** GOOD FOOD, BAD FOOD **

https://spoonuniversity.com/lifestyle/10-worst-cereals-according-to-nutritional-value

I see articles like this all the time. It doesn't bother me at all because of my approach towards food. These write-ups are geared towards folks who look at foods as "good" or "bad".

A more balanced view of eating is to view foods as "nutritional" or "fun".

Sure, there are foods that are truly bad and can cause damage, but let's talk about why diets tend to fail or, at a minimum, SUCK for a sec...

Diets or WOEs may not be sustainable if:

1. the foods available within the set guidelines aren't enjoyable to the individual... "I hate salads, but my wife is making me do this diet."

2. eating the same thing or limited variety becomes very monotonous... "Chicken and rice. Chicken and rice. All I eat is chicken and rice."

3. the temporary way of eating is a chore or something that needs to be done in order to reach a goal... "I just need to eat 600 calories a day for a month before this freaking wedding."

4. the diet restricts you from eating foods you love... "I would kill for a brownie right now, but if I just munch some popcorn and water, the craving will go away." 😭

There are many, many more, yes.

The good news is, you can lose weight eating ANY food IN MODERATION!

"But, Chris, I don't have willpower; if I have one bite, I'll devour the whole cake!"

So, the way of dealing with temptation is to eliminate the temptation? It's a rubber band being stretched. This is how binges become destructive. You feel so proud of your ability to resist "that evil aisle" at the grocery store for so long and then one day... 😳

Instead, change your perspective on food. No longer is ice cream the devil in your freezer, calling to you in the middle of the night. Now, have a small portion (<50g = a small scoop) with dinner. When you feel like getting more, DON'T! Instead of it being off-limits, you're going to eat a little ice cream every night! You won't need to build willpower, just patience to wait 24 hours (instead of months). That way, it's not a "forbidden fruit" that tempts you - it's now just "dessert" and can be enjoyed without guilt!

Back to the article:

As far as foods that are "bad for you"... I eat a ton of "crap", personally lol. You've all seen it.

However, I don't eat the junk food for its nutritional value. To me, my chicken, veggies, oatmeal, eggs, etc. are the nutritionally dense staples in my diet. The Fruity Pebbles and Oreos just keep me from going insane while restricting my calories.

Sound like something you could handle if you're struggling?

You're absolutely correct about that, I use to be one of those persons until I became a believer in Christ.

I remember the first time I went on a serious diet because of GERD, I cried as I ate bland chicken breast with white rice for the third day in a row... Now I'm not supposed to eat red meat and many other wonderful things due to my cholesterol and triglycerides being off the charts and being pre diabetic. I started off really sad because these foods became off limits in my eyes even though I love eating everything.. but you're right that I don't go insane by allowing myself one bite here and there (and my son gets to learn to share!) 😃 Now the diet feels normal. Sure I can't eat everything always, but changing the mindset from "off limits" to "a little here and there" has turned it more into a treat that I'm willing to wait for

I agree about moderation. For me the game is “Threes”. One bite is Yum, this is good. Two bites is better. Third bite is Yeah, that’s enough for now. Could be three almonds, three dark chocolate chips, etc. Let’s me enjoy the foods I love but limiting so as not to create a full binge.

I used to be one of those people who said I just couldn't eat a bit of something and that if I allowed *any* sugar (had a weird fixation on it, probably as a result of the craze/obsession in popular health shows in the last two decades) I couldn't have ONE KitKat but had to have two or three, or a KitKat AND an ice-cream cone AND a burger. Now I know that it doesn't have to be that way and that a lot of what we tell ourselves about addiction or being powerless is influenced by the mainstream narrative. Some people are able to just not eat any "bad" foods for years but it's rare, and I don't see any evidence to show that such a level of restriction is necessary for health, so why put myself through that? More often, I see people restrict for months, maybe a year, and then eat a piece of candy, get very upset about it, and fall off the wagon completely. To each his own, but I think many people in developed countries are extremely scared of food, neurotic about it, and don't know how to interpret studies demonstrating the potential harms or benefits of different foods. It's another thing if you just don't desire certain foods. I'm not tempted by super sweet candy and it's not because I'm scared that I don't eat it. I just don't want it.

And I eat chicken, broccoli and rice because I LOVE IT.

