Kenna Morton's Journal, 08 Apr 18

I had a great couple of days away at a resort in San Diego. My hosts are great, really fun people. Back to my normal world. I did put on a couple of pounds, but it will come off ok. More salt than I am used to eating and foods that I never eat like chips and VELVETA cheese.

Wow, that is beautiful country out there! We're still struggling out of winter up north... With all that salt and salty food, I'm wondering how much of your weight gain is water? Maybe it will come off fast... Welcome back! :)

Yes, it is mostly water, it will take just a couple of days of normal eating for everything to equilibrate. But it is a good reminder just how BAD I feel when I eat those kinds of things. I literally feel brain fog, and mentally sluggish. A number of years ago I had a serious illness where I could not eat sodium, potassium or protein. I figured it out and ate that way for over two years. my doctor still comments that most people would be dead. I survived, healed and am very healthy. I am still disciplined in what I eat. For fun I have researched many of the diets that people here are on. Many are just not healthy, several are down rightdangerous and others are ok but not sustainable for life. That’s why I believe in a LIFESTYLE CHANGE food program. One that you can follow for life. The other thing I see is people who are dieting themselves but are still feeding fast food to their families or making food choices for their families that might only lead to a generational comtinum of being overweight. Just my thoughts.

My hubby and I eat together, but are rarely on the same menu - he likes his commercial rice mixes in a box, sandwich meat, white flour baked goods, and cold cereal (e.g., fruit loops, but he does go half-and half with bran flakes). He's been eating more apples and brown rice, and has decided to cut sweets, so he's slowly changing. Depending on the ages involved, there's sometimes no way to change what your family eats except by setting a good example. Compromise always worked with my kids. I would make up a big batch of whole wheat pizza dough and let each kid make their own pizza... I cheated a bit by putting pureed spinach and carrots into the sauce - they never caught on! :) I figure that any short term diet will probably not cause much harm in the long run - and if something is truly unhealthy a doctor will notice bad changes and hopefully nip it in the bud... But one must accept that everyone has freedom of choice - and diets aren't a one size fits all situation... I'm beginning to ramble... :)
