gilliansings's Journal, 03 Aug 14

I am very emotional as I write this journal. For weeks I have been thinking about the weekend I was going to babysit my two grandsons and how it marked the countdown to my DD and SIL moving.

Every little cute behavior, hug, kiss, smile...they just broke me up. I want to cry so much. My older grandson will remember me, and I know he'll be able to FaceTime with me. The baby, though, I'm not as secure in our relationship.

Next weekend we will celebrate the boys' 3rd and 1st birthdays a bit early. I have no doubt I will be very emotional that day too.

The boys left about an hour ago. It's amazing that I ate at all these last 30 hours, let alone that I journalled!

All day I've been thinking about how good a BLT would taste, so that is what I am eating right now. Yum. No guilt. First 2-slice sandwich I've had in ages, lol.

So tired right now...not sure how I'm going to make it through the whole work week.

Make sure your oldest has photos of you and your husband and your two younger children that your grandkids can look at and point to and say your names so they will remember you. FaceTime sounds great!

Thanks, Deb. That's a great idea. My DD isn't great about actually printing photos or putting up the ones we give her. She has never even put up one of her own wedding photos!

I agree with deb cuz that is what we do with all my parents grandkids and the ones that were born after my dad died they know what i look like.

You could make a photo book at Walgreens that is bound. Have pictires of your adventures together so far....the kids will love to read it. The baby will facetime with you as well!!

Thanks, guys! I know everything will work out fine, and I'm also aware that lots of other grandparents out there live far from their grandkids. A photobook is a great idea, or at the least, I might get a large magnet done to put on their fridge :-)

I just joined the grandparents who want to lose weight group so I don't have a lot of back history on your DD and SIL's move, but I've been through that with two DS's at different times. Skype is great. I buy two kids books on Amazon and have one sent to the grandkids and one sent to me. Then I read the book to them over Skype. The kids look forward to it. And like kids do with any favorite book, we read it over and over during upcoming Skype visits. The older ones remember me and the younger ones get a chance to "get to know me" before they come for a visit. I know it's not the same as holding them in your arms, but it helps me get through the time between visits. There are other long distance grandparenting tricks I use - just let me know if you need more ideas.

Wow, Hipaagrammy, that is such a GREAT idea! I love reading to both my grandsons, so I'll have to do that. My elder grandson LOVES the "Lama Lama" books I've bought him, so I guess I better buy extras for here at my house.
