A few weeks ago, I was TOTALLY stumped and a bit discouraged with my weight gain and inability to lose weight. Since that time, I've researched several websites about eating raw foods and now I see where I've made mistakes. I was always told if you consume all natural and whole foods (uncooked, heated, processed or altered), you can eat all you want. Well, I am a living witness that this information is NOT true. What I did NOT learn in my raw food class is the ability to gain weight due to eating an excess of nuts and fruits (tree nuts, seeds and fruits with natural fats like avocados). I was eating nearly 1-2 avocados a day as well as nuts. So, I reduced my tree nuts/seeds intake to 1 oz per serving only 2 days a week and 1/4 avocado when I consume it. This has GREATLY affected my weight loss and is helping me achieve my goal. I'm also meditating and walking more which is keeping me balanced so I won't focus on the emotional side of eating. On the days I am not exercising vigorously, I decrease my natural fat/oils intake and increase the fruits/veggies which has a higher water content and I eat more fresh greens.

I love your entry - sounds healthy and focused. Avocado is great but can bump the fat up so quickly. I eat a lot of cooked proteins - but the raw diet does sound interesting.

Great observations. I have been trying to cut back on nuts, and have mostly been better. But, some days, yesterday....I turn to them when I am eating out of stress. Not great, but better than some alternatives!

Kaiser Permanente has a really helpful online .pdf brochure for determining the appropriate number of servings for a whole-food, plant-based diet, based on your health goals/weight loss needs. Go check it out.

Yes, healthy still has calories. I love my avocado but I measure out my portions. Great job!
