Tomorrow will mark the one-year anniversary of my new "healthstyle". That has me thinking and evaluating my progress. When I look at pictures of myself from last summer I see a big difference in my appearance - and that IS important to me, but the biggest change has been in my physical stamina and flexibility. Almost every week I am reminded of the limitations I felt last year...just this week my DIL and I were grocery shopping and she offered to let me push the cart. I told her "No, I'm going to go ahead of you and look at a few things." She stopped and looked at me and said, "I can't believe the change in you! Not so long ago you needed to hold on to the cart." I stopped for a moment and reflected, "You're right!...huh...I'm not sure when that changed." Physically, I went from being able to spend about 10 minutes on my exercise bike to now being able to do one hour on my elliptical with 4 high intensity bursts. And I FEEL so much more energy...I want to remember this when I consider going back to my old habits.

Another actual change in me has been in what I LIKE to eat. I'm sure I'd still like all the desserts I've given up and the heavy pasta dishes, but I'm finding I really ENJOY most of the healthier foods I'm eating. Before this last year I could not stand eating most fish. Once in a while fish and chips were okay, but I'd rarely even eat that. I decided to try different fish and keep trying until I found one I could tolerate. After a couple of months I found rainbow trout and found a way to prepare it that I really like...in fact I actually CRAVE trout when I've not had it in a while! That is a monumental change for me!! I've always liked most fruits and vegetables, but this year I changed my relationship to them. I now think of them as the main course and the proteins and carbs as the side dishes. I also think of them as snacks and desserts...the farmer's market, produce aisle, and fresh fish counter are my new best friends.

As I look over my weight loss graph I see my weight loss slowed down to a crawl since Easter. If I am being completely honest I am discouraged by that. GoodMan says he doesn't know anyone with as strong a willpower as mine...and he's right, when I set my mind to something I don't waiver...but that holds true for the opposite side of my healthstyle...I can just as easily decide "to heck with it! I'm done"...and stubbornly refuse to eat healthy and exercise. I wish I knew what it is that turns that good-for-me-switch on in me, and how to stop the bad-for-me-switch from getting on. I'm hoping journaling my thoughts help to reinforce that good-for-me-switch. Remembering how I felt last summer and comparing it to this summer as well as thinking about how much I actually enjoy the healthy foods give me that push I need to keep up my healthstyle.

Isn't it awsome the changes getting healthy do for your life!!! Don't quit, don't go back to your old ways, keep on getting fitter and you will see more good changes in your life. That is what keeps me going. I love the changes for the better, things I couldn't do last year that now I can.
