TREES:

George my 96 year old neighbor, friend whom I had the priveledge to know for over 20 years died March 1st and was memorialized and appreciated as we thanked God for his life on the 6th of March 2011. George's family, friends, and church family were gathered during his church services yesterday morning. We were all sad for the void there will be without him physically in our lives.

I will never look at a palm tree again without thinking of my friend. George was firmly rooted, very tall and lean to the point that one would call him frail but he indeed was very strong. He was married to his lovely bride for over 60 years, raised 4 boys and one daughter and lived his life as to sway gracefully through the winds of change, always reaching and looking up towards the heavens to get his strength which was great love. I admired his Southern Gentleman quiet manner, respect for others, hardworking ethics, and good neighbor spirit. George was always willing to lend a hand or give his hand in friendship. I will miss seeing George walk around our neighborhood as he demonstrated true stength and love of life. The following poem was his favorite. I like it too:)

TREES
by: Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I'm sorry to hear your friend and neighbor passed on. My neighbor Jim died about 4 1/2 years ago at age 94 and had eight children - a lot - outlived three of them - his wife died at 55, anyway he had lots of stories to tell, his dad was best friends with a dad of a very famous female movie star from Waterbury, CT. He told me of the old movie actors, most of them I did not know - so realize in fifty years most of our so-called celebrities will likely pass into obscurity. Thanks for sharing the poem. Have a good day, Lisa...

Jim was 96 too now that I think of it - was born in 1910 - told me of hearing the sirens that signaled the end of WW 1 one night as a boy, I believe he had nine children - one was a priest in Hawaii, I knew his daughter who lived nearby and she was an ex-nun. His wife had been religious. He lived in NYC in the 1940s so saw many celebrities - he said Ingrid Bergman was the most famous woman in the world then and he saw her in his neighborhood many times. He was sharp as a tack with many stories to tell; his wife's father lost a fortune from the stock market collapse, though later did better than most as this man was a pharmacist, lots of stories - I can imagine George told you a lot too...

So sorry you lost one of your dearest friend. I know your so thankful to have known a person such as he was. I bet he was wise. Did you get to have long talks with him? I used to love to hear my aunt tell me all about what it was like for her to grow up and all she did and all about my dad. We had some very nice conversations..Something I will never forget.. Have a good evening Lisa......Bren

George sounds like a cool guy, and I'm sorry for your loss, Lisa. I'm amazed when people make it to that advanced age with a good attitude and most of their marbles intact. I know a couple of folks like that and I hope I'll be so lucky.

It's very sad to lose someone that you really like and respect no matter that he was not a relative. People get into our hearts and it is indeed a sad moment when we know we won't "see" them anymore. I'm so sorry that you lost that someone. Lisa, thank you for puting my issue in perspective. I hated to sound like an uncaring parent. She will be 24 years old in 1 more week and I really think I have done WAY over and above what is due. She HAS to grow up, accept responsibility for her self AND her actions (having 2 children with no husband) and realize mommy won't be around forever to fall back on. She never tries to figure out HOW to get out of her holes, just calls me and says Mom, help me. And, as her mother, of course I do. But now, I am tired of it and I am NOT helping HER by not allowing her to "figure it our herself". Thank you for caring enough to post me your feelings. Thank you.
