Fritzy 22's Journal, 14 Nov 22

So excited! Just put some peanuts on the deck rails and even opened a few so the titmouse and nut hatches can have have some. Otherwise the peanuts are for the blue jays and squirrels. I just saw a scrub jay come and get a peanut. I don't think I've ever seen one here before. I'd see them all the time in Tahoe but we get stellar jays here. The scrub jays are beautiful

Our Titmice & Nuthatches grab a peanut & crack them. We haven't been putting them out cause the squirrels were becoming a nuisance. Now that it's getting cold and I won't have plants on the deck I may start again.

Thanks Sherrye - I like the squirrels. I fill up an old dog dish with peanuts that I buy at the feed store. The jays watch me and know exactly when I put them out. The nuthatches and titmouses have to be quick and grab a peanut and fly away.

I love when you write about your animal sanctuary. 💚 Must drive your cats crazy watching all that bird activity from their spots inside by the windows.

Fritzy, I don't mind the squirrels eating the peanuts. We put them on our deck railing. The squirrels had started crawling up the window screens & climbing into the hanging flower baskets.

Our tufted titmice love peanuts. The squirrels didn't care for them.

Thanks Bananas - the cats enjoy watching the birds and the squirrels, especially if there is a bird hopping around just on the other side of the glass door. Sherrye - origianally I just wanted to feed the birds but then seeing the gymnastic moves the squirrels would make just to get a few sunflower chips made me decide it was easier to buy peanuts for them. They spend their entire day looking for food. Wouldn't like them climbing up on window screens but I have found peanuts they've hidden in flower pots. Morticia - I wasn't sure if it's titmouses or titmice, decided on mouses since they aren't mice! I buy a bird food mice called NO WASTE that includes pieces of peanuts. They like when they don't have to work so hard to open a peanut shell. The squirrels actually prefer the sunflower chips and other bird seed but do take all the peanuts. My sister actually buys human grade nuts in the shell for the squirrels. She says they love the pecans! I told her I would love them too. I don't think she has any concept of money. Thanks Navywife - don't know how the scrub jay found it's way to my house. It was taking turns with the stellar jay at grabbing peanuts out of the bowl.
