, I noticed yesterday that about a mile and a half into it, I got a foot cramp just behind the arch of my left foot and right before the heel. That same leg has had some tibial soreness too. I don't think I have shin splints. And, I've certainly rested it quite a bit this week. But, I just found that my left leg and foot made running unpleasant yesterday. I am slower as well. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever build up my speed and endurance enough to accomplish a marathon. I am registered for a half in May. And, I just do not feel ready at all. I am really going to have to step it up if I want to survive the half without ending up crippled. I'm also experiencing a good bit of pain in both hip joints. I run outside in a rural area with a ton of hills. I thought perhaps I was experiencing some bursitis. During the run itself, I don't notice it as much. But by night, lying in bed can be annoying as both hips feel very sore. This getting old stuff is for the birds. I know that reducing my weight is going to take a lot of pressure off my joints. Perhaps that is part of the reason I have subconsciously reduced the amount of running I typically do in a week. I wonder if I am going to experience the same skeletal/structural issues in running when I am 150 pounds...or goal of 135. I sure hope not. These races keep the healthy lifestyle momentum going with every new medal, tshirt and bag of goodies.

Ok. Two days of work this week. Today and Thursday is all I have to make it through. Hope all of you on FS have a wonderful Christmas.

I went on a 11 day cruise a month ago and I did gain 3 lbs. I finally gave into the desserts on or about day 4. I didnt find it too hard to pass up most of the breakfast or lunch foods, but the dinner in the main dining room at night was wonderful!I think eating later than usual also added to the gain. Im sure those 4 bottles of wine didnt help either. When I got home I jumped back on the wt. loss horse and within a week was back to my wt. Have fun on the cruise and Happy Birthday!

Thank you! I'm not a big drinker, so I will likely skip a lot of the wine. But, I know I will give in to the desserts. We have the "eat when you want" time arrangement on this cruise, so I am hoping to eat dinner a bit earlier than I have on previous cruises.

I had friends that told me they LOST weight on the cruise because their suite was so far from the dining areas they walked it all off :-) I was sitting here thinking this morning I need to get a passport in order if I ever work up the nerve for a cruise. I wonder if I can take Mushy with me as she will have her companion papers?

Not sure about Mushy, but as long as you are leaving the US and returning to the same port, you don't have to have a passport. Only a birth certificate and driver's license is required. I'm kind of worried about all of our critters too while we are gone. Fortunately I have a neighbor who will keep an eye on our horses and dogs. But, it doesn't really relieve me from worrying about them while I am gone. It would be wonderful to drop some weight on the cruise, but I just don't see that happening.

My friends took an Alaskan cruise out of California and they needed a passport.

Not sure about Alaska. We have only been to the Caribbean, including Bahamas, Belize, Mexico, Grand Cayman and Honduras. We've left out of New Orleans and Florida. Alaskan cruises might be a little different since some of them cross over to Canada.

Have lots of fun and don't stress too much about gaining weight. Depending on your ports, you will probably do enough walking around to get in more exercise than normal. We're leaving on a cruise too in a few days. Planning on portion control - seemed to have worked last time.

I just got back from a cruise Saturday lost weight. Just eat in the main dinning room stay away from the buffet as much as possible food quality is much better in the main dinning room and is portioned controlled.

WTG, 2MC! That is so great that you've already made your goal. I so agree, getting old is for the birds. That pain in your joints sure does sound a bit like bursitis... ugh! Maybe try Alleve. BTW, happy birthday to you and your husband. Hah. Keep smiling and stick with it. If I don't talk to you again before the cruise, I hope you guys have a blast. :)

2MC I'm glad you had fun on the cruise and lost wt. That's not an easy thing to do. I have never been a runner, but I do walk my 3 miles at least 3 times/wk. More if my wt goes up. I find that keeps me on the right track. Maybe you can switch between running and walking a fast clip...just a suggestion to keep you active. (Less pressure to the joints) Getting old is for the birds and it makes me angry that my head says I can do the same as always and my body screams NO! Sounds as if you are doing great, so keep up the good effort.

Maybe you should try a glucosamine chondroitin supplement. They promote joint health and help alot with cartilage. I have damage in my right knee and take it daily, along with the weight ive lost my knee almost never bothers me anymore. I have just started a couch 2 5k program, so far so good. :-)