Good advice. It won’t apply for everyone, but it’s a better place to start than the “don’t eat anything” mentality. When the ice cream is in the house, for many, the call to the freezer in the middle of the day, night, or afternoon is paralyzing. Another approach that may work is to find the alternative that satisfies in some way, shape or form. If we’re truly mindful of how satisfying the food is, we’d stop after a quarter cup of ice cream. But that’s not our conditioning. We just keep eating, maybe go back for seconds and thirds until the ice cream is gone 🤪

You NAILED it here Chris! I eat most everything and specific cravings are not really an issue for me just food and drink in general. Quantity is my issue. I’ve come to the point where I try to keep a mental estimation of my Macros in my head and towards the end of each day then often check where those are to decide how I might finish out the day. Have a great weekend Chris!

I agree, but I prefer different things. like good ice cream. don't like cake or cookies that much, thankfully. Now pasta... especially the good stuff, different story. And I do eat it about once a week.

^ No Nutella for me, mermee. Unless someone else has portioned it out for me and I don't have access to the full jar, I go full "I'm addicted, I can't help it" mode around that stuff.

Excellent view! My nutritionist gets annoyed if I call foods "bad" She basically says pretty much what you did. I still try to eat on the healthier side but having a treat mixed in is not a problem.

SAME, Mermee! But I'm no longer at this disgusting stage where I would eat a jar in a sitting. Ugh.

Great post! I’ve learnt to concentrate on flavours instead of large portions- If I want something I have it, but as a treat, not routine

Today I went to a store that has a good donut spot next door… I couldn’t resist. I ate the whole cinnamon donut. It was pretty good, but a little doughy in the middle… maybe I wouldn’t be as tempted next time 😂 I think they might have changed hands. My other problem is my husband! He needs to gain weight, so he eats a lot of yummy “fun” things. One thing he’ll do for me, is give me a spoonful of ice cream when he gets some for himself 😊 The same food all the time is boring. Today I bought some Indian & Asian items to spice things up ⬆️. My plan is to make spicy eggplant (Chinese) & sambar soup (Indian).

I use to be able to do this back in the day. I don’t know if I had more self control back then but now it’s crazy difficult to do just one.

I've lost 30 pounds so far on FS. I have not placed one single restriction on any kind of food that I can eat. rigorously tracking my calories, even the super junky food that I eat sometimes, tells me when to stop eating. I like to eat 3 or 4 times a day so making sure I don't consume to many calories at once works for me. Granted there have been some binge weekends, some off days and at least one week where I went off the rails. But picking my self up and rising strong gas worked for me. I still eat ice cream and chocolate whenever I feel like it. just not as much in one sitting as I used to.

Thanks for sharing! I think we all have to understand our own food relationships. I have learned to not classify some foods as “treats”, or as good and bad. I think about what makes my body happy! I know ahead of time that if I eat concentrated processed foods, - there is no stopping!, and that they won’t do my body well. ! I have found so many yummy and satisfying nutritionally dense foods that I have a diminished craving for empty calories. I am happy about that!! That’s my take. All the best on your health journeys! ☀️☀️☀️

Fine fine fine .... each to his or her own. But ...... really? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Not in my reality is this “good food.” Which isn’t to say I didn’t love it most of my life. So ... loving ‘bad food” isn’t a crime for sure ... maybe it’s just a poor choice. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Enjoy good sir. 😎

Great points Chris! I for one used to feel that I couldn't stop at one serving. In fact, at one time I ate an entire bag of oreos because I could not stop from going to the cookie jar and taking 2 at a time until I finally grabbed the jar and devoured all of them! I was so miserable and ashamed of myself. This was when I was skinny and borderline bulimic. I don't know if it was hormonal, or because I was also having issues with anorexia and would swing from one end of the pendulum to the other. Before I began this recent weightloss goal, I was downing an awful lot of sugar every night and never felt satisfied. I really didn't think I could do portion control. But, I'm here to say that I have been successful!!!! Instead of putting strict, unrealistic timeliness on my weightloss or strict reduction in calories, I took a slower approach that I could stick with. I feel that earing more protein took away my sugar cravings and feeling hungry all the time. I still eat sugary snacks, but within my calorie range and within "portion contol". I often follow that up with some Greek yogurt if I feel likeci want more. The yogurt helps by providing the protein after and gets that sugary taste out of my mouth. It really works for me!!! Thank you for sharing!!! I just wanted to reinforce what you've posted, because I've experienced it!!!!
