Just as I thought, sugar itself is not addictive. Animal studies do not always apply to humans. High-fat savory(30%) was actually most addictive followed by high-fat sweet(25%). Mainly sugar-containing foods only accounted for 5%. As I always say, no one has issues with gummy bears like they do with chocolates, donuts, chips, ice cream, etc,. It's foods that contain more fat or equal amount of fat and carbs that can be the problem.

"Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS:
There is an increasing societal concern that consumption of specific foods such as sugar might become 'addictive' and, hence, promote weight gain. Claims about the addictiveness of sugar however are based largely on findings from few animal studies, whereas there is a lack of direct human evidence for symptoms of sugar-related substance dependence. The current study examined in a large sample of human participants whether foods mainly containing sugar in particular might cause 'addiction-like' problems that meet clinical DSM criteria for substance dependence, and, also whether in turn this relates to body weight and negative affectivity (depressed mood).

METHODS:
In a cross-sectional study, n = 1495 university students from a variety of faculties were assessed for DSM-related signs of food addiction for particular food categories (YFAS), and, also BMI and negative affectivity.

RESULTS:
Results revealed that from the total sample, 95% experienced at least one symptom of food dependence and 12.6% met the YFAS classification for 'food addiction' as related to DSM-IV criteria. The majority of respondents experienced these problems for combined high-fat savoury (30%) and high-fat sweet (25%) foods, whereas only a minority experienced such problems for low-fat/savoury (2%) and mainly sugar-containing foods (5%). Overweight correlated only with addictive-like problems for high-fat savoury and high-fat sweet foods (P < 0.0001), while this was not found for foods mainly containing sugar.

CONCLUSION:
The current findings indicate that sugary foods contribute minimally to 'food dependence' and increased risk of weight gain. Instead, they are consistent with the current scientific notion that food energy density, and the unique individual experience of eating, plays an important role in determining the reward value of food and promoting excessive energy intake."

And the nuts provide protein. I am currently on a PayDay kick. 😋

The Get Obese Quick formula is about 45% Fat, 40% Carb and 15% Protein by calories. There is probably a link here with a build-in desire to get fat for winter. People today are survivors of the ice age.

Wait a minute, those are almost my exact macro percentages. Am I obese? DP, have you been lying to me?

Snickers, Paydays, and frijoles, oh my!

Oh yeah, obesity requires a calorie surplus. You had me going there. Phew

You know, Becc@, I grew up with a metal lard, dripping container that sat on the stove. No one was fat when we were kids. Just say'in, fat is flavor!

Good to know!

Erquiaga and Chris, I think it's all about balancing the fat and activity. We don't eat as much fat as we used to, which is fine because ot course we are not as active as we used to be. 🧓👵

I would be interested to know specifics about sodas and sweet teas...they seem to be the thing that "sets me off". I don't necessarily binge on those things but they are the things that make me want "more"...food for thought though...I always love reading these articles. Please continue to post them! I know you sometimes get some flack for it but posting the findings as well as the link to the actual article somehow just makes it feel more "official" lol. When I can read the same article and make my own opinions about what is being said I don't have to rely on someone else to "translate" it for me and that really makes a difference to my mindset. I also liked how they brought up that many of these studies are really with animals which hey, is how most of this stuff starts but it's weird that there aren't a lot of larger, newer studies on this considering how sugar is demonized in our society. Not that I'm not demonizing it too lol...oh boy do I!!!

Balance definitely. I also have my jar of bacon grease. It's required as I live in Missouri. :) at least that is what I have been told. I use it for a few things and definitely adds flavor. I always have high carbs from whole foods, not junk. mmm junk on an occasion and I do eat sugar though in moderation. My body does not like lots of fat so try to keep 30% or less because that is where I feel good. .

So true, Becc@. We also ate foods that were not processed and seasonal. That's our goal now as well. EVOO has replaced lard.

Katie - perhaps studies on high fructose corn syrup or caffeine.

Katie, do you crave soda on its own? I think it is usually something that you have with a fatty meal. So you take a bite of the burger, then a swing of sodaz rinse and repeat. It fits into the largest percentage of the problem at that point from above

"When I can read the same article and make my own opinions about what is being said I don't have to rely on someone else to "translate" it for me and that really makes a difference to my mindset." 💓💓💓 Exactly! Just in this one thread we see multiple interpretations.

Steak n Shake sourdough bacon cheeseburger meal with your favorite shake on the side. Eaten all together. High fat sweet combo that is amazing.

Save it for OMAD lol

Katie - there is a difference between what is "demonized" in a popular sense vs. reality. I have never had a health professional tell me to stay away from sugar.
