DairyKing's Journal, 29 Sep 12

A beautiful Saturday. Weather was perfect for working outdoors. Spent some time assembling the stones for the firepit, and weeding a little in the new playground - something I wouldn't have had to do if I had finished the job in the first place. Oh well, hope to get it done tomorrow after church.

I'm putting up a few pictures here of the firepit. It's rustic, and I meant it to be so. Not quite the same as out in the woods along the shore of a lake, but it will certainly meke good work of some wieners and marshmellows. I figure I'll probably cap the top of the pit with a different kind of stone later, and lay some kind of tile and gravel around the pit for sitting later on.

Had a pork chop, fried cabbage and parsley'd potatoes for supper. Very good. A whole bunch of cabbage fried up in about a teaspoon of oil - I don't think it made that many calories, but it was really good.

Even thought I'd throw in a pic of the jerkey, on the keyboard to give you an idea of what 4 good size chicken breasts shrink down to. Still, $4 work of chicken breasts still make more than $11 worth of the Waggin Train jerkey made in China, and I don't have to worry about poisoning my dog. He loves them.

Thanks, I tried to show that the builder who had poured the slab for the merry-go-round put his John Henry in the concrete - Ed Lamm 1936. For those that didn't know the background of this, I uncovered the slab for the merry-go-round with the intent of lifting it out of the ground, but after seeing how big it was, and how deep (about 4 ft.) it went, I figured it would make a perfect base for a firepit. I just didn't want to get a jack hammer and remove the slab.

AHH - that is interesting. This used to be a schoolhouse, right? So there was a merry-og-round on the property at one time? Neat.

Wow... checking out the chicken jerky! Fantastic. I know nothing about the food dehydrators. What brand do you suggest? I love this! Your firepit looks awesome! With the cooler evenings you should be ready to roast some weiners and marshmallows soon! Thanks for the pics!

Sandy, I wouldn't know much about recommending any particular brand. Mine is American Harvest, and I've had it for so many years, the new models don't even look like it. I know there's an Open Country Pet Snack Maker (dehydrator) on Amazon for about $29. Open Country Dehydrators are what they sell at Bass Pro Shops. Those sports guys take their jerky stuff pretty seriously. Their regular dehydrator goes for over $119.00. I think I would try the American Harvester FD-60 Snackmaster for about $69 on Amazon.com if I had to replace this one. You want one that does 145 degrees for chicken jerky.

Yep, HCB; it is a school that was built in 1910, and went up through the 8th grade. It closed in 1998. I actually substituted there for two weeks, after I got out of the service, while one of the teachers was in the hospital. The firepit is almost halfway between the schoolhouse and the gymnasium.

Looks great.... Fire pits seem to be something you do over in the US ... In the UK I don't really hear of anyone building - let alone cooking on one.... Maybe it's because we don't have enough hot days to enjoy one.... Or because, our gardens tend to be smaller.

You don't let any grass grow under your feet - do you? Your chicken jerky looks picture perfect. I have liver dog treats baking in my oven as I write this. Thanks for the reminder about the China products. Until something changes, it is probably not a good idea for pets or humans to eat anything made in that part of the world.

Wow. You and your projects, DK. You are so amazing. The firepit is great. How are you doing? And how's your DW?

Sorry, Sazy & Sk1nny, it's like a campout in your backyard. I know there are urban places that do not allow open fires in their yards, but fortunately most places outside of the cities proper don't have any restrictions. Nothing like sitting around a crackling fire on a cool night, telling stories, and cooking hot dogs on a stick or roasting marshmellows and drinking hot cider - or something a little more toxic. Hi Heather; DW is doing pretty well, even helped in the yard a bit yesterday, and cooked a very nice roast pork, broccoli and cheese and boiled beets dinner this afternoon. Making it hard to exercise restraint, but successful thus far.
