Fritzy 22's Journal, 04 Dec 19

Just got home from my doctor appointment. I wonder why I always feel the need to go get tacos or something bad to eat after the appointment. Just wondering. Really wanted to know the results of my lab tests, specifically the one for inflammation or CRP. Last time it was 14 which is really, really high. It should be under 3. Whenever I read about that test it scares me. It supposed to be for inflammation, but doesn't seem to be the kind associated with pain and a high result could mean a high risk for cardio vascular problems. So I tried hard to follow my doctor's instructions to get that number down. It went from 14 to 10. Still not good, but not as bad as before. The way to get it down to normal is to lose weight (which I am doing, very slowly), exercise, and follow the diet. I am not walking as much as I was a couple of years ago. I have excuses now because it is raining a lot. The other blood tests were normal - liver, kidney, glucose level. My blood pressure was 103/70. I talked to my doctor about the fatigue I sometimes experience and told him I started taking Vitamin D and B-12 and I haven't felt the fatigue since. He said it was fine to take those vitamins and maybe also Vitamin C. We talked again about protein. He said I don't need to worry so much about getting enough protein. I should be able to get enough from the plants I eat and nuts, etc. I told him I aim for 40-60 grams a day and he said 30-40 is also fine. He asked what I thought would happen if I didn't get 40 grams a day. I told him I thought protein was good for muscles and that I have weak leg muscles. He said unless I am a body builder or am chopping down trees every day that I am probably fine. My other doctor (women's health) said pretty much the same thing. But both of them are vegan!

Sorry to ramble on and on but I am concerned about my health and getting that one lab result into the normal range. But it appears there is no pill to do it, it is up to me. Everything else is fine, so I need to continue to lose weight, exercise more (daily if possible) and FOLLOW THE DIET which is to eliminate processed food. I have reduced processed food, but so far can't eliminate it totally. But I am trying. And for the most part I have eliminated processed meat, I haven't had pizza in nearly a year.

Blah, blah, blah, blah. That's probably what my journal reads like to most people. Unless you have the same issues it's sometimes hard to relate.

Remission is great🙌 My CRPs are always high and Sed Rate. My X-rays were good, my ultrasound showed inflammation and erososive damage, different disease. I wouldn’t worry Fritzy. You have a noted condition, could be the offender. You can see a cardiologist specialist. Get labs done for your other worry. Cancer can raise the CRP. Get everything checked and if cardiac and Oncology labs cleared, could be Graves doing it’s thing. Always be diligent friend when it comes to health.💜💚

I can only relate to the wanting to eat tacos afterwards, but I still enjoy reading your stuff! 😉❤️ Hope you continue to improve!

DP - did you read the part where my doctor said unless I am body building or cutting down trees that I didn't need to worry so much about getting more protein? I thought of you at the gym all the time when he said that. And I did make tacos at home with the tiny mission street taco tortilla. Charlie - Thanks! Jcmama- my doctor doesn't seem worried about my heart. And cancer? What would I even ask about? My doctor has blood work done all the time and I have annual mammograms and have had other tests done you get at certain ages.

Yes fritzy...I read that. I guess I kinda consider myself a bodybuilder then. Lol. It's important for muscles. I get 100-150 a day and I'm sure that's plenty. It'll have to be. I have no interest in getting more than that. 😉💪🏼

Fritzy, your doctor is correct about the protein for non body builders. There is one woman on this site with some serious muscle who has never taken extra protein. My life experience has taught me that you don't need to take extra to build muscles.

Fritzy, congrats on lowering your CRP levels. It seems that you a doing what's necessary to continue to improve. Your progress is proof you are on the right track. Get moving forward!!!

Fritzy, please don't dismiss your Dr.'s ideas just because they're vegan. My sister's been vegan for several years and trust me she's been battling the same battle as we are. If you get a chance to check out "The Game Changers" on Netflix it may help you. I certainly found it inspiring, and although I've not jumped on the "vegan" band wagon, I highly recommend this film just for the insight it provides to all of us trying get healthy.

Thanks DP, Ireland and John. Jeassieselby - don't know what you mean by dismissing my Doctor's ideas. I try hard to do what he says. He's not pushing me to become vegan but his opinions about meat and dairy are pretty clear. I don't have or use Netflix. I don't think I will ever be vegan (although never say never!) but may become vegetarian at some point, allowing dairy and eggs.

Ireland - I'm not concerned about getting EXTRA protein, I just worry I don't get enough. Sometimes it's a struggle to get to 40 grams a day.

Your post caught my eye because just this week in an attempt to get closer to the WOE my doc wants (Dash Diet), I replaced my usual one egg and sausage with a Tofu Scramble (3 oz) and two Morning Star veggie links. From a taste perspective it was surprisingly good. I also felt full until lunchtime. But interestingly enough, when I logged the vegetarian breakfast the numbers were VERY surprising compared to the non-vegetarian. Protein: veggie=19.25 / nonVeggie=12 Calories: veggie=170 / nonVeggie=254 Cholesterol: veggie=0 / nonVeggie=242 Fat: veggie=7.75 / nonVeggie=20 Carbs: veggie=5.75 / nonVeggie=1.38 There is an excellent show on Netflix right now called "The Game Changers", and it tracks some very high performance athletes that are vegetarian/vegan. They talk A LOT about protein, and the performance increases for these athletes when deriving it from plant based sources. Plus in the middle somewhere, there is an adorable study of 3 young (male) college athletes who ate vegetarian for a study and had their "manliness" measured over the duration of the testing. It was pretty cute LOL. As part of this whole changing my way of eating to something closer to the Dash Diet, I am starting EASY by getting rid of the eggs/sausage on most mornings and replacing it with something similar, but veggie. Once I get into a habit of that, I will start thinking about how to change my lunches.

Good point Jazzy! I was wondering Fritzy if you have ever tried Ripple non dairy, unsweetened. It has a good amount of protein, is a little sweet and it is a milk replacement. It has 0 sugar although it does taste sweet. There are 17 grams of proteins in edamame.

Jazzy-I have to admit I've never had tofu and have never wanted to try it. Or veggie burgers, etc. I may start trying some different things. I know in order to get sufficient protein from non meat sources, eating beans is a good way. I was one of those kids that was a picky eater, wouldn't try lots of things because of the way it looked, etc. I'm still that way but I've learned to like brussels sprouts and broccoli which would make me gag as a kid. I try not to eat processed meats. That's the first thing from my doctor's list of what NOT to eat that I worked hard on. I do eat bacon, and other processed meats when I go out to breakfast, but rarely at home. Ireland - I've never heard of Ripple. I did buy and try edamame and it was fine, but I only had it once and then forgot I had it and ended up throwing the rest away. I intend to do the Daniel fast that Keyten mentioned in one of her posts. It seems to be a very strict vegan diet that lasts for 3 weeks. I'll do it in January. I want to see how much protein I actually get eating the plants that I currently enjoy including fruits, nuts, vegetables.
