59Carol's Journal, 22 Jul 23

I feel totally ripped off this week. First of all, I am logging in a gain of 0.6 pounds. I have spent the entire week logging in at a modest loss. Today for reasons I totally don't understand I went up 0.8 pound from yesterday.

Couple this with an overall average calorie intake at the very bottom end of my calorie window. I had one 'high' calorie day, two a bit high and 4 very low calorie days.

Yesterday was an odd eating day. I got up late at 6:30am and as I went through my morning routine of exercise, study, shower, etc. I was running late. Ended up with an unexpected half hour call. Then my daughter called as I got out of the shower while on the phone with her a neighbour came over to repair my lawnmower and one thing and another I ate breakfast at 11:30! I skipped lunch and ate supper at the regular time. I was not particularly hungry. Supper was a bit larger in that I had a salad and a low calorie dessert added to the normal plan. I was still 40 calories below the bottom end of my daily window. Not sure if the off routine could really result in a nearly one pound gain. As far as activity goes I spent two hours outside doing weed eating and mowing. The rest of my day I was in motion with one thing or another. Urrgh!!

This week I was busy at my father in law's sorting, donating things and trying not to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff. My friend came and assisted me for two of the three days. I got in a swim and two chi-gong classes, met with a committee to award a bursary, helped my son with his taxes and a government grant he is applying for, got my last shot for immunization while travelling, and a bunch of yard work done! I continue to work with insurance around having that 45 foot tree fall over at my rental property and the other property has a two new furnaces installed and am waiting for the electrician now. Busy times!!

I'm a daily weigher and the scale goes up and down daily. So many things can make a difference, water, salt, exercise, time of month etc... The trend over time though is going down. I think that's why a lot of people don't weigh as often. Just keep doing what you're doing. Don't get discouraged. You got this!

Wow you have been super busy and productive with a lot going on, physically and emotionally! I too do not understand what is happening with the scale right now considering what (how little) I’m eating and my activity level. Every calculator I use suggests I should be losing a pound a week, not just one pound a month. All I can say is hang in there! Maybe someone will have advice for us. ❤️

Carol, I'm wondering if, with all this physical activity, you might be increasing muscle. How are your clothes fitting? Have you considered measuring yourself? That said, my weight can easily fluctuate 1.5 pounds or more from day-to-day for no apparent reason.

Hi, your doing the same thing as I am. I did see where my muscle is increasing. Like shirfleur 1 has said, start measuring yourself. My clothes feel loose, good sign 😁. Also weight continues up and down the slide.

Weight gain fluctuations always bother me too. There are so many variables that day to day weighing is almost self defeating. Keep going and one day it'll drop fast. Remember to keep hydrating as this helps eliminate waste and salts. ;)

I just glanced at last 3 days of your food intake and your sodium is on the high end and your protein is on the low end so that may be it.

I bet your next weigh in shows a loss!

Thank you all for your support! I know we are all in this together. Yearofhealth- you are correct I do eat a lot of salt. This is a constant that I should likely address. Is there such a thing as a salt addict? If there is, I am one! I know that my protein is low yet I eat protein two meals a day. Occasionally I add in a protein bar.

Daily weigh ins are used by me to make sure I am moving along- like check ins but not to be angsting over. I take the Saturday morning weight as the 'real' one so that I am not doing the whole rollercoaster of the daily weigh in. It is just frustrating when the 'real' one is the highest weight of the week!! When I don't do daily weigh ins I find that I become less accountable on a day to day basis and when that happens I really lose it on the scale.

I am not sure to what degree I am increasing muscle. Generally I don't 'count' physical exercise in my weight loss plan. I see it as separate. I am physically active for other purposes than weight control. If it helps out on the weight front - bonus! I have found throughout the years that it is way too easy to fall into the trap of thinking I can eat significantly more because of my physical activity. Instead I find that if I track my eating the weight goes down.
