I love kumquats and it makes the best homemade jelly.

I have Loquats but before they are "fully" ripened the squirrels take them all. I tried putting the plastic mesh bags I got with produce over them but they were able the chew them right through the mesh. They were pretty inventive, hanging from other branches eating them with the bags over the fruit. I just can't get any for me that are ripe.

When loquats are ripe they are delicious but not sold commercially because they don't ship well. They go from green to ripe to rotten easily. I see many trees here in the northern part of Los Angeles. Loquat or Japanese plum is an attractive, dense evergreen member of the rose family and related to the apple, pear and peach. I've even seen trees a mile from here loaded with their sweet orange fruit. Why they don't have squirrels that eat them all like I do puzzles me. Maybe someone is eating the squirrels. I'm so glad I looked it up because I learned you can make tea from the leaves. It also said the life span was 15 to 20 years. We have lived in our home for 50 years and it was here when we moved in.

Thank you everyone for many comments. Kumquat and Loquat are different fruit. I bought Kumquats witch looks like miniature orange. It tastes sweet and somewhat bitter like orange marmalade jam.
If someone is interested in Japanese plum, try to get Japanese plum wine from Japanese or Asian grocery store. You will like it.
I see some Loquat tree trees around here, but I never tried to eat them whole my life. I try to taste if I find them at farmers market someday.
Thank you so much!

One of my friends has a kumquat tree that is so loaded with kumquats that it looks like an orange ball. The local squirrels don’t eat them. I am actually the only one who does. I pick tons of them and disperse them to everyone I know who does like them and the food bank. But I can only make so much jelly and eat just so many by myself.
