Sat down to enjoy lunch with my 7-year old granddaughter. She looks at her plate and says, "I'm gonna save that one for last" (speaking about one of the triangles of her sandwich). I paused and looked at her and asked why...she said, "see how melty and cheesy it is? That is my favorite piece, so I'm going to save it."
That got me thinking about an article I read somewhere years ago written by a person without weight issues (what I would have called a "normal person" in the past but these days obesity is the norm). She said she looks at her meal and determines which bites are her favorite...the juiciest bites of the burger, the middle of the sandwich, the crunchy edge of the brownie. Then makes sure she eats the parts she likes best first. She said she doesn't deny herself any other part of the sandwich or brownie, but just eats the best first. That way if she starts feeling full or loses interest in the item she just stops. She hasn't denied herself anything, but she reduces her intake by first eating that which is her favorite.
I tend to be more like my granddaughter (or perhaps she takes after me). I see something I like and I tell myself I'll save the best for last. How often have I finished the last bite of crust on a sandwich "so I can have dessert"? Or "joined the clean plate club"?...or thought about eating all my dinner because "there are people who don't have enough to eat"?...
...Hey Emma...LEAVE the parts you don't like so much, eat just the cheesy melty center if that's what you like best...if you get hungry later we'll have a snack...maybe the juciest bites of an apple or the crunchiest looking carrots...

that's very true. when I have a bowl of fruit, say pineapple strawberries and grapes.. I always make sure I eat one of each around until im done and always have pineapple last cause I love it... I should just eat the pineapple first cause im always full by then. I think everyone does that. even my husband - I will watch him eat his least fav on the plate to the last that he loves (all his corn, all his asparagus and the meat is last if its the best thing on the plate) ... I think I might try it your way now!

That is sooo true! I think most of us do that. I do the same when I add fruit to my salad, ummmm...and the same with the cherry on top of a mexican sundae:)!(but not lately!)
